A data storage device includes a data storage mechanism within which is stored a computing program. The data storage device also includes a surface used for labeling. The labeling includes machine readable security information. The data program requires machine reading of the security information before at least a portion of the program is run.

Apparatus and method for providing data storage device security

An optical disc includes an optical disc; a thermally conductive material disposed in a pattern of discrete pads on said disc; and a thermochromic material disposed over said pattern of thermally conductive material. A method of making an optical disc includes indenting a pattern onto an insulator; and depositing a thermally conductive material into indents of said pattern.

Labeling with thermally conductive pads

A method of labeling an object includes selectively applying focused energy to thermally conductive pads on the object to create a label on the object. The conductive pads are disposed adjacent to a thermochromic layer.

Marking an optical disc based on information related to the data side thereof is disclosed. Information related to the data side of the optical disc is first determined. A marking based on the data side of the optical disc as has been read is then written with a laser to a label area on either the data side or the label side of the optical disc.
