An electrical machine includes a first set of windings, a second set of windings and a power controller connected to the first set of windings by a first set of feeder cables. The power controller controls the current and/or voltage supplied to the first set of windings at a control frequency and generates a test signal to supply to the first set of windings. The test signal has one or more frequency components having a frequency that is significantly higher than the control frequency. The test signal in the first set of windings generates an electromagnetic field that induces a current or voltage in the second set of windings. The power controller includes a detector connected to the second set of windings by a second set of feeder cables. The detector measures the voltage and/or current response of the induced current or voltage.

Electrical machine

An electric motor drive system for a propulsion device. The system includes a battery stack having an earth terminal and an end terminal and an electric motor electrically connected to be powered by the battery stack. The motor is configured to be connected to drive the propulsion device, The system also includes: a power converter electrically connected between the battery stack and the electric motor; and a switch between the power converter and the battery stack. The switch is arranged to switch between a first state electrically connecting the end terminal of the battery stack to the power converter to provide a maximum battery voltage to the power converter, and a second state electrically connecting a tap point from one or more intermediate nodes, intermediate the earth terminal and the end terminal, of the battery stack, to provide a voltage less than the maximum battery voltage to the power converter.

Electric power arrangement for propulsion

A motor drive system comprises a power converter arranged to supply an input voltage to a motor connected to the power converter by a cable arrangement. The cable arrangement includes first, second, and third conductors, each of said conductors being electrically coupled at one end to the power converter, and to the motor at the other end. A resistive portion is connected to a respective node of each of said first, second, and third conductors. A capacitive portion is connected to the resistive portion in series. A switching portion is connected in parallel to the capacitive portion and is operable in open and closed states. In the closed state, the capacitive portion is bypassed, providing for dissipation of regenerative energy from the motor. In the open state, the capacitive portion is not bypassed, and acts with the resistive portion to provide RC damper functionality to mitigate transmission line effects from the conductors.
