A spine stabilization system includes at least one bone anchor assembly, the bone anchor assembly including a bone engaging member and a receiver member, wherein the receiver member includes a connecting member cavity, and an elongated connecting member inserted into the connecting member cavity and connected to the receiver member, wherein the connecting member comprises locking features configured to secure the connecting member to the receiver member without the use of a fixation screw extending through a top portion of the receiver member.

The present invention provides a Posterior Dynamic Stabilization (PDS) device that allows elongation, which is a critical requirement for a PDS device as it allows pedicles to travel naturally in flexion, extension, and lateral bending of the spine. This interpedicular travel preserves a more natural center of rotation unlike other PDS devices that simply allow bending. In particular, the invention involves a PDS spring rod, wherein the helix is created with composite flow molding (CFM) technology and comprises a polymer matrix reinforced with continuous carbon fibers, wherein the fibers are oriented substantially parallel to the centerline of the helix, thereby creating a high strength spring.

A spine stabilization system having a dynamic screw comprises at least one bone anchor assembly comprising a receiver member and a bone engaging member pivotably connected to the receiver member. A bearing is provided in the receiver member that engages a portion of the bone engaging member. An elongated connecting member is connected to the receiver member. A posterior stabilization device is provided for controlling movement between adjacent vertebrae. In one exemplary embodiment, the stabilization device can include one or more joints that rely on rotational or sliding movement to allow flexion of adjacent vertebrae, and that control extension, lateral bending, axial rotation, and anterior-posterior shear, preferably by providing one or more flexible connectors and/or a flexible central spacer for connecting to the adjacent superior and inferior vertebrae.
