A controller and an output filter for a power converter, and a power converter employing at least one of the same. In one embodiment, the controller includes an error amplifier with first and second input terminals coupled to one of an operating characteristic and a reference voltage of the power converter, and a switch configured to couple the first and second input terminals to one of the operating characteristic and the reference voltage as a function of a power conversion mode of the power converter. In one embodiment, the output filter includes an output filter capacitor with a first terminal coupled to a first output terminal of a power converter, and an output filter inductor coupled between a second terminal of the output filter capacitor and a second output terminal of the power converter.

A sawtooth generator adapted to produce a sawtooth voltage, a method of operating the same, and a power converter employing the sawtooth generator and method. In one embodiment, the sawtooth generator includes a current source, coupled to a clock with a clock frequency, configured to produce a reference current proportional to the clock frequency. The sawtooth generator also includes an active network including a switch and a capacitor coupled to the current source and configured to provide a sawtooth voltage with a waveform slope produced across the capacitor substantially proportional to the reference current.

A power converter for and method of producing a monotonic rise in output voltage at start-up. In one embodiment, the power converter includes a switch and an error amplifier coupled to an output terminal of the power converter. The power converter also includes a comparator with an output terminal coupled to a control terminal of the switch and an input terminal coupled to an output terminal of the error amplifier configured to enable the switch to conduct for a duty cycle. Additionally, the switch is configured to be turned off at a start-up of the power converter until a voltage of the output terminal of the error amplifier provides a duty cycle for the switch corresponding to an output characteristic pre-charge condition.

In one embodiment, the driver includes switching circuitry referenced to a voltage level and configured to provide a drive signal for a switch referenced to another voltage level and subject to a control voltage limit. In a related, but alternative embodiment, the driver is employable with a power converter couplable to a source of electrical power adapted to provide an input voltage thereto. The power converter includes a power train having a switch referenced to the input voltage and subject to a control voltage limit. The driver includes switching circuitry referenced to a voltage level different from the input voltage and configured to provide a drive signal for the switch within the control voltage limit of the switch.

A controller for, related method of controlling a switch of, a power converter and a power converter employing the same. The controller is employable with a power converter including a switch of a power train configured to conduct for a duty cycle and provide a regulated output characteristic at an output thereof. In one embodiment, the controller includes a sparse analog-to-digital converter configured to determine a difference between the output characteristic and a desired characteristic and provide an error signal representing the difference in discrete steps. A magnitude of the discrete steps is small when the difference is small and the magnitude of the discrete steps is larger when the difference is larger. The controller also includes a duty cycle processor configured to provide a digital duty cycle signal to control the duty cycle of the switch as a function of the error signal.

The controller is employable with a power train of a power converter including a switch configured to conduct for a duty cycle and provide a regulated output characteristic at an output thereof. In one embodiment, the controller includes an oscillator configured to provide a clock signal having multiple phases. The controller also includes a modulator configured to select a phase of the clock signal as a function of a portion of a digital duty cycle signal to refine a resolution of the duty cycle and provide a signal to control the duty cycle of the switch as a function of the digital duty cycle signal.

A receiver for decoding passband signal pulses transmitted in accordance with a M-ARY phase shift keying modulation scheme, comprises a multiphase sampler for sampling received passband signal pulses in the passband frequency range so as to generate a plurality of digital words corresponding to the sampled passband signal pulses, such that each digital word represents the phase of each sampled passband signal pulse. A phase reference register or other storage device is coupled to the multiphase sampler for storing one of the digital words as a phase reference such that other digital words generated by the multiphase sampler are compared with the digital word corresponding to the phase reference for decoding the passband signal pulses.
