A method of provisioning multicast services is provided. In an example, the method includes forming a plurality of multicast groups, each of the plurality of multicast groups associated with one of a plurality of first channel quality ranges. A request for a multicast service and an indicator (e.g., a channel quality indicator (CQI)) indicating a channel quality of a mobile unit are received from the mobile unit. The mobile unit is assigned to one of the plurality of multicast groups based on the indicated channel quality and the plurality of first channel quality ranges.

The present invention provides a method of wireless communication involving at least one mobile unit and at least one base station configured to transmit data over first and second data channels and corresponding first and second control channels. In a UMTS wireless communication system a UE autonomously determines that it is going to transit from an active traffic mode into an idle traffic mode and informs the NodeBs in its active set that it is doing so. Method of increasing the capacity of enhanced data channel on uplink in a wireless communications system

The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for managing mobility of a wireless communication device across a first and a second access node in a common administrational area of a network. The method comprises using the first access node to assign a temporary identification to the wireless communication device, causing the second access node to identify the first access node from which the temporary identification originates and hiding the mobility of the wireless communication device from the network when routing traffic to a serving access node of the first and second access nodes based on the identified first access node and the temporary identification. In one embodiment, use of software at these access nodes may enable deploying of a centralized logical functionality instead of centralized physical nodes. This software may provide mobility management of one or more wireless communication devices across a group of radio access nodes including base stations or Node Bs in a multi-vendor environment and a non-supplier specific. Through such decentralization, for example, network vendors may provide mobility management with insignificant impact on existing standards and interchangeability of network elements of a network, such as an Internet protocol (IP) network.

Managing mobility of wireless devices in distributed communication networks

The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for managing relocation of one or more scrambling codes in a spread spectrum wireless communications system. The method comprises detecting an indication for a serving radio network subsystem relocation that causes a user equipment to leave a first radio network controller and selectively transiting, through an intermediate transition, at least one scrambling code of the one or more scrambling codes associated with an uplink from the first radio network controller to a second radio network controller for the user equipment in response to the indication. The first radio network controller may maintain three pools of scrambling codes, namely, a first pool of one or more relocated scrambling codes (SCs), a second pool of one or more free scrambling codes and a third pool for each of one or more used scrambling codes. By avoiding an early reuse, an uplink scrambling code may be assigned to a particular UE because a target radio network controller, i.e., a new serving radio network controller may use the same scrambling code as long relocated user equipment maintains a current call. In this way, an uplink scrambling code defined for a serving radio network subsystem relocation procedure based on 3GPP standards may be consistent across disparate vendor solutions.

Managing scrambling codes during serving radio network subsystem relocation

The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for controlling a communications system that includes a mobile wireless device, a first and a second base station and a radio network controller. The communications system may allocate frequency bands to users on a multiplicity of channels associated with a multi-layer access network across at least two cells communicatively coupled to a first and a second base station, respectively. The method comprises monitoring a radio emission parameter associated with the first and second base stations that communicate with the mobile wireless device. A radio emission parameter associated with the first and second base stations, such as signal strength or quality, is monitored, to select a target cell among a set of candidate cells for the mobile wireless device and to transfer the mobile wireless device from a first frequency band to a second frequency band. For example, radio resource management algorithms may cause emission-controlled cell selection and inter-frequency handover from a first frequency band to a second frequency band with a transmit power level lower than that of the first frequency band. In accordance with one aspect of the instant application, electromagnetic exposure to a user of the mobile wireless device is substantially decreased, resulting in lower energy costs and reduced environmental impacts.
