Methods for making an osteoimplant are provided. In one embodiment the method includes applying a mechanical force to an aqueous slurry of insoluble collagen fibers to entangle the insoluble collagen fibers so as to form a semi-solid mass of entangled insoluble collagen fibers; and lyophilizing the semi-solid mass of entangled collagen fibers to form the osteoimplant. An osteoimplant containing entangled insoluble collagen fibers is also provided.

Described are implantable, malleable medical materials comprising mineral particles, insoluble collagen fibers, and a gel-forming polysaccharide component and/or another added gel-former. The malleable medical materials can be used treat bone or other tissue defects in patients, including in conjunction with biologically active factors such as osteogenic proteins. Also described are methods and materials that can be used to prepare the malleable medical materials.

The crosslinked material includes hydroxyl groups, carboxyl groups, and amine groups prior to crosslinking. The methods include removing at least a portion of the zero-length ester crosslinks in a crosslinked material and/or blocking at least a portion of the amine groups that are reactive with carboxyl groups and form zero-length crosslinks.

A method for making a medical device having a biomolecule immobilized on a substrate surface is provided. The method includes coating the substrate surface with an amino-functional polysiloxane; and contacting the amino-functional polysiloxane coated surface with a biomolecule under conditions effective to immobilize the biomolecule.
