A method of applying a quality-aware volume reduction to communication networks is provided herein. The method includes the following stages: deriving, from the network: a bandwidth capacity limit of the links of the network, and an initial flow rate for each flow transmitted via nodes through the network; obtaining from each one of the nodes, a gain value which corresponds to a quantitative data demand requested by the node and given in terms of data quality; and calculating, for each one of the nodes, a data reduction ratio, that achieves: (i) a maximal overall revenue associated with the network, wherein the revenue for a node is calculated with respect to the quality of the data that arrives to the node, and (ii) an optimal bandwidth allocation over the links with respect to the gains and the data quality at each node, and to the limited bandwidth capacity of the links.

Applying quality aware volume reduction to communication networks

A method for managing power consumption in a data storage system is provided. The method comprises receiving a first input/output (I/O) request identifying an I/O operation to be performed by a storage device; delaying scheduling of the first I/O request to manage amount of power consumed by servicing the first I/O request; and forwarding the first I/O request to a storage controller associated with the storage device. The storage controller schedules the first I/O request using a scheduling mechanism, and the storage device services the first I/O request according to the scheduling mechanism.

Managing power consumption and performance in a data storage system

A computer implemented method is disclosed for obtaining file-level information from block level information of files stored on a storage medium. The method includes accessing the storage medium to obtain metadata available in block level on the storage medium and building an inverse block-to-file map of the files stored on the storage medium. The method also includes listening online to incoming block-level commands communicated from a host to the storage medium, parsing the incoming block-level commands, inferring file-level information from the parsed block level commands; and updating the inverse file-level map. Also disclosed are corresponding computer program product and processing system.

Obtaining file system view in block-level data storage systems

A method for determining power consumption in a data storage system is provided. The method comprises determining data access patterns for at least a first storage device in a storage system based on operations performed by the first storage device; and calculating power consumption for the storage system by interpolating costs associated with the operations performed by the first storage device, wherein the cost associated with each operation is determined based on: (1) various levels of activities for the first storage device and a mix of workload characteristics, and (2) predetermined power consumption measurements obtained from one or more benchmarks for same operations performed by a second storage device in a test environment.
