An apparatus, for non-destructively testing for flaws in materials, having a housing assembly with a rotor and a stator for passing over the testing material, an ultrasonic probe fixed to the stator, and an eddy current probe mounted on the rotor. In operation the rotor rotates the eddy current probe about the ultrasonic probe and an indexing coil on the ultrasonic probe monitors the relative position of the eddy current probe. The rotating eddy current probe generates eddy currents in the testing material such that internal flaws effect the normal feed back to the probe. Changes in this feed back are monitored to determine, in conjunction with the indexing coil, the existence and location of flaws in the testing material. In the preferred embodiment a rotary transformer electromagnetically bonds the rotating eddy current probe to the housing stator. Reflected signals received back by the ultrasonic probe are also monitored to determine the existence of flaws, more readily detected by ultrasonic testing, below the probe.

A method and apparatus for non-destructive ultrasonic testing of tires is disclosed wherein an ultrasonic transmitter is positioned outside of the tire and applies pulses of ultrasound to the tire at a plurality of locations around the tire's circumference for transmission through the tire wall and receipt by an ultrasonic receiver located within the tire. The ultrasonic receiver generates signals in response to the received ultrasonic transmissions and a computer processes these signals to generate characterizing data from which defects in the tire may be determined. Signals representative of the defects are then processed to generate a graphic display illustrating the location of the defects with the tire.

Ultrasonic tire testing method and apparatus

Pulses of accoustic energy are transmitted at normal incidence to the wall of a welded pipe, and also at an oblique angle thereto, wherein such transmissions, from respective transducers, occur immediately adjacent a girth weld. Reflected pulses are then received and processed to analyze the radial extent of the girth weld at each interface between the pipe and the weld material. By these means, undercuts or cracks in the weld are detected and analyzed as to their depth and profile. The energy transmitted normal to the pipe wall determines the distance between the pipe and the pulse transducers, and a signal is then generated to simulate a reflection from the inner wall of the pipe with relation to an obliquely-directed pulse. The transducers are then moved axially of the pipe and towards the weld, in small increments, in order to cause the oblique transmission of pulses finally to intercept the weld, thereby producing reflected pulse data when cracks or undercuts are encountered. The heads are also moved circumferentially of the pipe in order to determine the circumferential extent of any undercut or crack.
