This invention is directed to a gas curtain assembly which comprises at least one structure of substantially vertical tubes on both sides of and supporting a vertical tube, forming an interconnected frame comprising at least one row of apertures for gas or fluid to pass through and forming a curtain of gas or fluid under the vertical portion of the assembly.

Gas curtain assemby for muffled continuous furnaces

Apparatus and method of induction heating wherein the heating operation is conducted in a low oxygen-containing atmosphere by the introduction of an inert gas alone or in combination with an oxygen-reacting gas through the ends of the induction coil housing or through removable covers enclosing the spaces between spaced apart housings.

Induction heating in low oxygen-containing atmosphere

Soot deposition from protective atmospheres and residual lubricants normally carried on ferrous wire and removed during annealing. During the cooling stage of an annealing cycle, air or other suitable oxygen containing gas is introduced into an annealing furnace containing the wire when the wire temperature is between approximately 1050.degree. and 950.degree. F. At these temperatures, the introduced oxygen is effective to volatilize the residual lubricant and soot formed from decomposition of carbon monoxide. This removal is accomplished without significant decarburization of the wire and only minor oxidation thereof. The oxygen containing gas may be introduced into a bell furnace by raising the inner cover thereof or the oxygen containing gas may be injected into the inner retort of a bell furnace or directly into a batch furnace.

Process for annealing ferrous wire

Rod and wire or other ferrous material is annealed, normalized, spherodized, etc. in a furnace under nitrogen based atmospheres to which is added a mixture of methylacetylene and propadiene. This latter mixture reacts with decarburizing substances such as carbon dioxide in the furnace at relatively low temperatures of about 1000.degree.-1100.degree. F. to substantially preclude decarburization of the ferrous material. The use of a mixture of methylacetylene and propadiene in the amount of approximately 0.1-10% by volume of the furnace atmosphere also results in a relatively high CO level, reduces decarburization and oxidation of the ferrous material.

Processes for heat treating ferrous material

A plurality of cords of heat resistant material are disposed adjacent to one another in a plurality of layers. A heat resistant tape material having an adhesive formed thereon in a pair of beads is wrapped around the center portions of the cord members so as to form a pair of free hanging curtain sections effective to block gas flows in a heat treatment furnace or the like. The adhesive is also heat resistant, and the use of a tape to form this curtain assembly enables the same to be independent of mounting hardware such as clamped mounting plates. The vertical position of the curtain assembly may be adjustable so as to compensate for wear during use.
