The transmission of signaling frames in a QoS system may be prioritized over the transmission of content frames carrying time-sensitive information. The signaling frames and the content frames may belong to a single communication session. Alternatively, the signaling frames may belong to a different communication session than the content frames. The signaling frames and the content frames may be audio frames, video frames or frames of other time-sensitive information.

Wi-Fi quality of service signaling

Aspects relate to determining whether a constraint or other condition on a mobile device may be alleviated or better satisfied by switching from one communication network to another for a call (or setting up a call on one network in preference to another). A mobile device is operable to conduct a communication session over at least two different communication media, which have different power consumption characteristics. Where a remaining battery power level is constrained, a determination can be made whether using one network over another saves more than a threshold amount of power over another network. Estimates of battery life for each network can be made based on predictions of a length of the communication session, and a power factor calculated for the network.

Switching communication radio path based on power constraints

To handle a communication session at a wireless mobile communications device, after receiving an indication of current signal strength of an access point for a wireless local area network ('WLAN') a signal strength threshold associated with the access point is retrieved. If the communication session is currently carried by a cellular network and the current signal strength exceeds the signal strength threshold, the communication session is switched from the cellular network to the WLAN. A metric is then adjusted based on timing of the switch relative to any switch of the communication session from the WLAN to the cellular network over a preceding time window associated with the access point. Based on the metric, the signal strength threshold associated with the access point is selectively adjusted.

System, method and device for handling voice calls on a dual-mode wireless mobile communication device

A computer implemented method for transmitting dual tone multi-frequency (DTMF) tones is disclosed. The method includes sending an indication to a mobile device to start a cyclic ring tone including ring and pause periods. The delay incurred to send a DTMF tone to the mobile device is estimated. The server schedules the transmission of the DTMF tone to be received at the mobile device during a pause period of the cyclic ring tone and the DTMF tone is sent as scheduled.

System and method for the synchronized transmission of tone sequences

Aspects relate to provision of enterprise call capabilities to mobile devices. For example, a mobile device can indicate, over a data channel, that a PBX is to make a call on its behalf to a called party. The PBX can call back the mobile device, call the called party, and bridge those call legs to establish the call. The mobile device can employ mechanisms that a particular incoming call is made by the PBX. These mechanisms can include using ANI information, sending, and receiving audible verification codes over the voice channel established after answering the incoming call. The verification codes can be selected based on different behaviors of the mobile devices and the network or networks used by the device(s).

Verifying and identifying incoming PBX calls on mobile devices

If the communication session is currently carried by a cellular network and the current signal strength exceeds the signal strength threshold, the communication session is switched from the cellular network to the WLAN. A metric is then adjusted based on timing of the switch relative to any switch of the communication session from the WLAN to the cellular network over a preceding time window associated with the access point. Based on the metric, the signal strength threshold associated with the access point is selectively adjusted. If, on the other hand, the communication session is currently carried by the WLAN and the current signal strength is below the signal strength threshold, an attempt is made to switch the communication session from the WLAN to the cellular network and a metric associated with the access point is adjusted based on whether or not the switch failed. Based on this second metric, the signal strength threshold associated with said access point is adjusted.

Apparatus, and an associated method, for forming a communication connection between a mobile station and a communication network. The communication network is of either of two protocol versions, such as a UMA-compliant network and a GAN-compliant network. A network access identifier is formed at the mobile station of a format that permits its acceptance by the communication network. If a first network access identifier is formed of a format that is incompatible with the protocol version of the communication network, a subsequent network access identifier is formed of the format of the other of the protocol versions. A listing is maintained at the mobile station that identifies the determined protocol version of the communication network.

Apparatus, and associated method, for facilitating communication connection between a mobile station and a communication network

Mobile devices use a PBX and application servers associated with the PBX to access voice services. Some mobile devices can support simultaneous data and voice channels, with the PBX and application server respectively. Where a data channel is unavailable, a control and status updating mechanism is needed. One approach is to signal over the voice channel with DTMF tones. DTMF tones should be timed to cause the tones to arrive at the mobile device during a pause period of a ring cycle. However, it also is desirable to avoid unnaturally long silence periods or other pauses during system usage. Aspects relate to enhancing a user experience in these situations and successful transmission/reception of control and status information over a voice channel using DTMF tones.
