A process for making a roofing ply roll or sheet product which comprises pretreating a fiber glass mat with water to provide greater than 2 and less than 10 wt. % water therein, and impregnating said moisturized mat with molten asphalt, the amount of asphalt retained in said mat being directly related to the amount of water present in the pretreated mat. An ASTM D 2178 Type VI roofing ply sheet comprising a fiber glass mat impregnated with asphalt and having a tensile strength of at least 60 lbf/in CMD and a flexibility of about 0.2 or less in inch/lb stiffness modulus MD.

Base sheet for roofing assembly

Roofing assembly having a substrate covered with a base sheet which is perforated with a plurality of uniformly spaced clusters of vertical apertures designed to receive an adhesive to bond the base sheet to the substrate. The roofing assembly possesses improved wind uplift resistance.

Lighter weight, high strength, built-up roofing (BUR) membranes, systems and process for obtaining same are provided herein. These BUR membranes are made by using an improved ply sheet having uniform ventability and attachment in the overall assembly and superior resistance to wind uplift. The improved structure involves a ply sheet carrying 1/8 inch diameter or larger perforations along its longitudinal border in an area comprising between 1/5 and about 1/2 the width of the ply sheet. The ply sheets here employed for the BUR assembly or membrane have a thickness essentially not in excess of the layer of bonding agent applied over each ply in the assembly.
