Method of, and systems for, establishing a connection between a remote user equipment, UE, and a telecommunication network via a relay capable UE

The system () of the invention is configured to receive information relating to relay devices (-) present in a certain spatial area and determine relay configuration information for the relay devices from the information. The relay configuration information instructs the relay devices when to receive and/or relay data units and when not to receive and/or relay data units. The system is further configured to transmit the relay configuration information to the relay devices. The relay device of the invention is configured receive a data unit from a further device () or not in dependence on the received relay configuration information and/or relay a received data unit to the cellular communication network () or not in dependence on the received relay configuration information.

Determining when to relay a data unit in a cellular communication network

A streaming assistance system may be provided which may be connected to at least two network links, for example via respective network interfaces. Both network links may have different characteristics, e.g., in terms of throughput, utilization, latency, etc. The streaming assistance system may assist in the streaming of media content to a client device by identifying a media fragment which is likely to be requested by the client device in the (near) future, selecting a network link to be used for the streaming of the media segment, and effecting a prefetching of the media segment via the selected network link. In some embodiments, the streaming assistance system may be a DASH Aware Network Element (DANE).

Streaming assistance system and computer-implemented method

The system of the invention is configured to receive from a client device () located in the mobile communication network () a request to connect to a home area network (), determine an identifier of a residential gateway () in the home area network or of a fixed-line network () to which the home area network is coupled, and transmit a request for an address and a range of addresses in the home area network to the residential gateway or the fixed-line network corresponding to the determined identifier. The system is further configured to receive the address and the range of addresses from the residential gateway or the fixed-line network, transmit the address to the client device, establish a tunnel with the residential gateway and establish a forwarding rule at a forwarding function () of the mobile communication network.

Connecting to a home area network via a mobile communication network

The service-providing device () of the invention is configured to obtain a code associated with the service-providing device, to wirelessly transmit the code, and to receive data from a service-using device () in response to the wireless transmission. The code does not comprise characteristics of the service-providing device. The service-using device of the invention is configured to receive information about one or more service-providing devices located on a secure local area network () over the secure local area network. The information comprises a code for each of the one or more service-providing devices. The service-using device is further configured to select one or more of the received codes, listen for wireless transmission of the selected one or more codes, and transmit data to a device which wirelessly transmitted at least one of the selected one or more codes.

A system for sending a relay notification comprises a transceiver and a processor. The processor is configured to use the transceiver to receive a request for allowing a mobile device to be used by a further mobile device as a relay to a mobile communication network. The processor is further configured to determine whether the mobile device is to act as a relay for the further mobile device based on the unique identifier of the further mobile device, and to use the transceiver to notify the mobile device that it is to act as a relay for the further mobile device in dependence on the determination. The mobile device is configured to receive the notification from the system. The processor is further configured to start relaying data received from the further mobile device to the mobile communication network upon receiving the notification.

System and methods of sending and receiving a relay notification

System and method for making a vertical handover decision between first and second networks using a terminal configured to attach to both networks and a fixed point in either network. Both networks allow information flow between the terminal and the fixed point. When attached to the first network the terminal detects the second and compares a first bandwidth measurement, representing available bandwidth along a first path between the terminal and the fixed point, to a second bandwidth measurement representing available bandwidth along a second path between the terminal and the fixed point. The terminal maintains attach to the first network if the first bandwidth measurement is higher than the second bandwidth measurement and makes a decision to handover to the second network if the second band&#xac; width measurement is higher than first bandwidth measurement.

Vertical handover

The invention relates to a node for communication between a first network and an second network and coupled to a controller in the second network via a first communication route. The node and controller form a virtualised home gateway platform. The node is arranged to access a second communication route and also to couple to the controller via the second communication route upon connection failure of the first communication route. This reconnects the node to the controller thereby maintaining a route for transmission of data streams and downloads into the home environment but also re-establishes control signalling within the virtualised home gateway platform and therefore also within the home network. A system for performing gateway functions between a first network and an second network, and a method of maintaining connection between a node and a controller, are also described.

A method of restarting a network () consisting of network modules (), the method comprising the steps of: * recording error data associated with errors occurring in the network, the error data including sets of network variables applying when the errors occurred, * upon detection of a start-up error, deriving a new set of network variables from the recorded error data, for example by changing the order of two network variables, and * restarting the network while using the new set of network variables. The network modules () may be wireless modules, while the network variables may comprise communication channel numbers or network addresses. The method may be carried out using a network control device () coupled to a central network unit ().

Restarting networks

A wireless communication network comprises an association unit and a plurality of stations. At least part of the stations store association information indicative of an associated route for transmission of messages from the station to the association unit. The association information is generated by installing the stations in a not-associated state; transmitting association request messages from stations in the not-associated state; and transmitting association grant messages in response to the association request messages. Each association grant message is transmitted only from the association unit or, at least when the station that has transmitted association request message is outside a reception range of the association unit, from one of the stations that is in an associated state. Each station that has received the association grant message in response to its association request message is switched to the associated state. Association information is stored that indicates the station that has sent the association grant message as part of the associated route to the association unit.
