A cylinder head arrangement for a direct injected internal combustion engine and particularly one having multiple valves. The cylinder head configuration is such that the injector can be positioned centrally in the combustion chamber and disposed below the overlying ports, which preferably are the inlet ports without significantly detracting from their flow area or without requiring sharp curvature or bends in their configuration that could restrict air flow.

Cylinder head for direct injected engine

A cylinder head construction for a direct injected internal combustion engine wherein a spark plug well is formed in the cylinder head and penetrates through its combustion chamber surface at the periphery of the combustion chamber. The opening of the nozzle receiving portion of the this well is relieved around the outer peripheral portion thereof so as to avoid the formation of an edge that can deteriorate through cracking.

Direct injected cylinder head

An internal combustion engine cam drive arrangement and coolant manifold. The engine comprises an engine body that is formed with an coolant opening that is circumscribed by a flexible transmitter that drives cam shafts from the engine crankshaft. A coolant manifold communicates with this opening and overlies in part the flexible transmitter. At least a major part of the remaining portion of the flexible transmitter is covered by a timing cover. The timing cover and the coolant manifold each may be removed from the engine body independently of the other.

An improved variable valve timing mechanism for an internal combustion engine wherein the variable valve timing mechanism includes a control valve mounted by a bearing cap for the cam shaft and specifically one end of the cam shaft. The bearing cap is fastened to the cylinder head by threaded fasteners that are disposed on opposite sides of a bearing surfaces a cam shaft in which at least one oil control groove is formed. Oil is supplied to this control groove by a valve element that is mounted in the bearing cap in spaced relation to the threaded fasteners.

Variable valve timing arrangement for engine

A cylinder head and high pressure mechanical fuel pump drive for an overhead cam shaft internal combustion engine. The cylinder head in the area of one of its cam shafts is formed with an extending ledge to which a fuel pump mounting member is affixed. This ledge and the mounting member are formed with a bore that receives a cylindrical portion of the housing of the fuel pump and which portion journals the pump driveshaft. A simple O-ring seal seals the pump mechanism in this area from the cam shaft chamber and facilitates a driving connection between the end of the cam shaft and the pump driveshaft.

Engine pump drive

An improved compact induction system for a V type engine including a pair of plenum chambers disposed in the valley of the V. The plenum chambers are shorter than the respective cylinder banks and serve high speed intake passages of the respective cylinder bank and some longer, low speed intake passages of the adjacent cylinder bank and some low speed intake passages of the other cylinder bank. All of the low speed intake passages have the same length.

Induction system for V type engine

A camshaft drive arrangement for a V type engine having a pair of flexible transmitters that drive intermediate shafts which, in turn, drive respective camshafts associated with the respective cylinder banks. A combined flexible transmitter and guide member is disposed between the flexible transmitters that drive the intermediate shafts for tensioning one of these flexible transmitters and acting as a guide for the other of them.

V type engine

An improved induction system for a V type engine having angularly disposed cylinder banks that is comprised of a pair of plenum chambers that are disposed in side by side relationship between the cylinder banks. Intake passages extend at right angles from each plenum chamber through the other plenum chamber and serve an intake port of the opposed cylinder bank. The plenum chambers are staggered relative to each other so as to provide a void at one end of the engine in which an accessory is positioned. An intake device supplies air to the plenum chambers and it extends beneath them and is connected by fasteners which are accessible through removable covers of each of the plenum chambers.

Intake system for V type engine

Two embodiments of compact high performance induction systems for V type engines that include pairs of plenum chambers that extend over the respective cylinder banks. First pairs of runners extend from an inlet opening in each plenum chamber to an outlet opening that communicates with the cylinder of the opposite bank. Second pairs of intake passages are provided which extend from inlet openings in the respective plenum chambers to outlet openings in the cylinders of the adjacent cylinder head. The first intake passages have portions that extend through the other plenum chambers and the second intake passages communicate with the cylinders through these intermediate portions. The intermediate portions are curved and in one embodiment the second intake passages are tangential to these curved portions and in the other embodiment they are radial to it.
