An intake manifold for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine contains main intake passages leading from a main distribution chamber for supplying lean mixture to each cylinder. The intake manifold also has auxiliary intake passages leading from an auxiliary distribution chamber for supplying a rich mixture to each cylinder. Engine coolant is circulated through the intake manifold to act as heating means for the rich mixture and for part of the lean mixture. Another part of the lean mixture is not heated.

Intake mixture heating device for internal combustion engine

An internal-combustion spark-ignition V-8 piston engine has a main exhaust gas reaction chamber positioned between the two banks of cylinders. Each cylinder has a main combustion chamber and an auxiliary combustion chamber connected by a torch nozzle restriction. Valved intake passages supply lean mixture to the main combustion chambers and rich mixture to the auxiliary combustion chambers. A spark plug is associated with each auxiliary combustion chamber. Valved exhaust passages supply hot exhaust gases to auxiliary exhaust gas reaction chambers, each of which projects through an insulated wall of the main exhaust gas reaction chamber, and discharges into it. Each of the auxiliary reaction chambers is substantially smaller in volume than the main reaction chamber and helps to minimize unwanted pollutants such as unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide in the exhaust gases by maintaining the exhaust gases at relatively high temperature and for relatively long time periods before discharge into the atmosphere, and over a wide range of engine speeds and loads. A separate air pump is not required.

Exhaust gas reaction chambers for internal combustion engine

An internal combustion piston engine has a main combustion chamber supplied with a lean mixture and an auxiliary combustion chamber supplied with a rich mixture. A spark plug ignites a mixture in the auxiliary chamber to project a flame through a torch passage into the main chamber. Walls in the underside of the stationary head of the engine form a flame guide channel diverging from the torch passage toward intake and exhaust valves which are located equidistantly from the torch passage. The torch passage may comprise an elongated slot or a pair of spaced openings.

An exhaust purifying system for a multi-cylinder four-cycle internal combustion engine operating on an intake mixture leaner than stoichiometric employs first preliminary reaction chambers receiving exhaust gases from ports connected to cylinders having successive firing order. The exhaust gases are then delivered from said first preliminary reaction chambers to a single second preliminary reaction chamber and then to a catalytic reaction chamber containing oxidative catalysts of base metals, and then finally to an oxidative reaction chamber. The intake mixture for the engine is heated from exhaust gases in the oxidative reaction chamber. This particular succession of chambers causes the temperature of the exhaust gases to increase to above 800.degree. C.

Exhaust purifying system for internal combustion engines

Timing control mechanism for an internal combustion engine employs a vacuum chamber connected to a solenoid valve operated by a thermal switch responsive to engine temperature. The solenoid valve connects the vacuum chamber to one of two vacuum outlets connected to the engine intake passage. The first of the outlets is positioned adjacent and upstream from the throttle valve and the second of the outlets is positioned downstream from the throttle valve. The passage from the first outlet to the solenoid valve contains orifice means to restrict flow and also contains a check valve in parallel with the orifice means to permit flow toward the solenoid valve. The passage from the second vacuum outlet contains a check valve preventing flow toward the solenoid valve.

Control system for ignition timing of engine

Ignition timing control apparatus for an internal combustion engine driving a vehicle through an automatic transmission includes a vacuum actuator connected to turn a point base about the axis of the rotary cam which operates the breaker points. The vacuum actuator is connected by a conduit to an intake passage in the engine downstream from the throttle valve. An electromagnetic selector valve is placed in the conduit and acts to connect the vacuum actuator either to the engine intake passage or to atmosphere. A temperature responsive member operates an electric switch to control the selector valve. A check valve and a restricted orifice are mounted in parallel in said conduit between the selector valve and the vacuum actuator.

Ignition timing control apparatus for internal combustion engine

Unequal fuel concentrations in air-fuel mixtures delivered by a downdraft carburetor to branched intake pipes leading to engine cylinders has been traced to asymmetrical fuel delivery into the venturi passage in the carburetor. To equalize the fuel concentrations carried in the branched pipes, an inclined wall is provided in the distribution chamber that receives the air-fuel mixture from the carburetor. The inclination of the wall directs a greater quantity of air-fuel mixture into the branched pipe which would otherwise receive a leaner mixture because of the asymmetrical distribution of fuel from the venturi passage.

Intake apparatus for internal combustion engine

An ignition timing control member extends through the center of a first vacuum chamber having a central movable sleeve adapted to be contacted by a flange on the control member to limit movement thereof in a direction to advance the ignition timing. The first vacuum chamber is connected to be responsive to vacuum intensity at a first vacuum outlet communicating with the engine intake passage near the throttle valve and upstream therefrom. The control member is moved by vacuum intensity within a second vacuum chamber connected through a selector valve assembly to a second vacuum outlet connected to the engine intake passage downstream from the throttle valve. An electric switch responsive to vacuum intensity in the first vacuum outlet interrupts an electrical circuit through a solenoid coil forming a part of the selector valve assembly, to cause its valve body to move from a first position connecting the second vacuum chamber to the second vacuum outlet to a second position connecting said second vacuum chamber to atmosphere.

Control system for engine ignition timing

A spark advance and retard system for an automobile engine advances the spark timing when the automobile is cruising, and retards the spark timing when the automobile is idling, accelerating or decelerating. A device which detects cruising of the automobile employs three electrical switches connected in series: the first is opened by actuation of the automobile brake pedal, the second is closed by actuation of the accelerator pedal, and the third is closed by high vacuum conditions in the engine intake system. When all three switches have been closed for a predetermined time interval, a timer device actuated electrically controlled valves to cause a pneumatic operator to advance the spark timing.
