An optical incoupling element () provided in the form of a discrete item attachable on a lightguide () is provided, comprising a substrate (A) and at least one three-dimensionally formed optical surface (). The optical surface () is configured to incouple light incident thereto and to adjust direction of the incoupled light transmitted through an optical contact surface () established at an interface between the element substrate (A) and a lightguide medium () such, that the incoupled light acquires a propagation path through a lightguide medium () via a series of total internal reflections. The optical surface () may comprise at least on optical cavity pattern (). The element () is configured to receive light onto said at least one three-dimensionally formed optical surface () from a direction essentially parallel to a longitudinal plane of the planar lightguide (). A method for manufacturing the optical incoupling element (), related arrangement, optical unit () and uses are further provided.

An optical deflection tape () attachable on a lightguide () is provided, comprising a substrate (A) and at least one pattern () formed with a number of periodic pattern features () embedded in the substrate (A) and configured as optically functional cavities () filled with a material having a refractive index different from the refractive index of the material of the substrate (A) surrounding the cavity (). The present invention pertains to a one-side-protected polarizing film having a transparent protective film on only one surface of a polarizer, wherein: the polarizer contains a polyvinyl alcohol-based resin, has a thickness of 10 &#x3bc;m or less, and is designed to have a single-body transmittance T and a polarization degree P representing optical properties satisfying the condition of the following formula: P&#x3e;&#x2212;(10&#x2212;1)&#xd7;100 (provided that T&#x3c;42.3) or P&#x2265;99.9 (provided that T&#x2265;42.3); and the other surface of the polarizer has a transparent resin layer having a thickness of 0.2 &#x3bc;m or more and formed from a layer-forming material including a polyvinyl alcohol-based resin. Even when the polarizer has prescribed optical properties and the thickness is 10 &#x3bc;m or less, this one-side-protected polarizing film is capable of suppressing the occurrence of through cracks and nano-slits.
