A continuous vacuum processing apparatus including a slit-type sealing portion and a guide roller for guiding an object to be processed. The guide roller is provided at each of the two sides of the sealing portion or at one side thereof. Tension is applied to the object to be processed by another device provided between the guide rollers while the object is being conveyed, so as to enable it to be processed without being damaged.

A vertical hydro-hoist for conveying a slurry under pressure by using a liquid obtained from a chemical process as a driving liquid and method for operating the same, the hydro-hoist includes at least one feed chamber and a detector for detecting a relationship of specific gravities between a driving liquid, a slurry and a float desporent in the at least one feed chamber. A holding member is provided for holding the float and a device, provided for supplying or discharging a specific gravity adjusting liquid into and out of the float. An apparatus for producing pure water from raw water, comprises a reverse osmotic membrane unit, a polisher, an ultraviolet sterilizer, a high pressure pump for forcing raw water to flow through a reverse osmotic membrane in said reverse osmotic membrane unit to produce pure water permeated therethrough, and for feeding pure water to a use point, and a circulating line extending between said use point and a suction side of said high pressure pump for circulating pure water therebetween. With this construction, degradation of pure water due to stagnation is avoided.

Projections are removed from the surfaces of ion exchange resin particles by contacting the resin particles with a liquefied gas or supercritical gas in advance. The ion exchange resin thus prepared can remove ions from raw water so thoroughly that the water quality can be improved to that of ultra-pure water.

An impurity detector atomizes a liquid sample by injecting the sample into a chamber with a gas. In the chamber the liquid is heated, preferably by heating the gas prior to injection, to cause all the liquid to evaporate. The solid impurities contained in the liquid are thus entrained in the gas and carried to a detector region. The chamber is arranged so that all the gas and all the particles arrive at the detector region. A particle detector measures the number and size of the particles and from that measurement, the concentration of impurities in the sample can be determined. The system permits on-line operation, and produces accurate results.
