In order to make hard and soft contact lenses having a pore diameter and a pore density optimum for use as oxygen permeable contact lenses, the contact lens after molding is subjected to irradiation of a polyvalent heavy ion beam having a mass number of 2 to 100 (preferably 10 to 80) and an ion energy of 10M eV (preferably 50M eV) or higher, at an ion radiation density of 10 to 10.sup.9 ions/cm.sup.2 (preferably 10.sub.2 to 10.sub.5 ions/cm.sup.2) and thereafter ultrasonically etched (preferably at 10 to 50 MHz) at a temperature of 4 to 50.degree. C. (preferably 10.degree. to 30.degree. C.) in the presence of chloroacetic acid (preferably tricholoracetic acid).

Porous contact lens and method for making it

An electrophotographic photoreceptor comprises a photoconductive layer having a protective layer disposed thereon, said protective layer being formed by dehydrocondensation of the hydrolyzate of a perfluoroalkyl silane coupling agent, or the hydrolyzate of a mixture of a perfluoroalkyl silane coupling agent and a silane coupling agent. The photoreceptor is very useful in that it can exhibit a high performance even in an environment at a higher temperature and at a higher humidity and that it has a high resistance to the abrasion with a great number of sheets being printed and with the cleaning members and that it is capable of preserving a high resolution without any image blurring.

Electrophotographic photoreceptor having silicate with perfluoroalkyl

An electrophotographic photoreceptor comprises an electrically conductive support, a photoconductive layer provided thereon, and a protective layer coated on the photoconductive layer, wherein the protective layer comprises a product of uncatalized hydrolysis of a composition essentially consisting of at least one specific epoxysilane compound, at least one specific alkylalkoxysilane compound, and at least one specific aminosilane compound. The photoreceptor is very useful in that it is free from wear due to friction with paper and cleaning members, keeps high resolving power, and is sufficiently proof against continuous copying under conditions of high temperature and high humidity.

Electrophotographic photoreceptor

Hydrophilic monomers in a supercooled, transparent state, are polymerized in the presence of water. The polymers have low levels of residual monomers and exhibit good mechanical strength. The process provides materials useful as contact lenses.

Method of manufacturing soft contact lens material

A mixture of a specified siloxanylalkyl ester monomer and a specified vinyl monomer is polymerized by exposure to an ionizing radiation at low temperatures and the resulting polymer is worked with a lathe cut to form a contact lens. The contact lens obtained is free from any optical distortion, has good dimensional stability and exhibits high oxygen permeability. In a preferred embodiment, a monomer mixture comprising a siloxanylalkyl ester, a methacrylate or acrylate, N-vinylpyrrolidone, and a small amount of a dimethacrylate or diacrylate is exposed to a total dose of 1.times.10.sup.5 -5.times.10.sup.6 roentgens at a low temperature (-80.degree. C. to -20.degree. C. and at a dose rate of 8.times.10.sup.4 -2.times.10.sup.6 roentgens per hour, and the resulting polymer is worked into a contact lens by a suitable forming process involving cutting, grinding and polishing operations.

The efficiency of enzymatic saccharification and fermentation of cellulose in a waste cellulose resource can be increased by a preliminary treatment with ionizing radiation. This irradiation of the waste cellulose resource can be accelerated by the preliminary addition of an aqueous alkali solution.

A polymer composition containing a physiologically active substance which can be released at a controlled rate is prepared by contacting one or more polymerizable monomers with the physiologically active substance, making the monomers into a specific shape and then irradiating the shaped article with light or an ionizing radiation at a low temperature below room temperature to polymerize the polymerizable monomers.

Process for preparing a polymer composition

A polymer composition containing a physiologically active substance which can be released at a controlled rate is prepared by contacting one or more polymerizable monomers with the physiologically active substance, mking the monomers into a specific shape and then irradiating the shaped article with light or an ionizing radiation at a low temperature below room temperature to polymerize the polymerizable monomers.

In accordance with this invention, there is provided a primer composition prepared by dissolving in an organic solvent at least one diepoxy compound selected from the group consisting of: (1) polyalkylene glycol diglycidyl ether of the formula; ##STR1## (2) poly(alkylene glycol) diglycidyl ether of the formula; ##STR2## and (3) diepoxide derived from a bisphenol of the formula; (wherein R.sub.1 is a linear or branched alkylene group having less than 8 carbon atoms; R.sub.2 is a linear or branched alkyl group having less than 4 carbon atoms, R.sub.3 is a linear or branched alkylene group having less than 8 carbon atoms, or a binding group selected from the class consisting of ##STR3## l, m and n are each an integer of from 0 to less than 10, the sum of l and m being more than 1). Enzymes and/or bacteria cells are immobilized by forming an aqueous mixture of enzymes and/or bacteria cells and a hydrophobic, vitrifiable monomer in an amount of at least 76% by weight of all monomers present, and irradiating the mixture by means of ionizing radiation at a temperature less than -10.degree. C. to polymerize the monomer.

Soft contact lenses comprising a copolymer comprising at least one monomer of the general formula, ##EQU1## wherein X is H or CH.sub.3 and n is 2 or 3, at least one monomer of the general formula, ##EQU2## wherein X is H or CH.sub.3 and m is an integer of 4 to 13, and optionally at least one polymerizable monomer other than the monomers of the above-mentioned two groups are disclosed. These contact lenses are soft and flexible in the non-swollen state and are tougher and less susceptible to microbiological contamination than the hitherto known soft contact lenses. Also a novel process for preparation of these soft contact lenses is disclosed, which comprises cast-polymerizing a mixture of the above-mentioned monomers, cooling the resulting copolymer to a low temperature at which it stands rigid, and shaping the copolymer body into the lens form in the cooled rigid state.
