A synchronous electric machine operates as a starter-generator for an aircraft. When operating in a starting mode, a main stator of the machine is supplied with electrical power at a constant frequency. An exciter stator is supplied with variable frequency power. As rotational speed increases, the exciter variable frequency changes correspondingly to maintain synchronous operation of the machine and maximum torque. In a generator mode, variable frequency is applied to the exciter stator with the exciter frequency varying as a function of rotational speed of an engine driving the machine. This provides for a constant frequency output from the machine.

Position-controlled start from the AC line using a synchronous machine

A generator system is configured to supply two phase excitation current from an exciter rotor to a main generator rotor. When driven by a variable speed prime mover, the generator system provides relatively constant frequency AC power by independently controlling the main rotor flux rotational speed. The generator system includes an exciter stator that induces current in the exciter rotor windings at a desired frequency and phasing. The exciter rotor windings are electrically connected to the main rotor windings to provide two-phase excitation current to the main rotor windings. Excitation is supplied to the exciter stator from an exciter controller, which controls the frequency and phasing of the exciter excitation, based on the rotational speed of the generator, to maintain a constant output frequency. The exciter frequency control function of the exciter controller may be eliminated when the generator system is driven by a constant speed prime mover or when a narrow band variable frequency output is required.

Generator with quadrature AC excitation

A matrix converter circuit having two AC/AC matrix converters coupled in parallel in a first mode to power a starter and decoupled in a second mode to each power separate functions used in aircraft power applications. Three common functional modes include 1) start mode with two matrix converters operating in parallel powering the starter, 2) a motor mode where one matrix converter powers a motor, and 3) a constant frequency power mode where the other matrix converter provides constant frequency AC power.

AC/AC power converter for aircraft

A rotor resistor and switch combination may cause a starter/generator device to function as an asynchronous device when in a start mode. Thus, starting torque may result. A starter/generator device may include an exciter rotor winding, a main rotor winding, and a resistor and switch combination positioned between the exciter rotor winding and the main rotor winding to control a flow of current in the main rotor winding during a start mode of the starter/generator device. A method of optimizing starting torque of a starter/generator device without a start controller unit during a start mode may include providing a main rotor winding of the starter/generator device, and providing a control to control a flow of current in the main rotor winding during the start mode.

Aircraft engine starter/generator

A rotating electrical machine, such as an aircraft starter-generator, that may be operated in either a DC motor mode or an AC generator mode. The machine includes a main stator that is selectively configurable as a multi-pole AC stator and a multi-pole DC stator. The machine also includes DC brushes that are selectively moveable into, and out of, electrical contact the main rotor, to thereby electrically couple and decouple a DC power source to and from, respectively, the rotor windings.

Gas turbine engine starter generator with AC generator and DC motor modes

A starter-generator system may be used to supply sufficient starting torque to start an aircraft main engine. The main starter-generator stator winding may be connected to a constant frequency (CF) power source to create a rotating field in the main starter-generator air gap. This rotating field, in turn, may induce current on the main rotor winding, which may be a closed circuit formed by main rotor field winding and exciter armature winding. The interaction between the main rotor current and the air gap flux may give rise to the starting torque to start the main engine. Adjusting the voltage supplied to the exciter stator field winding can modify the induced voltage and current on the rotor circuit to control the rotor current and starting torque. The starter-generator system may also be used to start an aircraft main engine by directly connecting the main stator winding to a power source without powering the exciter stator.

Engine start system with quadrature AC excitation

A system is provided for cooling a stator coil of a rotating machine. In one embodiment, and by way of example only, the system includes a stator core, a radial core opening, and a sleeve. The stator core has an axially extending slot formed therein, an outer circumferential surface, and an inner circumferential surface. The radial core opening extends from the stator core outer circumferential surface to the axially extending slot. The sleeve is disposed within the axial slot and configured to surround the stator coil. The sleeve has a cooling fluid supply port formed therein that is aligned with the radial core opening.

System and method for direct liquid cooling of electric machines

A high speed, high power generator has its main stator and main rotor configured to provide enhanced cooling capability. The generator includes a generator housing, a stator, a shaft, and a rotor. The stator is mounted within the generator housing. The shaft is rotationally mounted within the generator housing, and includes an inner surface that defines an internal fluid flow passage, an outer surface, and a plurality of interlamination cooling supply orifices extending between the shaft inner and outer surfaces. The rotor is mounted on the shaft and includes a plurality of poles formed from laminations, and one or more interlamination disks. Each interlamination disk is disposed between at least two of the laminations and includes a plurality of interlamination flow passages that receive a cooling medium from the shaft and direct the cooling medium, via centrifugal force, through the rotor and onto the stator.

High power generator with enhanced heat removal

A high speed, high power generator has its main stator configured with one or more reduced-diameter sections. The generator includes a generator housing, a main rotor, and a main stator. The generator housing has a main stator cooling flow passage formed therein that is configured to receive a flow of a cooling medium. The main rotor is rotationally mounted in the generator housing. The main stator is mounted within the generator housing and surrounds at least a portion of the main rotor. The main stator includes a stator core coupled to the generator housing adjacent the main stator cooling flow passage, and includes two or more nominal-diameter sections and one or more reduced-diameter sections. The nominal-diameter sections each have a first outer diameter, and the reduced-diameter sections, each have a second outer diameter that is less than the first diameter. Each reduced-diameter section is disposed between two nominal-diameter sections and is in fluid communication with the stator cooling flow passage.

High power generator with enhanced stator heat removal

A starter-generator system is configured to supply power to an aircraft electrical bus having a rated AC voltage magnitude, or receive power from a start converter, and includes a rotor and a stator. The stator is disposed at least partially around at least a portion of the rotor and has at least one multi-phase stator winding set wound thereon that has an increased number of turns per phase that is greater than a least number of turns per phase needed to supply power to an aircraft electrical bus at the rated AC voltage magnitude. The increased number of stator turns results in reduced current drawn by the starter-generator during the motor mode, which improves the efficiency and introduces other benefits to the overall starting system.

Engine starter-generator optimized for start function

A starter-generator system is configured to be operable at multiple variable frequencies. The starter-generator includes a rotor and a stator. The rotor is configured to rotate and has a single main field winding wound thereon. The stator has at least a first stator winding set and second stator winding set independently wound thereon. Upon electrical excitation and rotation of the rotor the starter-generator supplies electrical power from each of the stator winding sets at different frequencies. Also, upon electrically exciting one or both of the stator winding sets with appropriate AC power, the rotor will rotate and generate a starting torque.

Starter-generator operable with multiple variable frequencies and voltages

A rotating electrical machine, such as an aircraft starter-generator, that may be operated in either a DC motor mode or an AC generator mode. The machine includes a conventionally wound main stator that is selectively configurable as a multi-pole AC stator and a multi-pole DC stator. The machine also includes rotor windings that are configured to be selectively coupled to either an exciter or a plurality of commutator segments, and DC brushes that are selectively moveable into, and out of, electrical contact with the commutator segments, to thereby electrically couple and decouple a DC power source to and from, respectively, the rotor windings.

Hybrid gas turbine engine starter-generator

A starter-generator system supplies a controllable torque to a gas turbine engine, to thereby assist in starting the gas turbine engine, by independently controlling excitation frequency and/or voltage magnitude. The starter-generator includes a multi-phase exciter stator, a rotationally mounted multi-phase exciter rotor, a multi-phase main stator, a rotationally mounted multi-phase main rotor, and an exciter controller. The rotationally mounted multi-phase exciter rotor has a plurality of exciter rotor windings wound thereon that, upon excitation thereof with a rotating electromagnetic exciter flux generated by the exciter stator, have non-rectified excitation currents induced therein. The rotationally mounted multi-phase main rotor has a plurality of main rotor windings wound thereon that are electrically connected to receive the non-rectified excitation currents induced in the exciter rotor windings and that, upon excitation thereof with a rotating electromagnetic flux and in response to the non-rectified excitation currents supplied thereto, have currents induced therein that generate a main rotor torque to thereby cause the multi-phase main rotor and the multi-phase exciter rotor to rotate. The exciter controller is electrically coupled to at least the exciter stator and is configured to selectively supply the electrical excitation thereto, to thereby selectively control the generated main rotor torque.

Brushless starter-generator with independently controllable exciter field

One embodiment of the invention relates to a low profile electric generator having a short axial length. A cylindrical rotor body defines an interior cavity and is coupled to a driveshaft along the axis of the cylindrical body. A first rotor assembly is coupled to the inner surface of the cylindrical body, the first rotor assembly defining a space to receive a first stator that is independent from the cylindrical body. A second rotor assembly is coupled to the outer surface of the cylindrical body and electrically coupled to the first rotor assembly. A second stator is arranged around the second rotor assembly, independent from the cylindrical body, and radially positioned about the axis of the cylindrical body. By arranging the generator components in such configuration, the axial length of the generator is reduced in comparison to a conventional generator.
