Systems and methods are disclosed for an actuator device or actuator control device to implement a low power savings mode. For example, a device can comprise an actuator arm including a first actuator and a second actuator, the second actuator configured to refine a movement of the actuator arm to a more precise position than use of merely the first actuator. A device can also comprise a control system configured to determine when the device is in an idle state and, when the device is in the idle state, disable the second actuator and perform a positional seek operation with the second actuator disabled. Power savings can occur from disabling the second actuator, which may also include disabling associated circuitry, such that it does not consume power or consumes a nominal (e.g., negligible or insignificant) amount of power during the associated seek operation.

Systems and methods for determining an occurrence of non-operation shock (NOS) in a disc drive are described. Such determining may be used to determine whether or not the disc drive should be recalibrated or compensated to account for changes induced by NOS. Determining NOS may be based at least in part on a harmonic of the spindle of the disc drive other than the first harmonic, such as a third harmonic of the spindle. In some embodiments, determining NOS may be based on the first harmonic of the spindle and at least one other harmonic of the spindle.

An apparatus includes a disk locked clock system and a feedforward microactuator compensator. The disk locked clock system is configured to estimate a timing error and generate a timing error signal. The feedforward microactuator compensator is configured to generate a microactuator compensation signal, without use of a vibration sensor signal, in response to the timing error signal.

Systems and methods for compensating for magnetoresistive (MR) jog offset direct current (DC) drift in a disc drive are described. In one embodiment, a method may include determining an occurrence of NOS, for example, by monitoring disc slip, to determine when the method should proceed. An MR jog offset DC drift amount is determined for each head of the disc drive. One of several approaches may be employed for determining the MR jog offset DC drift amount. By determining an MR jog offset DC drift amount for each head, a compensation profile is determined for the drive. The determined compensation profile may then be used during operation of the disc drive to compensate for the DC drift. One of several approaches may be employed for compensating based on the compensation profile.

An apparatus includes a microactuator controller configured to generate a microactuator control signal, a feedforward microactuator compensator configured to generate a microactuator compensation signal, and a microactuator model filter configured to filter a modified microactuator control signal. The microactuator compensation signal is configured to be injected into the microactuator control signal to generate the modified microactuator control signal. The microactuator model filter generates a filtered modified microactuator control signal and injects the filtered modified microactuator control signal into a position error signal to generate a modified position error signal.

Disturbance compensation for dual-stage servo system using vibration sensor

Systems, apparatuses, and processes having a dependent write fault threshold are disclosed. A first sector may have a first write fault threshold and a second sector, adjacent to the first sector, may have a second write fault threshold, and the write fault thresholds can be variable based on a position error signal value of an adjacent sector. In some embodiments, the adjacent sectors may each be in an adjacent track. In other embodiments, the adjacent sectors may be in the same track. Further, a track may have two write fault thresholds, a positive direction threshold and a negative direction threshold; in some embodiments, only one direction's threshold may be variable based on the position error signal of the adjacent sector, while the opposite direction's threshold may be set to a default (e.g. pre-determined not on a sector by sector basis) value.

Dependent write fault threshold

Systems and methods are disclosed having a write fault threshold for a set of tracks. A set of tracks may have a shared write fault threshold budget, and a write fault threshold for the second track may be selected based on the shared budget reduced by an off-track position error signal value of the first track. In certain embodiments, an apparatus may comprise a processor configured to determine a position error signal value for a first data track, set a write fault threshold for a second data track adjacent to the first data track based on the position error signal, and write data to the second data track based on the write fault threshold.

An apparatus includes a controller configured to be coupled to a read/write head. The controller is configured to perform various operations including detecting a change in a time interval difference between servo sectors of a servo marked recording medium, converting the change to an offset signal that compensates for the change, and positioning the read/write head relative to the servo mark recording medium in response to the offset signal. The change in the time interval difference is representative of disk slip.

An apparatus comprises a controller configured to detect a seek failure of a read/write head. The controller is additionally configured to perform a seek recovery operation in accordance with a recovery sequence in response to the seek failure; the recovery sequence comprising a plurality of recovery procedures. Further, the controller is configured to determine if the seek recovery operation is successful and determine which of the recovery procedures provided the success. And, the controller is configured to dynamically calculate the success rate of each recovery procedure, modify the recovery sequence based on the success of the seek recovery operation and based on the success rate of recovery procedures providing the success.

A multi-stage tracking control system includes at least a main actuator and a microactuator. The tracking control system is switched to a single-stage mode so that the main actuator alone provides tracking. A disturbance signal is applied to the microactuator while in the single-stage mode, and a failure condition of the microactuator is determined based on a position error generated in response to the disturbance signal.
