Systems and methods are disclosed for categorizing error types encountered in data access operations based on bit information from a data segment. An example apparatus includes a circuit configured to perform error recovery for one or more data segments including determining an error recovery operation of a plurality of error recovery operations to perform based on bit information of the one or more data segments. The example circuit also performs the determined error recovery operation.

Implementations disclosed herein provide a method comprising iteratively reading data from a failing media sector prior to a an error minimization operation, analyzing read data at each iteration using an error minimization operation to determine sections of read data as good data, storing the good data in a buffer during each iteration, and using the good data as input for the read data during a subsequent error retry operation. In another implementation, the method further comprises comparing new read data with stored good data in the buffer, and replacing the stored good data with the new read data if the new read data has a higher quality than the stored good data.

The disclosure is related to systems and methods of On the Fly Formatting. Various parameters that influence areal density of hard disc regions can be changed on the fly based on storage capacity and reliability needs. Further adjustments can be made to the formatting of the region to fine tune achievable storage capacity and reliability values. In some cases, the formatting can include error correction code strength, gap widths between user data sectors and servo data sectors, other characteristics or parameters, or any combinations thereof.
