An electronic device may be provided with wireless circuitry and control circuitry. The wireless circuitry may include a phased antenna array. Sensors and other circuitry in the electronic device may generate sensor data such as accelerometer data, gyroscope data, magnetometer data, location data, and spatial ranging data. The wireless circuitry may establish and maintain one or more wireless links with external devices based on the sensor data as the device moves over time. For example, the wireless circuitry may perform physical layer beam adjustments, inter-radio access technology handovers, intra-radio access technology handovers, and/or dual connectivity adjustments based on the sensor data. This may allow the device to maintain one or more wireless links without having to sweep the signal beam of the phased antenna array over its entire field of view each time the device has moved.

Electronic devices having sensor-augmented wireless link management

A first communication device generates a PHY preamble of a PHY data unit to include a first orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbol corresponding to a legacy signal field. The legacy signal field includes i) a length subfield, and ii) a rate subfield. The length subfield and the rate subfield indicate a duration of the PHY data unit, and the legacy signal field is formatted according to a legacy second communication protocol. The first communication device generates the PHY preamble of a PHY data unit to include a second OFDM symbol corresponding to a duplicate of the legacy signal field, and a plurality of additional OFDM symbols corresponding to a non-legacy signal field. The first communication device sets the length subfield of the legacy signal field to a length value such that a remainder value resulting from dividing the length value by three, indicates that the PHY data unit conforms to the first communication protocol.

Physical layer frame format for WLAN

In a method for adapting an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) numerology configuration for use in a communication network one or more OFDM numerology configurations are adaptively selected at a first communication device to be used in communication with one or more second communication devices. Adaptively one or more OFDM numerology configurations includes selecting at least one combination of two or more of (i) a guard interval duration, (ii) a tone spacing, (iii) a starting location of the selected guard interval duration, and (iv) a starting location of the selected tone spacing. A physical layer (PHY) data unit to be transmitted to a second communication device is generated at the first communication device. The PHY data unit is generated using one of the one or more adaptively selected OFDM numerology configurations to generate OFDM symbols of at least a portion of the PHY data unit.

Adaptive orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) numerology in a wireless communication network

Some embodiments enable secure time of flight (SToF) measurements for wireless communication packets that include secure ranging packets with zero padded random sequence waveforms, including at higher frequency bands (e.g., 60 GHz) and in non-line of sight (NLOS) scenarios. Some embodiments provide a flexible protocol to allow negotiation of one or more security parameters and/or SToF operation parameters. For example, some embodiments employ: phase tracking and signaling to support devices with phase noise constraints to mitigate phase noise at higher frequencies; determining a number of random sequences (RSs) used for SToF to support consistency checks and channel verification; additional rules supporting sub-phases of the SToF operation; and/or determining First Path (FP), Sub-Optimal, and/or Hybrid path AWV modes and the pre-conditioning usage of these modes.

Ranging using beamforming antenna weight vectors and secure ranging packet with phase tracking

A first communication device generates a physical layer (PHY) preamble for a PHY data unit to be transmitted via a communication channel, the PHY data unit conforming to a first communication protocol. Generating the PHY preamble includes generating a legacy portion of the PHY preamble to include a legacy signal field, which is decodable by one or more second communication devices that conform to a second communication protocol to determine a duration of the PHY data unit. The PHY preamble is generated to also include a duplicate of the legacy signal field in the PHY preamble, wherein presence of the duplicate of the legacy signal field indicates to one or more third communication devices that conform to the first communication protocol that the PHY data unit conforms to the first communication protocol. The first communication device generates the PHY data unit to include the PHY preamble and a PHY payload.

A communication device associated with a first wireless communication network transmits an indication that a communication channel in an unlicensed frequency band is being utilized by the first wireless communication network. The indication is transmitted to an access point of a second wireless communication network. The first wireless communication network utilizes a first wireless communication protocol developed for use in licensed frequency bands, and the second wireless communication network utilizes a second wireless communication protocol developed for use in the unlicensed frequency band. The indication is transmitted by the communication device to prompt the access point of the second wireless communication network, to determine that i) the communication channel cannot be used by the second wireless communication network, or ii) the second wireless communication network is to temporarily yield the communication channel to the first wireless communication network.

Coexistence techniques for wide area network devices operating in unlicensed bands

Accordingly, systems and methods for managing power when the number of training and data tones are increased in a wireless communications system are provided. An L-SIG field is generated that includes a set of data and pilot tones, wherein the pilot tones are inserted between the data tones in the set of data and pilot tones. A plurality of training tones is added to the L-SIG field before and after the set of data and pilot tones. A symbol is generated that includes the L-SIG field, an L-LTF field, and a data field, wherein the training tones of the L-SIG field provide channel estimates for the data field. Power of the L-LTF field is managed relative to power of the L-SIG field in the generated symbol in a time domain.

Methods and apparatus for increasing the number of training and data tones in wireless communications systems

A physical layer (PHY) preamble of a PHY data unit is generated, including generating one or more short orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols for one or more long training fields of the PHY preamble. Each of the one or more short OFDM symbols corresponds to a frequency domain sequence having a number of tones. Every N-th tone is modulated and tones between modulated tones are zero tones, where N is a positive integer greater than one. A time duration of each short OFDM symbol is 1/N of a time duration of a full inverse discrete Fourier transform (IDFT) of the frequency domain sequence. A data portion of the PHY data unit is generated, including generating one or more long OFDM symbols. A time duration of each long OFDM symbol is greater than a time duration of each of the one or more short OFDM symbols.

Compressed preamble for a wireless communication system

This disclosure relates to techniques for performing secure ranging wireless communication. A first wireless device may receive a ranging packet from a second wireless device in a wireless manner. The ranging packet may include a first random sequence portion and a second random sequence portion. The first wireless device may perform one or more channel and noise estimations for the ranging packet. The first wireless device may perform one or more security checks for the ranging packet based on any or all of the first random sequence portion, the second random sequence portion, or the channel and noise estimation(s).

Secure ranging wireless communication

Methods for performing error recovery during a ranging procedure may include negotiation one or more ranging parameters, including a set of secure training sequences and receipt of a first ranging frame that may include a first dialog token and may have an appended first secure training sequence. The first ranging frame may be decoded based on the first dialog token but not correlated based on the first secure training sequence. A first acknowledgment that may include an appended second secure training sequence may be transmitted. The second secure training sequence may be associated with a prior dialog token. A second ranging frame that may include a second dialog token and may have an appended third secure training sequence may be received. The second ranging frame may be decoded based on the third dialog token and correlated based on the third secure training sequence.

FTM based secure ranging error recovery

Apparatus and method for flexible secure time of flight measurements

A boundary within a last orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbol of a PHY data unit is determined. Pre-encoder padding bits are added to a set of information bits to generate a set of padded information bits such that the set of padded information bits, after being encoded, fill one or more OFDM symbols up to the boundary within the last OFDM symbol. The set of padded information bits are encoded to generate a set of coded bits. A PHY preamble is generated to include a subfield that indicates the boundary. The one or more OFDM symbols are generated to include (i) the set of coded information bits in the one or more OFDM symbols up to the boundary to allow a receiving device to stop decoding the one or more OFDM symbols at the boundary, and (ii) post-encoder padding bits in the last OFDM symbol following the boundary.

Padding for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols in a wireless communication system

A communication device generates a first portion of a physical layer (PHY) preamble of a PHY data unit to include a first plurality of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols. Each OFDM symbol of the first plurality of OFDM symbols is modulated on at most X OFDM subcarriers, where X is a positive integer greater than one. The communication device generates a second portion of the PHY preamble to include a second plurality of OFDM symbols. Each OFDM symbol of the second plurality of OFDM symbols is modulated on at most N*X OFDM subcarriers, where N is a positive integer greater than one. The communication device generates a PHY data portion of the PHY data unit to include one or more third OFDM symbols. Each third OFDM symbol is modulated on at most N*X OFDM subcarriers. The communication device transmits the PHY data unit via the wireless communication channel.

Generating packets having orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols

Communicating wireless devices collaborate and utilize waveforms to enable secure channel estimation. To protect against a repetitive replay attack, some embodiments include Single Carrier Physical Layer (SC-PHY) waveforms and/or interpolated OFDM waveforms that do not include a repeatable or predictable structure. The waveforms are transmitted in ranging packet structures that are compatible with legacy 802.11 technologies that do not utilize secure channel estimation. The ranging packets are received in combination with the information previously exchanged to enable the receiving wireless system to securely determine a channel estimate (e.g., determine a channel estimate without an interloper transmission that is not an authentic first arrival path in a multi-path channel between the wireless systems). Thus, one or both of the wireless systems can estimate the distance between them (or range). Devices utilizing legacy 802.11 technologies may receive the ranging packet structures and determine durations for deferring access to the channel.
