An accessory gear box for a gas turbine engine having a drive shaft with a rotational axis and a tower shaft coupled to the drive shaft is provided. The accessory gear box includes a first plurality of gears arranged, which extend along a first axis substantially parallel to the rotational axis of the drive shaft. The accessory gear box includes a second plurality of gears, which extend along a second axis. The accessory gear box includes a first shaft, with one of the first plurality of gears coupled to the first shaft, and one of the second plurality of gears coupled to a second shaft. The one of the second plurality of gears coupled to the first shaft includes a first engagement surface and a second engagement surface, and the second engagement surface is coupled to another one of the second plurality of gears to drive the second shaft.

Transverse mounted accessory gearbox

A gas turbine engine and an accessory gear box (AGB) are provided for. The gas turbine engine comprises a drive shaft, a compressor, a combustor and an exhaust turbine, where the exhaust turbine and the compressor are coaxially connected by the drive shaft. The gas turbine engine further comprises an engine casing of varying diameters circumferentially enveloping the compressor, the combustor and the exhaust turbine with a waist located between the compressor and the combustor. The gas turbine engine also includes an accessory gear box (AGB) attached to the engine casing at the waist, the AGB comprising a gear rotating on an axis extending in a transverse direction relative to that of the drive shaft.

A shaft oil purge system comprises an entrance seal, an exit seal and a buffer air flow. The entrance seal comprises a circumferential carbon seal running on an inner shaft and another carbon seal running on an outer shaft. The exit seal comprises a labyrinth seal positioned on the inner shaft and towards the exit end of the annulus between the shafts. An abradable material filled groove positioned radially outward from the exit seal allows the inner shaft to rub without compromising the integrity of the outer shaft. The buffer air flow enters the annulus from a cavity at the entrance seal, purges oil from the annulus and improves the efficiency of the seals.

Shaft oil purge system

A seal pressure vent system for a waterjet propulsion apparatus including a water intake section and a pumping unit. The pumping unit is designed such that in operation the seal pressure vent system provides a fluidic path for the flow of high pressure water away from a lip seal assembly toward a near ambient pressure region. The seal vent system includes a plurality of fluid passageways formed in a stator structure in conjunction with a water barrier ring, a tail cone including an extended flange, or a modified stator web structure.

Seal pressure vent system for a waterjet apparatus

This invention discloses a completely different hydrodynamic gas seal configuration from both the Rayleigh bearing and other prior art. Instead of the shallow, wide, and short single pocket geometry for the Rayleigh bearing, and instead of the multiple depth grooves of the other prior art teachings, the hydrodynamic seal in this invention has a sealing face with lift pockets therein that are deep (normally in the range of about 0.010 inches to about 0.025 inches deep), narrow, long, multiple, coextensive, parallel, and single-depth. This invention incorporates the same basic hydraulic principle of generating pressure rise by the shearing gradient between the rotating shaft and stationary carbon elements, and therefore produces a force which is opposite in direction to the rubbing force generated by the ambient pressure drop across the seal. In this invention the forces are more evenly balanced across the axial face of the seal ring segments, thereby accommodating any conicity of the shaft race. Seals of both the circumferential type and the face type are provided. Furthermore, the lift pockets are of a depth sufficient that, in the event of wear of the sealing face, an increase in pressure in the lift pockets occurs as a consequence of the reduction in depth to move the seal member away from the rotating shaft, thereby causing the seal gap to be self-regulating in size.

Hydrodynamic lift seal for use with compressible fluids

A seal structure is provided having a configuration with a very small seal gap between a relatively stationary seal member and a complementary surface on a movable (rotatable) member (such as a rotating shaft) adjacent to which the stationary seal member is mounted. The stationary seal member is movable toward and away from the movable seal member so as to vary the seal gap therebetween. The seal is effective in applications where an incompressible fluid is provided on the high pressure side of the stationary seal member so that leakage along the seal gap is of an incompressible fluid into a lower pressure region on the other side of the seal gap. A sealing dam is provided on the stationary seal member on its sealing face adjacent the low pressure end of the seal gap. A plurality of elongated pads are formed on the sealing surface of the stationary seal member on the high pressure side of the sealing dam, extending perpendicularly to the direction of leakage flow along the seal gap. Lift pockets are formed in predetermined pads and positioned such that fluid is forced into the pocket by the velocity shearing gradient between the movable and stationary members to generate an increased pressure in the pockets to move the stationary seal member away from the movable member to increase the seal gap between the two. The lift pocket is of a depth sufficient, in the event of wear of the lift pocket surface, to result in a pressure increase in the lift pocket as a consequence of its reduction in depth to move the seal member away from the movable member, thereby causing the seal gap to become self-regulating in size. Several embodiments and modifications are presented.
