Techniques and apparatuses are described that implement a metal structure for steering and broadening millimeter-wave (mmWave) antenna coverage. A user device includes at least one mmWave antenna that produces a near-field radiation region and a far-field radiation pattern. Disposed within the near-field radiation region is the metal structure comprising one or more metal pieces. The metal pieces are able to reflect energy associated with the far-field radiation pattern or produce another far-field radiation pattern based on currents induced in the metal pieces by the near-field radiation region in such a way that the far-field radiation pattern from the mmWave antenna is positively affected (e.g., steered and/or broadened). In this way, the far-field radiation pattern can be effectively steered and/or broadened with a simple cost and space-effective design.

This document describes a multimode high-isolation antenna system and associated methods and systems. The described antenna system is implemented on a generally-circular printed circuit board and can be used for wideband and ultra-wideband applications. The multimode high-isolation antenna system includes two orthogonal antennas separated by a decoupling structure. This arrangement provides high isolation between the antennas and enables five unique resonant modes of operation for the multimode high-isolation antenna system.

Techniques and apparatuses are described that implement a compact multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna module with two monopole antennas and a decoupling circuit. Due to a physical proximity of the two monopole antennas within the compact MIMO antenna module, the two monopole antennas indirectly couple to each other through one or more coupling paths. The decoupling circuit attenuates the resulting interference by providing a direct coupling path between the two monopole antennas. In this way, the decoupling circuit effectively counteracts the indirect coupling between the two monopole antennas to enable the two monopole antennas to behave substantially independent of each other for MIMO applications. The compact MIMO antenna module can be implemented within space-constrained devices and realize improved performance relative to other antenna modules that have a similar antenna spacing and do not include the decoupling circuit.

Compact multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna module

Methods and systems are described for proximity condition detection of a recovery from sensor proximity saturation caused by water immersion of a user device. The device transmits data at a first transmit power level using an antenna. In one system, a proximity condition checker determines that a first proximity sensor and a second proximity sensor are saturated in an unknown state after a power event where the saturation caused at least in part by the presence of water in proximity to the first proximity sensor and the second proximity sensor. The proximity condition checker determines that 1) both the first proximity sensor and the second proximity sensor are no longer saturated and 2) water is no longer in proximity to the first proximity sensor and the second proximity sensor. In response, the user device can transmit data at an increased second transmit power level using the antenna.

Antenna structures and methods of operating the same are described. One apparatus includes a radio frequency (RF) circuitry, a housing, an antenna structure, and multi-connector switching circuitry. The RF circuitry includes a first RF feed for a first frequency and a second RF feed for a second frequency. The housing includes a first strip element disposed at a periphery of the housing, where the first strip element is physically separated from the housing by a first cutout in the housing. The antenna structure includes the first strip element coupled to a first multi-connector switching circuitry by a first connector and a second connector. The first multi-connector switching circuitry coupled to the first RF feed and the second RF feed where the first switching circuit to connect the first strip element to the first RF feed in a first mode of the first multi-connector switching circuitry.

Antenna structures and methods of operating the same are described. One apparatus includes a radio frequency (RF) circuitry, a housing, an antenna structure, and multi-connector switching circuitry. The RF circuitry includes a first RF feed for a first frequency and a second RF feed for a second frequency. The housing includes a first strip element disposed at a periphery of the housing, where the first strip element is physically separated from the housing by a first cutout in the housing. The antenna structure includes the first strip element with a first connector, a second connector, and a third connector coupled to the multi-connector switching circuitry. The multi-connector switching circuitry connects the first RF feed coupled to the first RF feed and the second RF feed where the first switching circuit to connect the first strip element to the first RF feed in a first mode of the first multi-connector switching circuitry.

Antenna structures and methods of operating the same of an electronic device are described. One apparatus includes a circuit board and an antenna having a ground element disposed on the circuit board. A ground-extension bracket is coupled to the ground element and oriented orthogonally to the circuit board. The antenna further includes a radiating element disposed on the circuit board and oriented linearly with respect to the ground-extension bracket. The antenna, in response to a radio frequency (RF) signal, is configured to radiate electromagnetic energy in a radiation pattern at an angle of polarization with respect to a plane of the circuit board, where the angle of polarization is acute and angled towards the ground-extension bracket.

In a disclosed method, a computing device receiver, from a wireless receiver (RX), first data indicative of channel properties of a first communication link between the wireless receiver (RX) in a first device and a wireless transmitter (TX) in a second device. The first device and the second device are located in a building. The computing device further executes a neural network to process the first data to distinguish humans from stationary objects within the building and detect presence of the human in the building. The computing device transmits result data indicative of the presence to at least one of the first device or the second device.

Antenna structures and methods of operating the same are described. An antenna structure may include an antenna carrier, a first antenna disposed on the first antenna carrier and coupled to a first radio frequency (RF) feed, a second antenna disposed on the first antenna carrier and coupled to a second RF feed, a third antenna disposed on the first antenna carrier and coupled to a third RF feed, and a fourth antenna disposed on the first antenna carrier and coupled to a fourth RF feed. The first antenna and the second antenna may be located along a first axis of the antenna carrier that passes through a center of the antenna carrier. The third antenna and the fourth antenna may be located along a second axis of the antenna carrier that passes through a center of the antenna carrier.

This disclosure describes a power unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that may generate a current from a conductor of an overhead power line carrying an AC power signal. The power UAV has a receptor that includes a secondary coil. Current is generated by the secondary coil of the receptor from magnetic fields emanating from the overhead power lines while the power UAV is flying. The generated current may be used to fly the power UAV, recharge an energy storage device of the power UAV, or be provided to another UAV. In various implementations, while the power UAV is flying, the power UAV may receive another UAV, recharge the other UAV, and then release the UAV to resume flying. In various implementations, the power UAV may also monitor characteristics of the power delivery system.

Antenna structures and methods of operating the same are described. One antenna structure includes a ground plane, a feed point, an antenna element, and a parasitic element. The feed point can be coupled to the antenna element and can receive a signal to cause the antenna structure to radiate electromagnetic energy. The antenna element includes: a first portion that extends in a first direction from the feeding point at the RF feed; a second portion that extends from a distal end of the first portion; a third portion that extends from a side of the second portion; a fourth portion that extends from the third portion; and a fifth portion that extends from the fourth portion. The parasitic element includes: a sixth portion that extends from the fourth portion; and the seventh portion that extends from the sixth portion to the ground plane.

Dual-band antenna structures and methods of operating the same of an electronic device are described. One apparatus includes a radio frequency (RF) feed and a dual-band antenna structure coupled to the RF feed at a feeding point and coupled to a ground plane at a grounding point. The structure includes a first loop antenna and a second loop antenna, both coupled to the feeding point and the grounding point. The first loop antenna radiates electromagnetic energy in a first resonant mode in a first frequency band and the second loop antenna radiates electromagnetic energy in a second resonant mode in a second frequency band and radiates electromagnetic energy in a third resonant mode in the first frequency band. Surface currents create three or more hot spots of magnetic field.

Low specific absorption rate (SAR) dual-band antenna structure

Systems and methods for addressing an inadvertent decrease in transmission energy/power due to triggering a proximity sensor by a cover disposed on a computing device. In an embodiment, a cover sensor may be incorporated into the device. The cover sensor may be used to detect the presence of a cover on the device, as well as whether the cover is in an open or closed position. The output of the cover sensor may then be used to adjust a trigger/proximity threshold of the proximity sensor to account for the presence and position of the cover on the device. In this manner the device may avoid unnecessary power backoff caused by proximity of the cover, rather than proximity of the user. This improves the over the air (OTA) performance of the device, as well as the user experience.
