The described technology is generally directed towards selecting, by user equipment, a selected maximum transmission unit (MTU) packet size for wireless data transfer based on radio signal conditions. In one aspect, reference signal received power (RSRP) and reference signal received quality (RSRQ) are used to select the MTU packet size, e.g., by using RSRP and RSRQ as indices to a lookup table of predetermined MTU packet sizes, such as previously determined by field testing. In general, smaller MTU packet sizes are used with poorer quality radio signal conditions. The selected MTU packet size may be increased or decreased based on actual performance data and/or based on changed radio signal conditions, such as for a subsequent data transfer session. The user equipment may comprise a Cat-M device that transfers data related to Machine-Type Communications (MTC)/Machine to Machine (M2M) communications.

Maximum transmission unit size selection for wireless data transfer

The techniques and/or systems described herein are configured to determine a set of update operations to transition a network from an observed network state to a target network state and to generate an update dependency graph used to dynamically schedule the set of update operations based on constraint(s) defined to ensure reliability of the network during the transition. The techniques and/or systems dynamically schedule the set of update operations based on feedback. For example, the feedback may include an indication that a previously scheduled update operation has been delayed, has failed, or has been successfully completed.

Dynamic scheduling of network updates

Coverage and usage-based limitations to a wireless communications network can be estimated by monitoring network performance during a periods in which the network is relatively busy and relatively non-busy. For example, differences in distributions of bit error rates for calls in such time periods can be used to assess whether network limitations are associated with reduced-coverage zones or are usage-based. Such estimates can be used to target specific network features that limit network performance.

Method and apparatus to separate coverage limited and co-channel limited interferences

Systems and methods for providing alerts to end users of networked enabled portable devices are provided so that the end users are made aware when broadcast emergency alerts are issued. The systems and methods provide a way for a portable device to receive information about an emergency alert broadcast of which the user should be aware, e.g., from the EAS, and to notify the user of the emergency alert. A flag provides an indication the EAS should be on and the systems and method override the settings made by a user to a portable device to enable EAS reception. The user may then be automatically taken to the emergency alert information by having the portable device automatically tune to the emergency broadcast information, or the user may optionally retrieve the emergency information by tuning to the emergency broadcast channel, or the user may otherwise be presented with a reference to the emergency data (e.g., a link to the information).

An environment is described in which a processing system provides application-level usage information to users. In one scenario, for example, the processing system may provide personal usage information to a user who is operating a user device. The personal usage information itemizes the amount of data (and/or other resources) that has been consumed by each application run by the user device. In another scenario, the processing system may provide expected usage information associated with at least one candidate application provided by a marketplace system. The expected usage information describes an expected consumption of data (and/or other resources) by the candidate application upon running the candidate application by the user device. The processing system can tailor the expected usage information that it sends to a particular user based on user profile data. The user profile data describes a manner in which users operate applications.

The subject disclosure is directed towards a technology that automatically mitigates datacenter failures, instead of relying on human intervention to diagnose and repair the network. Via a mitigation pipeline, when a network failure is detected, a candidate set of components that are likely to be the cause of the failure is identified, with mitigation actions iteratively targeting each component to attempt to alleviate the problem. The impact to the network is estimated to ensure that the redundancy present in the network will be able to handle the mitigation action without adverse disruption to the network.

Functionality is described herein for measuring the performance of a network. The functionality operates by generating a probe packet and injecting the probe packet into the network. The probe packet is configured, using one or more layers of encapsulation, to target a particular network component of interest in the network, or to target a particular collection of network components in the network. A switch to which the probe packet is addressed operates by: (a) generating mirrored information that is associated with the probe packet; (b) decapsulating the probe packet (with respect to its outermost encapsulation) to produce a new probe packet; and (c) passing the new probe packet to a downstream network component, in accordance with a destination address associated with the new probe packet. The functionality uses the mirrored information that has been collected in the above manner to detect various anomalies in the network.

A mobile broadcast service center and a mobile wireless network to deliver broadcast video to mobile wireless devices is described. When the mobile broadcast service center receives a request to deliver a broadcast video channel to a target mobile wireless device, it designates as target an intermediate node in the network that serves the target mobile wireless device. The mobile broadcast service center first determines if an existing channel bundle is routed to the target intermediate node. If this first determination is negative, the mobile broadcast service center routes a new channel bundle to the target intermediate node, including the requested broadcast video channel. If the first determination is positive, the mobile broadcast service center then determines if the requested broadcast video channel is in the existing channel bundle. If this second determination is negative, then it adds the requested broadcast video channel to the existing channel bundle.

A method and apparatus for performing a software upgrade are disclosed. The method determines a plurality of mobile endpoint devices affected by a wireless network access software upgrade, and schedules a deployment of the wireless network access software upgrade. The method transmits a notification to the plurality of mobile endpoint devices, wherein the notification is configured to cause each of the plurality of mobile endpoint devices to store user settings in a memory of each of the plurality of mobile endpoint devices. The method downloads the wireless network access software upgrade wirelessly to the plurality of mobile endpoint devices, wherein the wireless network access software upgrade is configured to cause each of the plurality of mobile endpoint devices to install the wireless network access software upgrade and to restore the user settings from the memory of each of the plurality of mobile endpoint devices.
