Embodiments of method and systems are disclosed. An embodiment of a method for optical navigation involves generating light at a light source, directing the light to a navigation surface, detecting light reflected from the navigation surface toward a sensor array, and generating movement information, which is indicative of movement of the navigation surface relative to the sensor array, in response to the detected light. Generating the movement information involves determining the speed of the movement, comparing the speed of the movement to a movement threshold, selecting a processing algorithm from a plurality of processing algorithms in response to the comparison, and processing the movement information according to the selected processing algorithm. In an embodiment, the processing algorithms include an adaptive navigation algorithm and a sensor resolution adjustment algorithm.

A user input device to generate a shutter threshold adaptive to ambient light conditions. The user input device includes a sensor array, a shutter controller, and a threshold generator. The sensor array obtains image data in response to light incident on the sensor array. The shutter controller is coupled to the sensor array. The shutter controller controls a shutter time during which the sensor array is responsive to the light incident on the sensor array according to a shutter value. The threshold generator is coupled to the shutter controller. The threshold generator dynamically generates a shutter threshold corresponding to the shutter value. A motion detection apparatus and method for detecting motion in an apparatus being monitored, and for controlling operations of the apparatus being monitored. First logic of the apparatus processes electrical signals output from an optical detector to produce values that represent movement or an absence of movement of the apparatus being monitored. Second logic of the apparatus receives the values from the first logic and processes them to determine whether the values indicate that the apparatus being monitored has moved. When a determination is made that the apparatus being monitored has not moved, the apparatus being monitored is change from a current mode of operations to a different mode of operations.

Method and apparatus for detecting motion of an apparatus and for controlling the operations of the apparatus in accordance with the detected motion

In one embodiment, movement between a surface and an imager is tracked by using the imager to acquire a series of digital images of the surface. Each of the digital images represents a pattern of light that is reflected from the surface. If a first number of the digital images have surface qualities that are above a surface quality threshold set to an initial value, ones of the series of digital images are compared to track movement between the surface and the imager. If a second number of the digital images have surface qualities that are below the surface quality threshold, then i) the surface quality threshold is dynamically lowered to a new value, and thereafter ii) ones of the series of digital images are compared to track movement between the surface and the imager. Other embodiments are also disclosed.
