The present disclosure is generally related to a magnetic media drive employing a magnetic recording head. The magnetic recording head comprises a main pole and a wrap-around shield surrounding at least two sides of the main pole at a media facing surface. The wrap-around shield comprises an electroplated, laminated NiFeX film, where X is one of Re, Cr, or Ir. The NiFeX film comprises about 1 atomic percent to about 12 atomic percent of X, about 30 atomic percent to about 50 atomic percent of Ni, and balance of Fe. The NiFeX film comprises a plurality of layers, each layer comprising a first sublayer having a Re content of about 1 atomic percent to about 43 atomic percent and a second sublayer having a Re content of about 0 atomic percent to about 12 atomic percent. The NiFeX film increases the damping constant of the magnetic recording head.

A magnetic recording head having an air bearing surface (ABS) includes a main pole, a side shield laterally spaced from the main pole by a first side gap and a second side gap, an electrically conductive non-magnetic gap material layer disposed between the main pole and the side shield in the first side gap, and a dielectric non-magnetic gap material matrix and a conformal dielectric spacer layer disposed between the main pole and the side shield in the second side gap. The dual side gap recording head can improve on track performance on write gap peak field, on track performance on write field gradient, ATI off track performance, WATER reliability and can provide advantageous writer and side shield saturation properties.

A magnetic write apparatus has a media-facing surface (MFS) and includes an auxiliary pole, coil(s) and a main pole having a pole tip and a yoke. The pole tip occupies part of the MFS. The yoke has a yoke length measured from the MFS in a yoke direction perpendicular to the MFS. The yoke length is less than four microns. The main pole has a total length in the yoke direction and a width in a cross-track direction. The main pole is continuous along the total length. The aspect ratio of the main pole is the total length divided by the width and exceeds one. The main pole includes surface(s) having a nonzero acute flare angle from the MFS. The auxiliary pole is adjacent to the main pole and recessed from the MFS by not more than 1.05 micron. The coil(s) energizes the main pole and have not more than two turns.

Magnetic recording write apparatus having a pole having an aspect ratio greater than one and an auxiliary pole

A method provides a magnetic write apparatus. The method includes providing a pole including a pole tip, a yoke, a pole bottom and a pole top. The pole is seam free and formed vertically in a direction from the pole bottom toward the pole top. At least one coil for energizing the pole is also provided. In some aspects, providing the pole may include removing a portion of an intermediate layer to form a trench therein. The trench has a shape and location corresponding to the pole, a bottom, a top and sides. A conductive layer is deposited in the trench and on a top surface of the intermediate layer. Insulating layer(s) are provided on the sides of the trench. Only part of the conductive layer on the trench bottom is exposed. Pole material(s) are grown on the exposed portion of the conductive layer to provide the pole.

Method for providing a magnetic recording write apparatus having a seamless pole

Systems and methods for controlling stray fields of a magnetic feature are provided. One such method can involve selecting a plurality of materials for a magnetic feature, selecting a plurality of additives, combining the plurality of materials for the magnetic feature and the plurality of additives in an electrolyte solution to form a combined solution, adding nitrogen to the combined solution, degassing the combined solution, depositing the combined solution as a thin film on a wafer using pulse plating, and lapping the thin film to form an edge of the magnetic feature. In several embodiments, the magnetic feature is a component of a magnetic transducer such as a writer pole, a reader shield, or a writer shield.

Methods for controlling stray fields of magnetic features using magneto-elastic anisotropy

A magnetic apparatus has a media-facing surface (MFS), a pole, a write gap at the MFS, a trailing shield, coil(s) and a nonmagnetic refill material. The pole includes a pole tip proximate to the MFS. The trailing shield includes a pedestal and a recessed portion. The pedestal occupies a portion of the MFS. The recessed portion has a front surface at an acute angle from the MFS and is recessed from the MFS by a distance of not more than 0.8 micrometers. The write gap is between the pedestal and the pole tip. The coil(s) energize the pole and have at least one turn. The coil(s) are between the recessed portion of the trailing shield and the pole. The trailing shield is between the nonmagnetic refill material and the pole. A portion of the nonmagnetic refill material is between the recessed portion and the MFS.

A method provides a magnetic transducer having a media-facing surface (MFS). The method includes providing a pole, providing a side gap, providing coil(s) for energizing the pole and providing side shield(s). A portion of the pole resides at the MFS. The side shield(s) have a gradient in a saturation magnetization such that the saturation magnetization increases in a yoke direction perpendicular to the MFS. The step of providing the side shield(s) further includes providing a nonmagnetic structure having a side surface parallel to the MFS and providing at least one side shield layer. A portion of the side shield layer(s) are on the side surface. The portion of the side shield layer(s) has the gradient in the saturation magnetization. At least part of the side shield being formed by the portion of the side shield layer(s).

Method for fabricating a magnetic writer having a gradient in saturation magnetization of the shields

A method and system provide a magnetic transducer. The transducer includes a main pole, a side gap, at least one coil, a side shield and at least one of a leading shield, a trailing shield and a return pole. The coil(s) are configured to energize the main pole. The side gap is between the main pole and the side shield. The main pole is between the leading shield and the trailing shield. The trailing shield is between the main pole and the return pole. The side shield is between the leading shield and the trailing shield. At least one of the leading shield, the trailing shield and the return pole have a gradient in saturation magnetization such that the saturation magnetization varies in a down track direction.

A method and system for fabricating a magnetic transducer are described. The magnetic transducer includes a pole and a nonmagnetic intermediate layer adjacent to the pole. The pole has a paddle and a pole tip including a plurality of sidewalls. The pole includes a first magnetic pole layer, at least one antiferromagnetic coupling (AFC) structure on the first magnetic pole layer, and a second magnetic pole layer on the AFC structure(s). At least a portion of the first magnetic pole layer resides on the sidewalls of the pole tip. The paddle has a paddle width in a track width direction. The pole tip has a pole tip width in a track width direction that is less than the paddle width.

Method and system for providing an antiferromagnetically coupled writer

A method provides a magnetic transducer having an air-bearing surface (ABS) location. An intermediate layer that includes a first sublayer in a side shield region and a second sublayer outside of the side shield region is provided. A trench is formed in the intermediate layer using multiple etches. A first etch removes part of the second sublayer, providing a first portion of the trench having a first sidewall angle. A second etch removes part of the first sublayer, providing a second portion of the trench having a second sidewall angle. The second sidewall angle is greater than the first sidewall angle. A main pole is provided in the trench and has a plurality of sidewalls. The sidewalls have the second sidewall angle in the second portion of the trench and at least one main pole sidewall angle corresponding to the first sidewall angle in the first portion of the trench.

Method for fabricating a magnetic writer using multiple etches of damascene materials

A method and system provide a magnetic transducer having an air-bearing surface (ABS) location. The method includes forming a trench in the intermediate layer using a plurality of etches. A first etch substantially provides a first portion of the trench having a first sidewall angle. The second etch substantially provides a second portion of the trench having a second sidewall angle. The second sidewall angle is greater than the first sidewall angle. The second portion of the trench includes the ABS location. The method also includes providing a main pole in the trench. The main pole has a plurality of sidewalls. The sidewalls having the first sidewall angle in the first portion of the trench and the second sidewall angle in the second portion of the trench.

Method for fabricating a magnetic writer using multiple etches

A method and system provide a magnetic transducer having an air-bearing surface (ABS) and an intermediate layer. A trench having a shape and location corresponding to a main pole is formed in the intermediate layer. The main pole is provided. At least a portion of the main pole is in the trench. Providing the main pole further includes vacuum depositing a first main pole material layer. The first main pole material layer is thin enough to preclude filling of the trench. The first main pole material layer is then ion beam etched. A second main pole layer is vacuum deposited on the first main pole layer. The second main pole material layer is also thin enough to preclude filling of the trench. An additional main pole layer is also deposited.
