A method for forming an emulsion polymer includes a step of forming a pre-emulsion by combining a monomer composition with a siloxane-containing composition in water and polymerizing the pre-emulsion by combining the pre-emulsion with a radical initiator in a reactor to form a reaction mixture. Characteristically, the monomer composition includes one or more monomers selected from the group consisting of (meth)acrylic acid monomers, (meth)acrylic monomers, styrene monomers, vinyl acetate monomers, vinyl ester monomers, and combinations thereof. A paint composition that includes the emulsion polymer is also provided. This invention describes a method to provide excellent burnish and mar resistance while avoiding problems with film appearance that can result from siloxane addition.

Characteristically, the photocatalyst includes a photocatalytic metal oxide having an average particle size from about 1 to about 50 nm. Advantageously, coatings formed from the composition have improved stain resistance, low contact angle, and resistance to dirt adherence, while maintaining a clear optical character.

A method for forming a pigmented aqueous slurry includes a step of combining a dispersant having pigment affinic groups with water to form an aqueous dispersant mixture. Pigment is added to the aqueous dispersant mixture to form an aqueous pigment mixture. The aqueous pigment composition is ground until the average particle size is less than 30 microns to form a pigmented aqueous slurry.

A paint composition for forming energy saving self-cleaning coatings includes water, a binder composition, a powder catalyst composition, a first pigment composition, a second pigment composition, and a fluoropolymer-composition. The binder composition includes a first acrylic resin having an average particle size from about 0.2 to 1 micron and a glass transition temperature less than about 10&#xb0; C. The powder catalyst composition includes anatase titanium dioxide with a surface area from about 50 to 500 m/g. It should be appreciated that anatase provides catalyst activity that is useful for providing the self-cleaning properties of the present embodiment. The first pigment composition includes rutile titanium dioxide which typically has low or no catalytic activity while the second pigment composition is different than the first pigment composition. Characteristically, the fluoropolymer-containing composition includes polyvinylidene fluoride and a second acrylic resin.

A method of manufacturing a hydrophobic antifouling coating material, including: (a) mixing a sol-gel precursor, water, an aqueous colloidal silica suspension, and a catalyst to perform a sol-gel reaction to form a solution having particles therein, wherein the sol-gel reaction is performed without addition of any organic solvent; (b) chemically modifying the particles with a hydrophobic agent to form surface-modified particles; and (c) adding a surfactant to the solution containing the surface-modified particles to form a hydrophobic antifouling coating material. The hydrophobic antifouling coating material can be dispersed in an aqueous solution, and has properties such as low VOC (Volatile organic compound) value, high solid content, and high stability.

A method of making a titanium oxide-containing coating composition comprises attaching an initiator to a pretreated titanium oxide to form an initiator/pretreated titanium oxide complex. The pretreated titanium oxide includes a plurality of pretreated titanium oxide particles which are titanium oxide particles that are pretreated with at least one metal oxide. The initiator/pretreated titanium oxide complex is contacted with a polymerizable unsaturated monomer such that a polymeric encapsulate forms on the initiator/pretreated titanium oxide particles to form polymeric encapsulated titanium oxide particles.

The present invention provides increased stain resistance, tannin blocking, adhesion, and various other properties. A composition in accordance with the principles of the present invention comprises at least three binders, nanoparticle pigment, and pigmentary titanium dioxide. In one embodiment, the present invention relates to a coating on a substrate wherein the coating has three binders, nanoparticle metal oxide pigment, and pigmentary titanium dioxide. Various additives may be included to formulate paint as known in the art.

A composition in accordance with the principles of the present invention comprises at least two binders, nanoparticle pigment, and pigmentary titanium dioxide. In one embodiment, the present invention relates to a coating on a substrate wherein the coating has two binders, nanoparticle metal oxide pigment, and pigmentary titanium dioxide. Various additives may be included to formulate paint as known in the art.

An improved pigment spacing composition and method of manufacture. A coating composition wherein the pigment particles are spaced more uniformly resulting in improved coating properties. In another embodiment, the present invention relates to a composition having nanoparticles interacting with pigmentary titanium dioxide to provide for more uniform spacing of the titanium dioxide.
