A time-multiplexed multiview backlight, display, and method of time-multiplexed multiview backlight operation provide one or both of enhanced spatial resolution and enhanced angular resolution using time-multiplexing. The time-multiplexed multiview backlight includes a light guide configured to guide light as time-multiplexed guided light having different directions during different time intervals and an array of multibeam elements configured to scatter the time-multiplexed guided light as directional light beams. A first set of multibeam elements is configured to selectively scatter out the time-multiplexed guided light having the first direction and a second set of multibeam elements of the multibeam element array is configured to selectively scatter out the time-multiplexed guided light having the second direction. The time-multiplexed multiview display further includes an array of light valves configured to modulate the directional light beams as view pixels of a multiview image having different views in the different view directions.

Diffractive backlight fabrication employs a diffraction grating to scatter light from a light guide and define a reflective island that is aligned with the diffraction grating. A method of fabricating a diffractive backlight includes providing the light guide having the diffraction grating, diffractively scattering guided light out of the light guide using the diffraction grating to selectively expose photoresist and provide an opening in the photoresist, and depositing a reflective material into the opening to form a reflective island that is aligned with the diffraction grating. A reflective diffraction grating element of the diffractive backlight includes the diffraction grating and reflective island.

Diffractive backlight fabrication method

A horizontal parallax multiview display employs a plurality of slanted multibeam columns to scatter out of a light guide a plurality of directional light beams having principal angular directions corresponding to different view directions of the horizontal parallax multiview display. The plurality of directional light beams is modulated using an array of light valves to provide a multiview image having horizontal parallax. Further, the horizontal parallax multiview display employs a light control film having a slanted light control axis aligned with slanted multibeam columns of the slanted multibeam column plurality. The light control film is configured to control a view angle of the multiview image in a direction orthogonal to the horizontal parallax. The slanted multibeam columns may provide the multiview displays with a balanced resolution.

A multiview backlight, multiview display, and method of multiview backlight operation include reflective multibeam elements configured to provide emitted light having directional light beams with directions corresponding to view directions of a multiview image. The multiview backlight includes a light guide configured to guide light and an array of the reflective multibeam elements. Each reflective multibeam element includes a plurality of reflective sub-elements and is configured to reflectively scatter out a portion of the guided light as the emitted light. The multiview display includes the multiview backlight and an array of light valves to modulate the directional light beams to provide the multiview image. Each reflective sub-element protrudes from a guiding surface of the light guide by a respective protrusion distance. At least some of the protrusion distances can vary as a function of distance along a length of the light guide.

A multiview display includes an array of light valves having rows of a repeating plurality of color sub-pixels and arranged as a plurality of multiview pixels configured to modulate directional light beams as color pixels of views of a multiview image. A first row of the repeating plurality of color sub-pixels is offset from a second row of the repeating plurality of color sub-pixels in a row direction by an integer multiple of a width of a color sub-pixel. The offset of the first and second rows is configured to provide corresponding color sub-pixels in adjacent multiview pixels having different colors to mitigate color fringing associated with the color pixel of the multiview image. The multiview display further includes a light control film configured to control a view angle of the multiview image.

A backlight scattering element, multiview display, and method of backlight scattering element operation employ a high-index light guide layer in conjunction with a light guide and diffraction grating to provide emitted light. The backlight scattering element includes a light guide that guides light as guided light and a high-index light guide layer optically connected to the light guide and configured to extend a thickness of the light guide. The backlight scattering element also includes a diffraction grating adjacent to the high-index light guide layer to diffractively scatter out a portion of the guided light as emitted light. The multiview display includes a light guide having a first layer and a second layer, a refractive index of the second layer being greater than a refractive index of the first layer. The multiview display may modulate diffractively scattered out directional light beams to provide a multiview image.

Fabricating a diffractive backlight employs a universal grating and selects a portion of the universal grating using a reflective island to define a grating element, a reflective diffraction grating element of the diffractive backlight including the grating element and the reflective island. A method of fabricating a diffractive backlight includes forming the universal grating, forming the reflective island, and selecting a portion of the universal grating using the reflective island to define the grating element. The method of fabricating a diffractive backlight may include forming the reflective island on a light guide surface and forming the universal grating over the reflective island. Alternatively, the method of fabricating a diffractive backlight may include forming the universal grating on the light guide surface and forming the reflective island over the universal grating.

A multiview backlight, multiview display, and method employ arrays of active emitters and a diffuser to provide an effective active emitter from emitted light from each active emitter. The multiview backlight includes an array of active emitters and a diffuser configured to provide effective active emitters having a predetermined size that is between one quarter and two times a size of a light valve of the multiview display. The multiview display includes an array of effective active emitters including active emitters and a diffuser configured to provide output emitted light. The multiview display further includes an array of light valves configured to modulate output emitted light to provide a displayed image. A spacing between effective active emitters is an integer multiple of a spacing between light valves of the multiview display.

A grating collimator and backlight system provide collimated light to illuminate a backlight. The grating collimator includes a light guide configured to guide light as guided light and a light-recycling light source configured to provide light to the light guide and to recycle light received from the light guide. The grating collimator further includes a diffraction grating coupler configured to diffractively redirect the provided light into the light guide as the guided light. The backlight system includes the grating collimator configured to provide collimated output light and the backlight configured to receive the collimated output light. The backlight may be multiview backlight.

A multiview backlight, multiview display, and method employ arrays of active emitters arranged in columns to provide directional light beams having directions corresponding to view directions of a multiview display. The multiview backlight includes a first array of active emitters arranged in columns and configured to provide a first plurality of directional light beams and a second array of active emitters arranged in columns and configured to provide a second plurality of directional light beams. Columns of the second active emitter array are disposed between and alternate with the columns of the first active emitter array. The multiview display further includes an array of light valves configured to modulate the directional light beams to display a multiview image. The view directions of the multiview display are in a plane that crosses the columns of first and second active emitter arrays.

A multiview backlight, multiview display, and method of multiview backlight operation include reflective multibeam elements configured to provide emitted light having directional light beams with directions corresponding to view directions of a multiview image. The multiview backlight includes a light guide configured to guide light and an array of the reflective multibeam elements, each reflective multibeam element including a plurality of reflective sub-elements and being configured to reflectively scatter out a portion of the guided light as the emitted light. The multiview display includes the multiview backlight and an array of light valves to modulate the directional light beams to provide the multiview image.

A collimated backlight and an electronic display employ a light guide having angle-preserving scattering feature and an absorption collimator. The angle-preserving scattering feature is configured to scatter a portion of guided light out of the light guide as emitted light. The absorption collimator includes an absorption element and is configured to convert light provided by a light source into collimated light to be guided as the guided light. The electronic display includes an array of light valves and may be configured as a multiview display or a privacy display.

The emitted light includes a plurality of directional light beams having different principal angular directions corresponding to respective different view directions of a multiview display. The color-tailored emission pattern corresponds to an arrangement of color sub-pixels of a view pixel in the multiview display.

A static multiview display includes a plurality of light emitters offset in a longitudinal direction; a light guide configured to guide light in the longitudinal direction; a collimating light coupler configured to receive light from the light emitters and coupling the light to the light guide; and an array of diffraction gratings to extract light guided by the light guide to provide a multiview image having a direction that is a function of both color and a propagation angle of light guided by the light guide.
