A wide field fundus camera is disclosed to implement multiple illumination beam projectors and to capture multiple retinal images at a various viewing angles to mimic wide field retinal examination with an indirect ophthalmoscope. The wide field fundus camera may incorporate a consumer image recording device with fast auto focusing so as to make the device quick to respond and easy to use. The wide field fundus camera may include narrow and broad slit beam illuminations to enhance autofocusing and imaging through less transparent crystalline lens and through haze due to Purkinje reflections from crystalline lens surfaces. Control of multiple illumination beam projectors in a programmable manner can be used to assess alignment of each illumination beam projector with the eye and to capture said multiple retinal images. Furthermore, a method is disclosed to montage said multiple retinal images into a single montage and to remove haze and reflections.

Wide field fundus camera

The present invention contemplates an infant eye model for wide field retinal imaging by implementing nominal physical parameters and optical characteristics found in scientific literature and by simulating retinal features and details found in real eye images. The present invention also contemplates implementing a corneal model with a translucent plastic to mimic image haze and 1Purkinje reflection. The present invention also contemplates implementing a birefringent layer to the lens posterior surface to simulate 4Purkinje reflection and its brightness variation. The present invention further contemplates implementing a photo-realistic retinal hemisphere shell to provide retinal details and demonstrate retinopathy associated with retinal diseases.

Eye model for wide field fundus imaging

A wide field fundus camera is disclosed to implement multiple illumination beam projectors and to capture multiple retinal images at various viewing angles to facilitate wide field retinal examination. The wide field fundus camera contemplates an ultra-wide field lens that can provide edge to edge imaging of the entire retina at a single alignment. The wide field fundus camera contemplates configuration of said multiple illumination beam projectors to provide visualization of retina and Purkinje reflections simultaneously to facilitate determination of proper camera alignment with the eye. The wide field fundus camera further contemplates control of multiple illumination beam projectors in a programmable manner to further assess alignment of each illumination beam projector with the eye and to capture said multiple retinal images. The wide field fundus camera further contemplates a consumer image recording device with fast auto focusing and fast continuous image capture to make the device easy to use and quick to respond. The wide field fundus camera further contemplates narrow and broad slit beam illuminations to enhance autofocusing, imaging through less transparent crystalline lens, and reduction of haze due to reflected and scattered light from camera and ocular surfaces other than the retina. The wide field camera contemplates a real-time algorithm to reduce said reflected and scattered light haze in said retinal images. The wide field camera further contemplates automated montage of said multiple retinal images into a single wide field FOV retinal montage and automated removal reflected and scattered light haze from said retinal montage. The wide field camera further contemplates to automatically identify camera alignment with the eye and standardize an alignment procedure to simplify reflected and scattered light haze to facilitate dehaze and auto montage of said retinal images.

Wide field fundus camera with auto-montage at a single alignment

A wide field fundus camera is disclosed to implement multiple illumination beam projectors and to capture multiple retinal images at various viewing angles to facilitate wide field retinal examination. The wide field fundus camera contemplates an ultra-wide field lens that can provide edge to edge imaging of the entire retina at a single alignment. It also contemplates configuration of said multiple illumination beam projectors to provide visualization of retina and Purkinje reflections simultaneously to facilitate determination of proper camera alignment with the eye. It further contemplates control of multiple illumination beam projectors in a programmable manner to capture said multiple retinal images. The present invention contemplates a refraction system to integrate the objective and subjective measurement into a single instrument. The present invention also contemplates a refraction system with open-field and binocular viewing to overcome instrument myopia and to mimic viewing experience of a phoropter. The present invention further contemplates a refraction system employing a pair of optical trombones to eliminate the need of flipping plurality sets of trial lenses for defocus power correction.

Method and apparatus for determining depth of focus of an eye optical system

The present invention contemplates a refraction system facilitating for contact lens fitting via measuring the patient's refraction on the corneal plane and via introducing a conjugated plane of the corneal plane for insertion of a contact lens simulator or phase plate. The present invention also contemplates a refraction system to integrate the objective and subjective measurement into a single instrument. The present invention further contemplates a refraction system with open-field and binocular viewing to overcome instrument myopia and to measure accommodation. The present invention also further contemplates a refraction system employing a pair of optical trombones to eliminate the need of flipping plurality sets of trial lenses for defocus corrections. The present invention even further contemplates a multiple vergence acuity chart to facilitate patient's judgment of best corrected visual acuity. The present invention is thus aimed to provide a refraction system that overcomes the identified issues with the commonly used auto-refractor and phoropter and that enables effective use of contact lens simulators or phase plates to facilitate fitting of multifocal contact lenses for presbyopia correction.

Refraction system for facilitating contact lens fitting

An optical path delay scanner, comprising a rotatable mount, a first prism and a second prism disposed on the mount, and a radiation source aligned to project light through the first prism and the second prism. The radiation source may be arranged to project the light on a surface of the first prism at an incidence angle corresponding to the prism's minimum deviation angle. The scanner may be disposed in a reference arm of a Michaelson interferometer.

Apparatus comprising an optical path delay scanner

An ophthalmic apparatus adapted to project a waist of a beam of the light, such that a portion of the confocal region of the waist is projected onto the cornea. The source can be at least partially coherent and/or monochromatic. The source may be a laser or a laser diode. The beam can be a Gaussian beam, or a non-Gaussian beam. The apparatus can comprise a wavefront aberrometer, an axial eye length measuring apparatus or a refractometer.

Eye illumination apparatus and method

The present invention discloses a high power diode-pumped laser for laser ablation of soft tissue. The present invention contemplates to operate the high power diode-pumped solid-state laser at a continuous Q-switching mode and at a big number of transverse modes. The present invention also contemplates to reduce beam divergence and beam spot size and thus to increase power density of the laser on target tissue to improve the speed of tissue ablation. The present invention further contemplates to minimize power consumption such that external water-cooling or secondary cooling loop can be eliminated. Apparatus and method for soft tissue ablation employing high power diode-pumped laser

A surgical system that ablates soft tissue. The system may include a fiber laser oscillator as the gain medium that emits electromagnetic radiation. The system may process the electromagnetic radiation, and direct the electromagnetic radiation on to the soft tissue to be ablated. Due at least in part to the nature of the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the fiber laser oscillator, the system may provide various enhancements, such as a higher power conversion efficiency, a longer lifetime, less heat dissipation, a more compact design, and/or other enhancements, for example. The system may also generate electromagnetic radiation with a relatively high beam quality. This may reduce beam divergence and beam spot size on targeted soft tissue, thereby enhancing power density in the electromagnetic radiation guided to the soft tissue. This enhanced power density may facilitate effective ablation.

Surgical system that ablates soft tissue

An optical system calibration system and method particularly suited for calibrating the optical slit planes in an ophthalmic diagnostic instrument. The system includes an illumination source projector, an illumination image receiver, and a calibration component all having known relative positions, orientations and physical and optical characteristics. The calibration component includes at least two separated, diffusely reflecting surfaces. Images of an exemplary slit illumination pattern projected onto the calibration component and formed on the diffusely reflecting surfaces are detected by the image receiver such as a video camera. Based upon camera image coordinates and triangulation parameters of the projector, the receiver, and the calibration component, the slit image positions on the image detector plane can be calibrated to the axially displaced, diffusely reflecting calibration component surface positions.
