A sensor having improved shelf life is provided for determining concentration of a biomarker in a liquid sample. The sensor functions by electrochemical detection and requires use of a biomolecule, e.g., an enzyme that catalyzes an electron transfer reaction specific for the biomarker. The sensor requires use of a quaternary ammonium compound as a bio-linker. It further requires crosslinking of the biomolecule for improved stability.

Durable enzyme-based biosensor and process for drop deposition immobilization

A glucose sensor suitable for measuring glucose levels in human saliva is provided. Systems containing the glucose sensor and methods for making and using the sensor are also provided. The glucose sensor is highly sensitive and can detect glucose levels at least down to 5 ppm. Fabrication of the sensor involves depositing single-walled carbon nanotubes onto the surface of a working electrode in a 3 electrode electrochemical detector and functionalizing the nanotubes by depositing layers of polymers, metallic nanoparticles, and glucose oxidase enzyme onto the nanotubes. The sensor can be used as a disposable, single-use device or as part of an analytical system, such as a microfluidics system, for the analysis of multiple analytes. The sensor enables the diagnosis and monitoring of diabetes to be performed without pain or the need for finger pricks in a home or clinical setting.

Saliva glucose monitoring system

Sensors based on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) are integrated into a microfluidic system outfitted with data processing and wireless transmission capability. The sensors combine the sensitivity, specificity, and miniature size of SWNT-based nanosensors with the flexible fluid handling power of microfluidic 'lab on a chip' analytical systems. Methods of integrating the SWNT-based sensor into a microfluidic system are compatible with the delicate nature of the SWNT sensor elements. The sensor devices are capable of continuously and autonomously monitoring and analyzing liquid samples in remote locations, and are applicable to real time water quality monitoring and monitoring of fluids in living systems and environments. The sensor devices and fabrication methods of the invention constitute a platform technology, because the devices can be designed to specifically detect a large number of distinct chemical agents based on the functionalization of the SWNT. The sensors can be combined into a multiplex format that detects desired combinations of chemical agents simultaneously.

Wireless SWNT sensor integrated with microfluidic system for various liquid sensing applications

A non-contact testing system and method using acoustic sensors and a mobile sensing system using this system and method is disclosed. The leaky surface wave is recorded with directional microphones. A fast inversion analysis algorithm is introduced to estimate the shear velocity profile and elastic modulus for the subsurface layers of pavement structures, using the dispersion curves obtained from the acoustic signals. An electrical hammer is used to produce impact impulses automatically. A mobile sensing system is integrated on a mobile cart to perform the mobile subsurface sensing for pavement structures.

Real-time pavement profile sensing system using air-coupled surface wave

The invention provides a compact, high-frequency, transmit and receive millimeter-wave radar sensor device, system, and method of use. The sensor can operate at a variety of distances, speeds, and resolutions depending on the hardware components selected in a given implementation. The hardware and software architecture is generic and can be tailored to required applications.

Conformal and configurable millimeter-wave integrated array radar in a compact package

An instantaneous/real-time wireless dynamic tire pressure sensor (DTPS) for characterizing pavement qualities and for detecting surface and subsurface pavement defects under normal driving conditions. Signal processing provides quantitative assessment of surface conditions. DTPS includes a vehicle tire valve stem-mounted pressure sensor and wheel hub-mounted signal conditioning, amplification, and transmitting circuitry. A signal processing computer within the vehicle is wirelessly coupled to the hub-mounted circuitry. Tire pressure changes caused by ground vibration excitation from the interaction between the tire and pavement at normal driving speeds are detected. When acoustic radiation from a surface wave is significantly stronger than acoustic noise, subsurface information can be extracted. An energy harvester based on strong magnetostatic coupling between a high permeability core solenoid, fixed proximate a vehicle wheel, and a bias magnet array, fixedly mounted in conjunction with a dust shield, can provide power the DIPS.
