A self-seeded optical parametric amplifier (OPA) system includes a cavity mirror, a wavelength conversion unit, and a dichroic filter. The cavity mirror is configured to allow high transmission for an input laser beam and high reflection for a feedback beam. The wavelength conversion unit is configured to convert the input laser beam into a signal laser beam and an idler laser beam. The dichroic filter is configured to allow one of the signal laser beam and the idler laser beam to pass through the dichroic filter and reflect the other one onto a feedback path.

Self-seeded OPA system

A cavity-enhanced frequency mixer includes an input optical fiber, a waveguide, and an output optical fiber. The waveguide has an input end and an output end, the input end is connected to the input optical fiber, and a surface of the input end of the waveguide is coated with a highly reflective coating. The output optical fiber is formed with a fiber Bragg grating structure. The highly reflective coating and the fiber Bragg grating structure form a pair of reflective surfaces for resonant optical parametric oscillation under a low threshold situation, so that one of the beams generated by the input beam is reflected inside the partially reflective surfaces. Operated above a pump power threshold, the cavity-enhanced frequency mixer is tantamount to a compact, low-power budget optical parametric oscillator, while below the pump power threshold, it is a bright, compact, single-mode and narrow linewidth single-photon source.

Cavity-enhanced frequency mixer for classical and quantum applications

A laser system and a laser outputting method are disclosed. The method comprises: providing a oscillator, wherein the oscillator comprises a pump light source, a cavity and a mode locked controller; utilizing the pump light source to emit a pump light into the cavity; outputting first laser pulses to the spectrum converter; utilizing a wavelength conversion chip of the spectrum converter to convert the first laser pulses to second laser pulses; utilizing at least one photo-detector to detect a power of the second laser pulses; controlling the mode locked controller to modulate a mode-locked status of the cavity when the power of the second laser pulses is lower than a threshold value.

Laser system and laser outputting method

A compact optical system is provided. The system includes a first optical module, a first substrate, a second optical module, and a second substrate. The first optical module is utilized to modulate a laser beam. The first substrate supports the first optical module, and the first substrate defines a first optical via such that the laser beam can pass through the first substrate through the first optical via. The second optical module receives the laser beam from the first optical via for modulating the laser beam. The second substrate is disposed parallel to the first substrate and away from the first substrate with a first predetermined distance and utilized to support the second optical module. An ultrafast laser thereof is further provided.

Compact optical and laser systems and ultrafast laser utilizing the same

A periodic poling structure comprises a ferroelectric substrate including a plurality of tunnels, a plurality of first domains positioned in the ferroelectric substrate between the tunnels and a plurality of second domains interleaved between the first domains in the ferroelectric substrate. Each first domain has a first polarization direction, and each second domain has a second polarization direction different from the first polarization direction. The tunnels are disposed on a top surface and on a bottom surface of the ferroelectric substrate in an equal interval manner or in a variant interval manner. Particularly, the second polarization direction is opposite to the first polarization direction. The periodic poling structure further comprises a plurality of conductive blocks covering the entire base surfaces of the tunnels, or separated from the sidewalls of the tunnels by insulation gaps such that the conductive blocks cover only a portion of the base surfaces of the tunnels.

Periodic poling structure and electrode element and method for preparing the same

A wavelength converter structure according to one aspect of the present invention comprises a ferroelectric substrate, a ridge positioned on the ferroelectric substrate, a plurality of first domains positioned in the ridge and a plurality of second domains interleaved between the first domains in the ridge. The first domains have a first polarization direction and the second domains have a second polarization direction opposite to the first polarization direction. The refraction index of the ferroelectric substrate is different from the refraction index of the ridge. The ridge may include a rectangular portion, a taper portion, or a taper portion and a rectangular portion connected to the taper portion.

Wavelength converter structure and method for preparing the same

An optical frequency mixer according to one embodiment of the present invention comprises a V-shaped resonant cavity including a first reflective surface, a second reflective surface and an output coupler, a pumping unit configured to emit a pumping wave to the laser gain medium to generate a resonating wave in the resonant cavity, a nonlinear crystal positioned on an optical path of the resonating wave in the resonant cavity, and an input interface configured to emit a mixing wave into the resonant cavity. Preferably, the output coupler can be a plano-concave lens having a concave surface configured to reflect the resonating wave and to focus the resonating wave such that the spot size of the resonating wave is matched the spot size of the pumping wave. Particularly, the nonlinear crystal is positioned between the output coupler and the input interface.

Optical frequency mixer and method for the same

A method is provided for forming a waveguide region within a periodically domain reversed ferroelectric crystal wherein the waveguide region has a refractive index profile that is vertically and horizontally symmetric. The symmetric profile produces effective overlapping between quasi-phasematched waves, a corresponding high rate of energy transfer between the waves and a symmetric cross-section of the radiated wave. The symmetric refractive index profile is produced by a method that combines the use of a diluted proton exchange medium at a high temperature which produces a region of high index relatively deeply beneath the crystal surface, followed by a reversed proton exchange which restores the original crystal index of refraction immediately beneath the crystal surface.

High efficiency wavelength converters

A method for forming uniform, sharply defined periodic regions of reversed polarization within a unidirectionally polarized ferroelectric material proceeds as a two-step process. First, alignment keys are formed on upper and lower planar surfaces of a unidirectionally polarized ferroelectric material by producing a spaced pair of alignment key shaped domain reversed regions and etching alignment key shaped notches in the upper and lower surfaces where the domain reversed regions intersect the surface planes. These notches, being vertically aligned between the upper and lower surfaces, are then used to align photomasks over a surface coating of photoresist formed directly on the material surface or on SiOlayers coating the material surface. The photoresist is then patterned and may also be thermally hardened to form a plurality of regularly spaced open strips, through which conducting metal contacts or ion-exchanged regions may be formed or contacts to the ferroelectric surface can be directly made by liquid conductors to produce the desired polarization reversals by application of an electric field at different temperatures of the material.

Domain reversal control method for ferroelectric materials

A multi-channel optical frequency mixer for all-optical signal processing and a method for engineering the same. The multi-channel mixer uses a nonlinear optical material exhibiting an effective nonlinearity dwhose spatial distribution is defined by a quasi-phase-matching grating, e.g., a QPM grating. The spatial distribution is defined such that its Fourier transform to the spatial frequency domain defines at least two wavelength channels which are quasi-phase-matched for performing optical frequency mixing. The wavelength channels correspond to dominant Fourier components and the Fourier transform is appropriately adjusted using grating parameters such as grating periods, phase reversal sequences and duty cycles to include an odd or even number of dominant Fourier components. The multi-channel mixer can perform frequency mixing operations such as second harmonic generation (SHG), difference frequency generation (DFG), sum frequency generation (SFG), and parametric amplification.

Multiple channel optical frequency mixers for all-optical signal processing

A method of patterning and fabricating poled dielectric microstructures in dielectric materials comprising the following steps. A poled dielectric microstructure within a dielectric material is provided. The poled dielectric microstructure is then segmented into a plurality of independent sub-structures. The poled dielectric microstructures are then fabricated within each of the plurality of independent sub-structures. Additional processes and a novel poling setup for improving and implementing this patterning and fabrication method are also disclosed.

Method of patterning and fabricating poled dielectric microstructures within dielectric materials

A compensated nonlinear optical frequency mixer for compensating the walk-off produced by group velocity mismatch (GVM) between interaction waves. The compensated mixer has a first mixing region in which the interaction waves participate in a non-linear optical mixing process and where walk-off occurs between the interaction waves due to GVM. The compensated mixer is equipped with a frequency selective coupling and time delay structure located after the first mixing region for eliminating the walk-off produced between the interaction waves in the first mixing region by guiding the waves in arms whose lengths differ by a re-synchronization length. A second mixing region is located after the frequency-selective coupling and time delay structure, such that when the waves emerge in phase from the frequency selective coupling and time delay structure they continue to interact efficiently in the second mixing region. The compensated nonlinear optical frequency mixer of the invention can by used to compensate for GVM in frequency mixing operations involving a material's &khgr; susceptibility.
