A method for loading single head in a hard disk drive includes the following steps: mounting a head assembly () in a baseplate () of a hard disk drive, the head assembly comprising an actuator arm (), a suspension () and a HGA, the baseplate engaging a motor () and the HGA is positioned close to the motor; biasing the suspension by a mounting tool () from the original position, the mounting tool comprising a cantilever arm (), a pressing head () and a supporting rod (), wherein, the mounting tool rotates to the suspension and gets down to press the suspension; mounting a disk () on the motor in the baseplate; and releasing the pressing head from the suspension, loading the HGA of the head assembly to a parking zone of the disk.

A packaging arrangement for smoothly and conveniently providing small hardware items to an assembly line operator is described. The items are fastened onto a flexible band, lined up in the order in which they are to be installed on an article being assembled. The band is divided into equal segments defined by index marks, each segment containing the hardware items required for the assembly of one article. The items are fastened to the band off-line using securing features fashioned from the band itself in a manner and orientation by which each item can be plucked from the band with a tool that can grasp the item, pull it off the band, transport it to the article being assembled, and install it on the article without intermediate disengagement from the tool. The utilization of the band improves the productivity and reliability of manually assembled articles such as disk drives.

The rotor includes a spindle shaft (), a hub (), and a drive member (). The shaft is fixed in the bearings, and the hub is fixed to a top end of the shaft. The drive member is fixed to a bottom end of the shaft, at a side of the baseplate opposite from the hub. The cover is fixed to a bottom of the baseplate, surrounding the drive member. The cover helps prevent contaminants such as dust from entering a clean chamber of the data storage device that surrounds the shaft.

A data storage device () includes a housing enclosing a clean room chamber (CR), a stator (), a rotor (), and a plurality of data storage disks (). The housing includes an upper partition () and a lower partition (). The stator includes a plurality of stator laminations () each having a winding () wound therearound, and a shaft () having opposite ends fixed with the upper partition and the lower partition. The rotor includes a hub (), a tube () fixed in the hub, and a magnet () surrounded by the stator laminations. The hub includes a radially extending shoulder () for supporting the disks thereon. The tube surrounds the shaft, with a pair of bearings () rotatably connecting the tube to the shaft. A clamp () is secured on the hub, and presses on a top one of the disks to mount the disks to the hub.

A data storage device () includes a stator (), a rotor (), a disk (), and a clamp () attaching the disk to the rotor. The rotor includes a hub () forming a shoulder () at a top portion thereof. A recess () is defined in the top portion of the hub and surrounded by the shoulder. An outer diameter of the recess is equal to or larger than a diameter of a central opening () of the disk. The disk is seated on the shoulder of the hub. The clamp includes a bottom fixing part () fixedly attached to the hub in the recess, a cylindrical wall () abutting an inside of the shoulder and the disk in the central opening, and a pressing part () extending through the central opening of the disk and pressing on the disk thereby ensuring that the disk can rotate with the rotor.

A disc drive including a dual disc clamp for clamping a number of hard discs within a disc drive is disclosed. The clamp is comprised of a top circular clamp member in contact with a bottom circular clamp member, with the clamp members having the same physical shape and area. The bottom clamp member has number of holes formed therein which reduce the disc distortion. The top clamp member has a concave upper surface, while the bottom clamp member has a convex upper surface. The clamp holds the discs in place through pressure provided by a plurality of screws which are passed through holes in the clamp members. The disc drive also includes a spindle motor to which the dual disc clamp is connected. The spindle motor provides a greater torque constant, thereby allowing lower start and run current.

Dual member disc clamp for uniform clamping load distribution

A latching mechanism for a disc drive actuator that makes use of a constant force to hold the latch in an unlatched position while the disc drive is in operational mode. The latching mechanism uses the power of the actuator to move the latching mechanism into a latched position under program control or upon the detection of a power loss. While in the latched position, the configuration of the latching mechanism components combined with the frictional contact between heads and discs serves to overcome the constant force and maintain the actuator in its park position, even in the presence of applied mechanical shock, until power is restored to the disc drive. Unlatching of the latching mechanism is accomplished by bringing the spindle motor up to a speed at which the heads begin to fly, eliminating the friction between the heads and discs and allowing the constant force to move the latching mechanism to it unlocked position. The latch mechanism includes features which move the actuator from its park position as the latching mechanism is disengaged. Various mechanisms for providing the constant force to the latch body are disclosed.

Actuator latch activated by head gram load for hard disc drives

A disc clamp formed in a circular shape from planar material. The disc clamp includes a central mounting portion having screw holes through which screws are inserted and fastened to matching tapped holes in the hub of the spindle motor. A circular corrugation is formed closely adjacent the outer diameter of the clamp forming a circular contact surface facing in the direction of the uppermost disc in a vertical stack of discs. A stiffening bend is formed at a radius lying between the central mounting portion and the circular corrugation to distribute the clamping force evenly between adjacent pairs of the screws. In a second aspect of the invention, the central mounting portion of the clamp includes a central opening and that part of the central mounting portion between the central opening and the stiffening bend is formed out-of-plane in the direction of the discs so that the central mounting portion will be substantially flattened onto the top of the hub of the spindle motor when the screws are tightened.
