The present application relates to methods and compositions and methods for treating viral infections, especially those caused by SARS-CoV-2. Compositions and methods for reducing the growth of and/or preventing the formation of a microbial biofilm are disclosed. The composition comprises an antimicrobial SMR peptide comprising an HIV-1 SMRwt peptide and a cell penetrating peptide (CPP) domain.
