A magnetic disk apparatus includes a magnetic disk, a magnetic head, a servo reproduction signal generator and a magnetic head controller. The disk includes a data recording area and a servo-pattern area. The data recording area includes a non-magnetic area scattered with magnetic regions, and the servo-pattern area includes uniformly magnetized magnetic regions larger than the magnetic regions in the recording area. The magnetic head reciprocates radially of the disk, giving a magnetization direction to the magnetic regions in the data recording area and reading the magnetization direction of the magnetic regions in the data recording area and the servo-pattern area. The servo reproduction signal generator reads the servo-pattern area, using the magnetic head, via an absolute-value calculation circuit to generate a servo reproduction signal before the recording or reading with respect to the data recording area. The magnetic head controller performs recording or reproducing with respect to the data recording area by controlling the magnetic head based on the servo reproduction signal.

Magnetic disk apparatus and magnetic disk access controlling method

A magnetic disk apparatus includes a magnetic disk, a magnetic head, a reverse-pulse detector, and a re-magnetizer. The magnetic disk includes a data recording area and a servo-pattern area. The magnetic regions of the servo-pattern area have been pre-magnetized in the same direction or pre-magnetizing direction. The magnetic head is arranged to reciprocate radially of the magnetic disk. The reverse-pulse detector is provided for reading the servo-pattern area with the magnetic head before data recording or reproducing with respect to the data recording area is performed. The reverse-pulse detector detects, from servo reproduction signal pulses, reverse pulses corresponding to the reversal of magnetization direction relative to the pre-magnetizing direction. The re-magnetizer causes the magnetic head to perform the re-magnetizing of the magnetic regions in the servo-pattern area when the count of reverse pulses is not smaller than a threshold number.

A storage medium library retains polygonal data storage plates. The library includes a box for accommodating the plates, a drive unit for recording or retrieving data with respect to each storage plate, and a plate changer for transferring the storage plates between the changer and the drive unit. Each storage plate includes a recording section and a handling section surrounding the recording section. The handling section is formed with engagement recesses. The accommodation box is internally provided with support ledges which the handling sections of the storage plates contact. The plate changer includes two extendable arms for supporting the storage plates. A magneto-optical disk having recording tracks are formed along concentric grooves or a spiral groove. A non-groove region where no grooves are made is provided in a middle part of each recording track. In the non-groove region, there is formed a pit pattern representing information about the recording track. A track-counting U-groove is formed in the non-groove region, for detecting that the light spot of a reading laser beam has moved across the recording track. With the disk thus structured, it is possible to record information at high density and to access a desired recording track at high speed.

In a rewritable optical recording medium, a recording surface is divided into a plurality of zones by setting pitch intervals in the radial direction to be constant and a data area and a spare area for a defective sector are allocated in each zone. As for a capacity of the spare area in each zone, a predetermined total capacity of spare areas is allocated so that a spare ratio K&equals;D /D of a capacity D of the spare areas for a capacity D of the data areas becomes almost the same in the zones.
