In one embodiment, a method includes forming a structure having a first region including a ceramic material, a second region including a plurality of particles disposed in a ceramic matrix material, and a magnetic head assembly disposed in the first region. The method also includes directing a first ion beam at a side of the first and second regions of the structure, the first ion beam including an oxidizing species to oxidize one or more portions of the particles located near the side of the second region, where the one or more oxidized portions of the particles protrude from the side of the ceramic matrix material of the second region. The method further includes directing a second ion beam at the side of the first and second regions of the structure, the second ion beam including an inert species to recess the first and second regions.

Surface treatment of magnetic recording heads for improving the robustness thereof

Embodiments disclosed herein generally relate to a magnetic device. The magnetic head of the magnetic device includes structure for protecting the media facing surface (MFS). The protective structure, which may be referred to as an air bearing surface overcoat (ABSOC) structure, includes an aluminum containing compound that is disposed on the slider and head. The ABSOC also includes a silicon containing compound and a carbon layer disposed thereover.

In one embodiment, a magnetic head includes at least one magnetic head element for reading from and/or writing to a magnetic medium, the element having an air bearing surface (ABS) facing toward a magnetic medium, an adhesive film including silicon nitride above the ABS having a characteristic of being formed under a water vapor partial pressure, and a protective film above the adhesive film, the protective film including carbon. Also, in another embodiment, a method includes forming an ABS of a magnetic head, the ABS being a surface of the magnetic head which is closest to a magnetic medium when in use, forming an adhesive film above the ABS of the magnetic head, the adhesive film being formed under a water vapor partial pressure, and forming a protective film above the adhesive film, the protective film including carbon.

Air bearing surface overcoat with soft intermediate film, and methods of producing the same

A magnetic head suitable for high-density recording is provided at a high yield by a method that suppresses a reduction in reproducing output signal due to ion-beam irradiation. After an air-bearing surface of a read element, a magnetic-head element, or a row bar is mechanically polished, the air-bearing surface is irradiated with an ion beam, such that an orthographic projection of an ion-beam incidence direction onto the air-bearing surface forms an in-plane incidence angle of 30 degrees to 150 degrees or of 210 degrees to 330 degrees with respect to a track-width direction. Thereby, the formation of a short circuit due to ion-beam irradiation may be hindered.

Method of manufacturing a magnetic head

Embodiments of the invention provide a perpendicular magnetic recording medium improved for fly ability, high in read signal quality, and capable of suppressing magnetic decay of recorded magnetization to be caused by stray fields. In one embodiment, a perpendicular recording layer is formed over a substrate with a soft magnetic underlayer therebetween, then an amorphous or nano-crystalline layer is formed between the substrate and the soft magnetic underlayer. The soft magnetic underlayer includes first and second amorphous soft magnetic layers, as well as a nonmagnetic layer formed between those first and second amorphous soft magnetic layers. The first and second amorphous soft magnetic layers are given uniaxial anisotropy in the radial direction of the substrate respectively and coupled with each other antiferromagnetically.

Perpendicular magnetic recording medium, manufacturing process of the same, and magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus using the same

Disclosed are a perpendicular magnetic recording medium with lower medium noise, insusceptible to thermal fluctuation and high recording resolution and a method of manufacturing it. As the step of forming a metal layer at the time of forming a recording layer on a non-magnetic substrate via a plurality of underlayers and the step of forming an oxide layer with an average thickness of 0.2 nm or less are repeated, the crystal grains are magnetically isolated without disturbing the orientation of the crystal grain of the recording layer of the perpendicular magnetic recording medium or without degrading the magnetic characteristic of the crystal grain of the recording layer.
