A method and system for providing a magnetic transducer is described. The method and system include providing a magnetic shield, an insertion layer on the magnetic shield, an antiferromagnetic (AFM) layer, a pinned layer magnetically coupled with the AFM layer, a nonmagnetic spacer layer, and a free layer. The magnetic shield has a texture and a grain size. The insertion layer has a thickness that is sufficiently large that the AFM layer is magnetically decoupled from the magnetic shield and sufficiently small that the AFM layer is structurally coupled with the magnetic shield. The pinned layer resides between the AFM layer and the nonmagnetic spacer layer. The nonmagnetic spacer layer resides between the free layer and the pinned layer.

Method and system for providing an improved sensor stack for a recording head

A magnetic sensor is disclosed that is disposed between top and bottom magnetic shield layers, the sensor comprising: a nonferromagnetic layer disposed beneath the top shield layer; a magnetically soft layer disposed beneath the nonferromagnetic layer, the magnetically soft layer having a magnetization that rotates in response to an applied magnetic field; a ferromagnetic pinned layer disposed beneath the magnetically soft layer; an antiferromagnetic layer disposed beneath the ferromagnetic layer; and an aluminum-nitride seed layer disposed between the antiferromagnetic layer and the bottom shield layer. The aluminum-nitride seed layer decreases sense current shunting, increases pinning strength, increases magnetoresistance and/or increases yield.

A method and system for providing a magnetoresistive sensor and a read head that includes the magnetoresistive sensor is disclosed. The method and system include providing a pinned layer, a nonmagnetic spacer layer and a composite sensor layer. The pinned layer has a first magnetization that is pinned in a particular direction. The nonmagnetic spacer layer resides between the composite sensor layer and the pinned layer. The composite sensor layer includes a CoFe layer and a composite layer adjacent to the CoFe layer. The composite layer includes CoFe and at least one of Ta, Hf, Ti, Nb, Zr, Au, Ag, Cu, B, C, O, Hand N.
