A method of operating a cooling system of a vehicle includes measuring a refrigerant pressure and a refrigerant temperature of a flow of refrigerant in a refrigerant circuit of the cooling system, estimating a relative humidity of a supply airflow across an evaporator of the refrigerant circuit utilizing the measured refrigerant pressure and the measured refrigerant temperature, and changing operation of one or more components of the refrigerant circuit as a result of the estimated relative humidity.

A system includes a compressor outlet temperature module, a refrigerant quality module, and a correction factor module. The compressor outlet temperature module is configured to estimate a temperature at an outlet of a compressor in a thermal system of an electric vehicle. The refrigerant quality module is configured to estimate a quality of refrigerant at an inlet of the compressor based on an enthalpy at the compressor inlet and an inlet enthalpy correction factor. The refrigerant quality is a ratio of vapor refrigerant mass to total refrigerant mass. The correction factor module is configured to determine the inlet enthalpy correction factor based on the estimated compressor outlet temperature and a temperature measured at the compressor outlet.

An exemplary method for operating a refrigeration cycle includes flowing a refrigerant through a metering device and calculating a pressure differential of the refrigerant across the metering device. A sensor is disposed to monitor an input parameter state of the thermal system. An actuator is configured to vary a flow in the fluid conduits. A controller is configured to receive a signal representative of the input parameter state; process an actuator state through a flow model of the thermal system to obtain an existing flow in the fluid conduits; process the existing flow through a thermal model of the thermal system to determine an input that reduces an error between a desired parameter state and the input parameter state; process the input through an inverse flow model to convert the input to a desired actuator state; and position the actuator in the desired actuator state.

Systems and methods are provided for determining a temperature of a thermal system that includes fluid conduits. A sensor monitors a current state of the temperature. A controller receives a signal from the sensor that is representative of the current state; determines a flow in the fluid conduits; determines a noise covariance of the thermal system; processes a thermal model of the thermal system; predicts a next-step state of the parameter at a time after the current state; and corrects the next-step state based, at least in-part, on the noise covariance resulting in a corrected next-step state.

An automotive vehicle includes an internal combustion engine that combusts an air/fuel mixture thereby generating exhaust gas containing particulate matter, and an exhaust after-treatment component that collects the particulate matter. A regeneration system burns off the collected particulate matter thereby regenerating the exhaust after-treatment component. A controller obtains a model of the combustion that is based on a kinetic controlled combustion phase and a mixing controlled combustion phase, and determines a point on the model with respect to current engine conditions that indicates an amount of the particulate matter in the exhaust gas.

The control module is configured to determine an amount of the reductant that is parasitically oxidized based on the NOconcentration signal and the temperature signal, and to determine a correction factor based on the amount of parasitically oxidized reductant to modify the reductant storage model.

Method for diagnosing and controlling ammonia oxidation in selective catalytic reduction devices

An exhaust aftertreatment system including a selective catalytic reduction device (SCR), a NOx sensor and a reductant injection system is described. A method for controlling the reductant injection system to inject reductant into the exhaust gas feedstream upstream relative to the SCR includes monitoring engine operation, and determining an initial reductant dosing rate responsive to the engine operation. A dosing perturbation is induced in the reductant dosing rate. The exhaust gas feedstream is monitored via the NOx sensor, and a reductant dosing correction term is determined based upon the monitoring. A final dosing rate for controlling the reductant injection system is determined based upon the initial reductant dosing rate, the dosing perturbation, and the reductant dosing correction term.

Method and apparatus for controlling reductant injection into an exhaust gas feedstream of an internal combustion engine

A system includes a target generating module, a model predictive control (MPC) module, and an actuator module. The target generating module generates a target value for an actuator of an engine. The MPC module generates a set of possible adjustments to the target value and predicts an operating parameter for the set of possible adjustments. The predicted operating parameter includes an emission level and/or an operating parameter of an exhaust system. The MPC module determines a cost for the set of possible adjustments and selects the set of possible adjustments from multiple sets of possible adjustments based on the cost. The MPC module determines whether the predicted operating parameter for the selected set satisfies a constraint and adjusts the target value using the possible adjustments of the selected set when the predicted operating parameter satisfies the constraint. The actuator module controls the actuator based on the target value as adjusted.

System and method for adjusting target actuator values of an engine using model predictive control to satisfy emissions and drivability targets and maximize fuel efficiency

A system according to the present disclosure includes a model predictive control (MPC) module and an actuator module. The MPC module generates a set of possible target values for an actuator of an engine and predicts an operating parameter for the set of possible target values. The predicted operating parameter includes an emission level and/or an operating parameter of an exhaust system. The MPC module determines a cost for the set of possible target values and selects the set of possible target values from multiple sets of possible target values based on the cost. The MPC module determines whether the predicted operating parameter for the selected set satisfies a constraint and sets target values to the possible target values of the selected set when the predicted operating parameter satisfies the constraint. The actuator module controls an actuator of an engine based on at least one of the target values.

System and method for determining target actuator values of an engine using model predictive control while satisfying emissions and drivability targets and maximizing fuel efficiency

A system is provided and includes a fuel module that, based on a crankshaft angle of an engine, generates a value indicative of an amount of fuel burned in a cylinder or a change in the amount of fuel burned. A heat release module, based on the value, determines an amount of heat released during a combustion event of the cylinder. A pressure module, based on the amount of heat released, estimates a pressure in the cylinder. A temperature module, based on the pressure, estimates a temperature in the cylinder. A concentration module, based on the pressure or the temperature, estimates nitrogen oxide concentration levels in the cylinder. An output module, based on the nitrogen oxide concentration levels, estimates an amount of nitrogen oxides. A control module, based on the amount of nitrogen oxides out of the cylinder, controls operation of the engine or an exhaust system.
