A vehicle is described that includes a multi-mode powertrain system having a first drive unit and a second drive unit. A controller is arranged to monitor the high-voltage DC power bus and is in communication with and operatively connected to first and second inverters. The controller is able to detect operation of one of the first inverter or the second inverter in an uncontrolled generating (UCG) mode, determine a driveline torque associated with the operating of the one of the first inverter or the second inverter in the UCG mode, and determine a compensating torque that is needed to counteract the driveline torque associated with the operating of the one of the first inverter or the second inverter in the UCG mode. The controller can further operate to detect a fault that may induce unintended lateral motion (ULM), and control torque outputs of the inverters based thereon.

Method and apparatus for controlling a multi-mode powertrain system of a vehicle

An electric vehicle drive system includes an electric motor, first and second planetary gear sets, including sun gear, carrier and ring gear members, first and second output shafts, and a housing. The members of the first planetary gear set are connected with the electric motor, the first output shaft, and a member of the second planetary gear set. The members of the second planetary gear set are connected with the first planetary gear set, the housing, and the second output shaft. The first planetary gear set provides differential reduction and the second planetary gear set provides reversal and reduction. Optional clutches can provide the function of a limited slip differential and distribute torque preferentially to one output shaft or the other.

Electric vehicle drive using combined differential and reduction gearing

An electric motor damping module includes an electric motor, a motor damper continuously interconnected with the electric motor, and an input member continuously interconnected with the motor damper. A transmission includes these elements, plus an output member, first, second, and third planetary gear sets each having first, second and third members, a first interconnecting member continuously interconnecting the third member of the first planetary gear set with the second member of the second planetary gear set, a second interconnecting member continuously interconnecting the second member of the first planetary gear set and the output member with the third member of the third planetary gear set, and a third interconnecting member continuously interconnecting the third member of the second planetary gear set with the second member of the third planetary gear set. The transmission also includes six torque transmitting mechanisms and a hydraulic pump. A sealing assembly is also provided.

Hybrid transmission arrangement having a motor damper

A method for controlling a powertrain system includes deactivating a motor disconnect clutch during vehicle operation. Motor speed is decreased to a first inactive speed threshold and an inverter circuit is controlled to an inactive state while monitoring the motor speed. The inverter circuit is deactivated, and when the motor speed decreases to a second inactive speed threshold, the inverter circuit is pulse-activated to operate the electric machine to increase motor speed to the first inactive speed threshold, and then deactivated. The inverter circuit is activated to increase the motor speed to synchronize with speed of the driveline prior to activating the motor disconnect clutch.

Method and apparatus for controlling an electrified powertrain system of a vehicle

A vehicle includes an electric motor, a direct current power source, and an inverter operatively connected to the direct current power source and the electric motor. The inverter is configured to convert direct current from the power source to alternating current and to transmit the alternating current to the electric motor. The inverter is characterized by an on status and an off status. A controller is operatively connected to the inverter and is configured to control whether the inverter is on or off. The controller is configured to selectively cause the inverter to enter a mode of operation in which the inverter cycles between being on and off.

Electric vehicle and method

A method for controlling a hybrid powertrain includes the following steps: (a) receiving, via a control module, a torque request; (b) commanding, via the control module, the first clutch of an automatic transmission to shift to a disengaged position in response to the torque request; (c) commanding, via the control module, an electric motor-generator to transmit torque to an internal combustion engine until a speed of a second clutch is substantially synchronized with a speed of the internal combustion engine; and (d) commanding, via the control module, the second clutch to shift to the engaged position after the speed of the second clutch is substantially synchronized with the speed of the internal combustion engine. The automatic transmission shifts a transmission speed ratio from an initial speed ratio to a subsequent speed ratio when the second clutch is in the engaged position.

Hybrid powertrain and method for controlling the same

A system and method of managing power in a hybrid vehicle are provided. The system includes an engine, first and second electronic power components, a power storage device, and a controller. The power storage device is configured to supply a power output to the second electronic power component necessary for the second electronic power component to drive a second set of drive wheels, in an electronic all-wheel drive mode. In steep grade environments, the power storage device is depleted at a higher rate, and may require a power input in addition to the power input of a conventional charge to adequately supply the second electronic power component with adequate power. To provide this power, the controller executes a series of control steps to increase a power output of the first electronic power component, by increasing the speed of the engine, thereby providing continuous power to the power storage device.

System and method of power management for a hybrid vehicle

A vehicle includes a first axle, a second axle, an engine having a crankshaft, a transmission having an input member that is operatively connected to the crankshaft and an output member that is operatively connected to the first axle, a first motor having a first rotor operatively connected to the crankshaft, a second motor having a second rotor that is operatively connected to the second axle, and a controller being operatively connected to the engine, the first motor, and the second motor. The controller is configured to selectively cause the engine to enter a deceleration fuel cut off mode, cause the transmission input torque to increase to zero, cause the torque of the second motor to decrease as the transmission input torque increases such that the sum of the first axle torque and the second axle torque remains substantially constant as the transmission input torque increases to zero.

Engine autostop control system and method for hybrid powertrain

A hybrid vehicle includes an electric motor with a rotatable rotor. A centrifugally-actuated clutch has a first rotatable member, a second rotatable member, and at least one actuator member attached to the first rotatable member. One of the first rotatable member and the second rotatable member is operatively connected to the wheels. The other of the first rotatable member and the second rotatable member is operatively connected to the rotor. The actuator member is configured to transfer torque between the first rotatable member and the second rotatable member by an amount that decreases due to centrifugal force acting on the actuator member as a rotational speed of the first rotatable member increases. A method of control is also provided.

Hybrid powertrain with centrifugally-actuated motor disconnect clutch and method of control

A hybrid transmission includes a transmission having a selectable clutch device effective when engaged to mechanically couple an internal combustion engine to a first axle at a fixed engine speed to axle speed ratio. A method for starting the engine includes executing an engine start event including spinning and fueling the engine such that an engine speed to axle speed ratio exceeds the fixed engine speed to axle speed ratio, and engaging said selectable clutch device after the engine speed to axle speed ratio exceeds the fixed engine speed to axle speed ratio.

Method to reduce lash clunk in a hybrid electric vehicle

A hybrid vehicle has a powertrain that includes a transmission with a planetary gear set that has a first, a second, and a third member. An engine is connected for unitary rotation with the first member. A first final drive is operatively connectable with the carrier member and connected with the first axle. A first motor-generator is connected for unitary rotation with the third member. A second motor-generator is operatively connected for proportional rotation with one of the axles. A first clutch is selectively engageable to connect any two of the members for unitary rotation with one another. The planetary gear set provides an underdrive ratio of speed of the second member to speed of the engine when the sun gear member is stationary.

Hybrid vehicle with power-split and parallel hybrid transmission and method of controlling same

A transmission includes an input member, an output member, and a stationary member. First and second planetary gearsets each have respective first, second, and third members. A first motor/generator has a first rotor operatively connected to one of the members of the planetary gearsets for unitary rotation therewith. A second motor/generator has a second rotor operatively connected to one of the members of the planetary gearsets for unitary rotation therewith. The transmission also includes first, second, and third torque transmitting devices operative to selectively connect members of the planetary gearsets with the input member, the stationary member, or with other members of the planetary gearsets to provide two electric vehicle modes, two electrically variable modes, and a fixed gear ratio mode of transmission operation.

Hybrid transmission

A powertrain includes an engine having a crankshaft, a transmission having an input member, and a damper operatively interconnecting the input member and the crankshaft to transmit torque from the crankshaft to the input member. An electric motor/generator is operatively connected to the transmission input member to selectively transmit torque thereto. A damper bypass system is operatively connected to the crankshaft and the input member. The damper bypass system is configured not to transfer torque from the crankshaft to the input member, but transmits torque from the input member to the crankshaft in response to input member torque exceeding crankshaft torque.

Engine damper bypass for hybrid powertrains

A control strategy for launching a motor vehicle includes using an electric motor to provide high torque at low speeds during synchronization of launch clutches. An internal combustion engine is started and connected with the electric motor to provide additional torque capacity. Selective engagement and disengagement of an engine disconnect clutch prevents the engine start from interfering with the motor vehicle launch.
