Embodiments relate to a display device including pixels that compensate a threshold voltage of a driving transistor, the pixels arranged in a plurality of rows. The gate of the driving transistor of each pixel is coupled to a pixel data switch and a reference voltage switch, configured to selectively provide pixel data provided via a data line and a reference voltage provided via a separate reference voltage line to the gate of the driving transistor, respectively. As pixel data and the reference voltage are provided to the driving transistor via separate lines, the compensation period of the pixel may overlap in time with a data writing period of pixels of a previous row of the display device, increasing the rate at which the display device is able to program the pixels of each row.

High speed pixel circuit for organic light emitting diode (OLED) display

Embodiments relate to a display device with subpixels that share switch transistors that selectively connect sources of driving transistors to a high voltage source. Further, part of reset transistors or part of a select transistor may be shared across multiple subpixels. The reset transistor selectively connects an anode of an organic light emitting diode (OLED) to a low voltage source. The select transistor selectively passes through pixel data from a data line when a gate signal is received via a gate line. Driver transistors and capacitors of the subpixels are independent and not shared. In this way, the dimensions of the subpixels may be reduced and enable increase in the density of the pixels.

Subpixels with reduced dimensions by using shared switching transistors

Embodiments relate to a display device including pixels that compensate a threshold voltage of a driving transistor using the body effect. Pixel data for the driving transistor increases the source-bulk voltage of the driving transistor during a compensation period as a result of the body effect. A separate reference voltage is not received at the pixel for the purpose of compensating the threshold voltage of the driving transistor. The increased source-bulk voltage is then used in an emission period of the pixel to compensate for the threshold voltage of the driving transistor.

Self-compensation of driving transistor threshold voltage using body effect

A display may be foveated to reduce power consumption and increase row scan timing margin. In one embodiment, the display includes pixels, where a first set of the pixels are formed to have a low resolution and a second set of the pixels are formed to have a high resolution. A first subset of the first set of pixels is formed in a first pixel cell layout and includes anodes formed in a first anode layout. A second subset of the second set of pixels is formed in a second pixel layout and includes anodes formed in a second anode layout. In another embodiment, the display similarly includes pixels formed to have a low resolution or a high resolution. The pixels of this embodiment may be formed in the same anode layout.

Foveated display and driving scheme

A method of manufacturing a display system includes forming a display element having a display active area over a silicon backplane, forming a display driver integrated circuit (DDIC), and bonding the display element to the display driver integrated circuit (DDIC). The display active area may include a light emitting diode such as an organic light emitting diode (OLED). Separately forming the display and the display circuitry may simplify formation of the OLED and allow for a higher density control interface between the display and the DDIC.

Low cost micro OLED structure and method

Described is a system including a display, a display controller, and control logic communicatively coupled to the display. The display controller determines, based on coordinates of a focus point on the display, boundaries of a first image region and a second image region in an output image to be rendered. The focus point is determined through tracking an eye movement of a user viewing the display. The first image region has a higher resolution than the second image region. The display controller is configured to send image data together with control signals to the control logic. The control signals cause the control logic to render the output image on the display using the image data. As part of rendering the second image region, the control logic outputs a shared signal onto signal lines that are coupled to light sources in a group of adjacent rows or columns.

Eye-tracking based foveation control of displays

A method of leakage-compensated global illumination comprises obtaining position data for at least one of a head or an eye of a user of a display system by an application processor, rendering image data for an image frame by the application processor based on the position data, modifying the image data to compensate for leakage associated with a global illumination by a display of the display system, and sending the image data to a display driver circuit of the display system for displaying the image frame on the display through the global illumination.

Switch leakage compensation for global illumination

A method including determining a maximum luminance location of a display based on a field of view of an eye of a user of the display, and driving a plurality of light sources in the display based on locations of the plurality of light sources with respect to the maximum luminance location of the display. The plurality of light sources is controlled to have different luminance levels in different display zones corresponding to different zones on the retina of the eye of the user. In some examples, the display zones of the display system that have higher luminance levels can be dynamically changed based on the field of view or the gaze direction of the eye of the user.

Methods of driving light sources in a near-eye display

A display system includes (a) a display element having an organic light emitting diode-containing display active area disposed over a silicon backplane, (b) a display driver integrated circuit (DDIC) attached to the display element and electrically connected with the display active area, and (c) a thermal barrier disposed within the silicon backplane, where the thermal barrier is configured to inhibit heat flow through the silicon backplane and into the display active area.

A device such as a micro-OLED includes a display element having a display active area disposed over a silicon backplane and a display driver integrated circuit (DDIC) electrically coupled to the display element through at least one contact that extends through the silicon backplane. Through silicon via (TSV) technology may be used to form the contacts. A chip-on-flex architecture may be used to orient and attach the DDIC to the silicon backplane.

Example devices may include a display (such as an emissive display), and a controller, where the controller is configured to determine an image content parameter for a displayed image shown on the display, and adjust a duty ratio of the display based on the image content parameter. The duty ratio may be dynamically adjusted based on, for example, an image content parameter that may be related to the brightness of the image, or a portion thereof. The controller may be configured to determine an image content parameter for each of one or more portions of a displayed image, and adjust a duty ratio for corresponding parts of the display based on the image content parameter associated with the respective one or more portions of the displayed image.

Content-adaptive duty ratio control

Embodiments relate to coordinating operation of an under-display camera and a portion of a display panel over the camera to reduce impact of light emitted from the display panel during light sensing periods of the under-display camera. Depending on the level of light in the surrounding of an electronic device, the light emission period of the display panel and the light sensing period of the under-display camera are adjusted. The timing of the light emission period and the light sensing period are controlled so that a row of pixels in the display panel is not in the light emission period when corresponding row or rows of sensors in the under-display camera are in the light sensing period. In this way, the under-display camera may capture images without the influence of light emitted from the display panel.

Scheme for operating under-display camera to prevent light interference from display

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to a pixel circuit with a burn-in compensation. The pixel circuit includes a light-emitting diode (LED), a first driving transistor between a voltage source and the LED, a switching transistor coupled to a gate electrode of the first driving transistor, and a second driving transistor connected between the voltage source and the LED. The first driving transistor provides first current from the voltage source to the LED according to a gate voltage of the first driving transistor. The switching transistor is turned on after receiving an enable signal. The second driving transistor provides second current from the voltage source to the LED according to a version of the gate voltage of the first driving transistor received at a gate of the second driving transistor via the switching transistor.

Burn-in compensation scheme for light-emitting diode based displays

Embodiments relate to a pixel circuit of a display with a pixel level burn-in compensation. The pixel circuit includes a light-emitting diode (LED), a first driving transistor between a voltage source and the LED, an enable transistor coupled to a gate electrode of the first driving transistor, and a second driving transistor connected between the voltage source and the LED. The first driving transistor provides first current from the voltage source to the LED according to a gate voltage of the first driving transistor. The enable transistor turns on responsive to a voltage level at an anode of the LED increasing to a threshold voltage level. The second driving transistor provides second current from the voltage source to the LED according to a version of the gate voltage of the first driving transistor received at a gate electrode of the second driving transistor via the enable transistor.

Pixel level burn-in compensation for light-emitting diode based displays

A system includes a display panel, a temperature sensor configured to measure a temperature of the display panel, a thermoelectric device coupled to the display panel and configured to transfer heat to or from the display panel, and a controller electrically coupled to the temperature sensor and the thermoelectric device. The controller is configured to receive the measured temperature of the display panel and, based on the measured temperature of the display panel, send a second signal to the thermoelectric device to cause the thermoelectric device to remove a first quantity of heat from the display panel or send a third signal to the thermoelectric device to cause the thermoelectric device to provide a second quantity of heat to the display panel.
