An organic light emitting device comprising, an anode, a cathode, and an emissive layer, located between the anode and the cathode, of a host compound, a first compound capable of phosphorescent emission at room temperature, and a second compound capable of phosphorescent emission at room temperature is provided. At least 95 percent of emission from the device is produced from the second compound when an appropriate voltage is applied across the anode and cathode.

Multiple dopant emissive layer OLEDs

An organic light emitting device an a method of obtaining illumination from such a device is provided. The device has a plurality of regions, each region having an organic emissive layer adapted to emit a different spectrum of light. The regions in combination emit light suitable for illumination purposes. The area of each region may be selected such that the device is more efficient than an otherwise equivalent device having regions of equal size. The regions may have an aspect ratio of at least about four. All parts of any given region may be driven at the same current.

Organic light emitting devices for illumination

An organic light emitting device is provided. The device has a plurality of regions, each region having an organic emissive layer adapted to emit a different spectrum of light. The regions in combination emit light suitable for illumination purposes. The area of each region may be selected such that the device is more efficient that an otherwise equivalent device having regions of equal size. The regions may have an aspect ratio of at least about four. All parts of any given region may be driven at the same current.

A method of fabricating an organic light emitting device is provided. A first organic layer is deposited over a first electrode. A second organic layer comprising a small molecule organic material is then deposited using solution processing over and in physical contact with the first organic layer, such that the first organic layer is insoluble in the solution used to deposit the second organic layer. A second electrode is then deposited over the second organic layer.

Structure and method of fabricating organic devices

A cathode adapted for use in an organic optoelectronic device is provided. The cathode has an electron injection layer, an organic buffer layer, a conducting layer, and a transparent conductive oxide layer disposed, in that order, over the organic operative layers of the optoelectronic device. A method of fabricating the cathode is also provided.

Transparent electrodes

An organic light emitting device is provided. The device includes an anode, an organic layer disposed over the anode, a layer comprising an alkaline metal compound disposed over the organic layer, a layer comprising Mg or a Mg-metal alloy disposed over the layer comprising an alkaline metal compound, and a layer comprising a transparent conductive metal oxide disposed over the layer comprising Mg or Mg-metal alloy. A method of fabricating an organic light emitting device is also provided. An organic layer is deposited over an anode. An electron injection enhancement layer consisting essentially of an alkaline metal compound is deposited over the organic layer. A transparent cathode, including a layer of Mg or Mg-metal alloy and a layer of metal oxide, is deposited over the layer of alkaline metal compound. A device fabricated by this process is also provided.

Efficiency transparent cathode

A device is provided. The device includes a substrate, a first electrode disposed over the substrate, a small molecule organic emissive layer disposed over the first electrode, and a second electrode disposed over the organic emissive layer. The substrate has a first index of refraction, and the organic emissive layer has a second index of refraction. The first index of refraction is higher than the second index of refraction. The device may have an external electroluminescent efficiency of at least about 56%. Bulky substituents or dopants may be used to decrease the index of refraction and/or the density of the organic emissive layer.

Increased emission efficiency in organic light-emitting devices on high-index substrates

A device and corresponding method are provided. The device includes an n-type transistor fabricated over a substrate, the n-type transistor having a gate and two current-carrying electrodes. The device also includes a non-inverted organic light emitting device fabricated over the substrate, the non-inverted organic light emitting device having an anode and a cathode. The cathode is connected to one of the current-carrying electrodes of the n-type transistor.

Device including OLED controlled by n-type transistor

OLED devices are disclosed having increased external electroluminescence quantum efficiencies, i.e., increased 'out-coupling' efficiencies. OLED devices that have increased out-coupling efficiencies and that are also protected from environmental elements such as moisture and oxygen are also disclosed. The OLED device of the present invention comprises a substrate; an active region positioned on the substrate, wherein the active region comprises an anode layer, a cathode layer and a light-emitting layer disposed between the anode layer and the cathode layer; and a polymeric layer disposed (a) over the active region, (b) under the active region or (c) both over and under the active region. The polymeric layer has microparticles incorporated therein, and the microparticles are effective to increase the out-coupling efficiency of the OLED. In one embodiment, the OLED device comprises a composite barrier layer and the microparticles are incorporated in a polymeric planarizing sublayer of the composite barrier layer. The composite barrier layer in this embodiment also protects the OLED from damage caused by environmental elements such as moisture and/or oxygen.

OLEDs having increased external electroluminescence quantum efficiencies

A device is provided, having an anode, a cathode, and a first organic layer disposed between the anode and the cathode. The first organic layer is capable of phosphorescent emissive when a voltage is applied between the anode and the cathode. A second organic layer disposed between the first organic layer and the cathode is also provided. The second organic layer is in direct contact with the first organic layer. The second organic layer may comprise a material having the structure:M may be selected from the group Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb, Re, Sn and Ge. The substituents R1 through R10 may be selected from the group consisting of alkyl and aryl groups. Each of R1 through R10 may represent no substitution, mono-, di-, or tri-substitution. The second organic layer may comprise a material having a dipole moment less than about 2.0 debyes, such that the device has an unmodified external quantum efficiency of at least about 3% and a lifetime of at least about 1000 hours at an initial photon flux of about 10photons/sr-sec. The second organic layer may comprise a metal complex having a plurality of ligands, wherein each ligand makes the same contribution to the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of the metal complex. The second organic layer may be in direct contact with the cathode, or there may be a separate organic layer between the second organic layer and the cathode. Other metal complexes having quinolate ligands may be used.

Materials and structures for enhancing the performance or organic light emitting devices

A device is provided. The device has a first electrode comprising a reflective material, and a second electrode disposed over the first electrode, the second electrode comprising a transmissive material. An organic layer including an emissive material is disposed between the first electrode and the second electrode. A light modulating element is disposed over the second electrode. In one embodiment, the first electrode is the only significantly reflective layer in the device. In another embodiment, the first and second electrodes and the organic layer are fabricated over the light modulating element, and the second electrode is reflective, not the first electrode. Color filters may be used to achieve a full-color display. Organic light emitting devices may be used that emit a broad spectra of light, such as white light. Organic light emitting devices that emit a single color of light may be used. Different organic light emitting devices that emit different spectra of light may be used.

Transflective display having an OLED backlight

An organic electronic device structure and a method of making the same. According to a first aspect of the invention, an organic electronic device structure is provided, which comprises: (a) a substrate layer; (b) an organic electronic region disposed over the substrate layer; (c) an adhesive layer disposed over the organic electronic device; and (d) a barrier layer disposed over the adhesive layer. According to a second aspect of the present invention, an organic electronic device structure is provided, which comprises: (a) a substrate layer; (b) an organic electronic region disposed over the substrate layer; (c) a barrier layer disposed over the organic electronic region; (d) an adhesive layer disposed over the substrate layer and over the barrier layer; and (e) an additional layer disposed over the adhesive layer. According to yet another aspect of the invention, a method for providing an organic electronic device structure of provided. The method comprises: (1) providing a first region comprising (a) a substrate layer and (b) an organic electronic region provided over the substrate layer; (2) providing a second region comprising at least one additional layer; and (3) adhering the first region to the second region using a pressure sensitive adhesive layer. In many preferred embodiments, the organic electronic device region is an OLED region.

Protected organic electronic devices and methods for making the same

An organic light emitting device that may have mixed organic layers is provided. A method of fabricating such an organic light emitting device is provided. A first organic material is solution deposited to form a patterned organic layer over a first electrode. A second organic material is deposited, by means other than solution processing, on and in physical contact with the first organic layer to form a second organic layer. The second organic layer forms a blanket layer over the first organic layer. A second electrode is then deposited over the second organic layer.

The present invention relates to an organic light emitting device (OLED) for producing electroluminescence having, in order, for example, an anode, a hole transporting layer (HTL), a blocking layer, an electron transporting layer (ETL), and a cathode. In the devices of the present invention, the hole transporting layer comprises a polymeric material, which material may be emissive or may be doped with an emissive dopant. The blocking layer and the electron transporting layer are small-molecule materials. The presence of a blocking layer confines the emission of light to the polymer layer, which may be a HTL or a separate emitting layer (EL). The devices of the present invention are suitable for use in single color, multi-color and full-color, passive or active matrix OLED displays.
