The present invention describes stem cells and progenitor cells derived from hemangiomas, including testing of angiogenic inhibitors using these cells. The invention as described is useful in providing a process to culture and propagate hemangioma stem cells and generate xenograft models to develop treatments for infantile hemangiomas and other types of vascular lesions.

Isolation and growth of stem cells from hemangiomas

An imaging system for locating subcutaneous blood vessels and a method for locating subcutaneous blood vessels using the system. The system includes at least one infrared emitter an infrared detector, a computing unit that enhances images and outputs enhanced images in substantially real time, a display device for displaying enhanced images, and a power source. The method includes the steps of preparing a body target area, putting on the headset, powering up the system, locating a target blood vessel, inserting a needle into the target blood vessel, and performing the medical procedure.

System and method for locating and accessing a blood vessel

An apparatus and method for thermally destroying tumors in which heat is generated by electrical resistance heating conducted to the target tissue. Computerized scanning is used to optimize the geometry of a thermal probe. The probe has a metal tip heated by a remote laser. The metal tip is mounted on the end of a wave guide fiber for transmitting the laser radiation to the metal tip. The tip is coated with a thin layer of biocompatible ceramic to avoid coagulated tissue sticking to the tip. The tip has one or more thin, thermally-conductive elements which deploy in stages to coagulate the tumor. The conductive elements may be thin wires or blades. On one embodiment, the conductive elements are composed of a shape memory material that is folded against the tip at lower temperatures and deploys at selected higher temperatures. In another embodiment, the conductive elements are blades that are deployed mechanically. The tip may be provided with a miniature thermocouple to provide temperature feedback information.

Conductive interstitial thermal therapy device

A system and method is provided to view an anatomical structure such as a blood vessel in high contrast with its surrounding tissue. The system and method may be used to produce an image of an anatomical structure using reflected electromagnetic radiation singularly scattered from target tissue. The system and method may also provide same-side illumination and detection of reflected electromagnetic radiation in a convenient integral imaging device. The system and method may also provide helmet mounted imaging technology in a single integral helmet which allows the wearer to view an anatomical structure located within a patient such that the image is continuously oriented according to the orientation of the helmet wearer's head. The system and method may also be used in the performance of venipuncture. The system and method may provide for improved contrast between any anatomical structure and its surrounding tissue for use in any imaging system.

Method and apparatus for detecting electro-magnetic reflection from biological tissue

A device to guide the placement of the catheter needle more accurately by placing the needle with a mechanical firing mechanism. The device is an integrated handheld unit comprising an ultrasonic probe with a miniature display and a mechanical firing mechanism that holds the catheter needle and deploys it into the target. The device is connected to an external ultrasound machine which provides the imaging for the device. The display provides a graphical user interface to assist in alignment with the target. The depth of placement of the catheter is set by moving a horizontal indicator over the target display using thumb switches on the handle of the device. The thumb switches are connected to a servo motor or the like that adjusts the angle at which the catheter is deployed. The servo motor simultaneously adjusts the distance of the catheter from the skin of the patient to compensate for the change in the length of the path to the target caused by the change in deployment angle. The catheter needle is deployed by a stored energy mechanism. The device may also include sensors to verify accurate placement of the catheter.

Ultrasonic guided catheter deployment system

The thermally conductive tip is mounted on the end of a fiber that contains the electrical power leads and other electrical leads connecting to monitoring devices associated with the tip. The tip is coated with a thin layer of biocompatible ceramic to avoid coagulated tissue sticking to the tip. The tip has one or more thin, thermally-conductive elements which deploy in stages to coagulate the tumor. The conductive elements may be thin wires or blades. On one embodiment, the conductive elements are composed of a shape memory material that is folded against the tip at lower temperatures and deploys at selected higher temperatures. In another embodiment, the conductive elements are blades that are deployed mechanically. The tip may be provided with a miniature thermocouple to provide temperature feedback information. The resistance heating element may be pyrolytic graphite.

A topical anesthetic solution includes a tetracaine base dissolved in a solvent, such as isopropyl alcohol. A method for anesthetizing the ear canal and tympanic membrane using the anesthetic solution includes providing a dry, expandable applicator which expands as it absorbs a fluid and inserting the applicator, dry or partially wetted, into the ear canal and advancing the applicator into the ear canal to the vicinity of the tympanic membrane. The applicator is then fully wetted with the anesthetic solution, causing the applicator to fully expand within the ear canal, and is left in the ear canal for a period sufficient to effect anesthesia of the ear canal and tympanic membrane. An apparatus for applying a topical anesthetic to the ear canal and tympanic membrane includes an expandable, absorbent applicator that expands when soaked with a liquid, an applicator withdrawal tether attached to the applicator, and an applicator inserting and soaking device. The inserting and soaking device includes an elongated portion constructed and arranged to insert the applicator, releasably secured to the end thereof, into the ear canal, a fluid conduit defined within the inserting device, a fluid reservoir in fluid communication with the conduit, and a fluid forcing mechanism constructed and arranged to force fluid from the fluid reservoir into the conduit to wet the applicator. A kit for anesthetizing the ear canal includes an absorbent, expandable applicator with a withdrawal tether attached thereto, a gripping and inserting device for gripping the applicator and inserting it into the ear canal, and a fluid injecting device for injecting fluid into the ear canal to soak the applicator.

The device incorporates a laser which produces a laser beam at an appropriate wavelength which is specifically focused to perforate the skin of a patient. Optionally a container can be incorporated in the device for collection of blood from the perforated tissue.

A multi-function endoscope capable of insertion within a body cavity for treatment/diagnostic purposes. The endoscope includes a flexible probe having an optical fiber connected to a laser light source, an optical fiber bundle connected to an illuminating light source, and another optical fiber bundle with a focusing lens thereon connected to a viewing system. The probe further includes an optical fiber having a sensor system associated therewith for making temperature and fluid pressure measurements within the body cavity. Also included are fluid conduits through the probe, and detecting wires for receiving electrical potentials from body cavity tissues. Finally, the probe includes steering wires which, when moved, cause probe movement. The steering wires are moved using a manipulator system consisting of stepper motors connected to a computer controller.
