A system and method for detecting duplicates during processing. The duplicate detection may be performed by a financial institution, such as a bank. The method may be implemented on a computer based system. The duplicate detection method may be automated. The method may be applied initially to incoming electronic data files prior to further processing of the electronic data to prevent processing of duplicate items. The system and method may use a function, such as a hash function, to perform the duplicate detection. Other functions, such as a Bloom filter which may use multiple hash functions, may be used to perform the duplicate detection.

An embodiment of the present invention is directed to receiving a first independent log from a first trading partner wherein the first independent log comprises at least one request log entry associated with a transaction wherein the request log entry comprises at least a request identifier; receiving a second independent log from a second trading partner wherein the second independent log comprises at least one reply log entry associated with the transaction between the first trading partner and the second trading partner, wherein the reply log entry comprises at least a reply identifier; matching the at least one request log entry and the at least one reply log entry based on one or more of the request identifier and the reply identifier at a third party interface; identifying non-matching log entries at the third party interface; and forwarding the non-matching log entries.

An embodiment of the present invention is directed to receiving a first independent log from a first trading partner wherein the first independent log comprises at least one request log entry associated with a transaction wherein the request log entry comprises at least a request identifier; receiving a second independent log from a second trading partner wherein the second independent log comprises at least one reply log entry associated with the transaction between the first trading partner and the second trading partner, wherein the reply log entry comprises at least a reply identifier; matching the at least one request log entry and the at least one reply log entry based on one or more of the request identifier and the reply identifier at a third party interface; identifying non-matching log entries at the third party interface; and forwarding the non-matching log entries for one or more of error processing and dispute resolution.

The invention includes a markup language according to the SGML standard in which document type definitions are created under which electronic documents are divided into blocks that are associated with logical fields that are specific to the type of block. Each of many different types of electronic documents can have a record mapping to a particular environment, such as a legacy environment of a banking network, a hospital's computer environment for electronic record keeping, a lending institution's computer environment for processing loan applications, or a court or arbitrator's computer system. Semantic document type definitions for various electronic document types (including, for example, electronic checks, mortgage applications, medical records, prescriptions, contracts, and the like) can be formed using mapping techniques between the logical content of the document and the block that is defined to include such content. Also, the various document types are preferably defined to satisfy existing customs, protocols and legal rules.

Method and system for processing electronic documents

Methods and apparatus are disclosed for re-initializing a secure password series based on an iterated hash function. User login information is communicated over an insecure network connection or other transmission medium between a client and a server. The server provides an indication that a first login series based on a first password has reached a predetermined minimum number of remaining hash function iterations. This indication could also be generated by the client. In either case, the client responds to the indication by generating an initialization signal which relates the first login series based on the first password to a second login series based on a second password. The initialization signal may be generated as the exclusive-or of the results of applying a first number of hash function iterations to the first password and a second number of hash function iterations to the second password. The client transmits the initialization signal to the server, which stores it along with an encrypted password transmitted in a previous valid first series login by the same user. The server then compares a function of the stored initialization signal and an initial second series login to the previously-stored first series login to determine if the initial second series login is valid. The second password may be generated by the client using a pass phrase portion of the first password and a new seed portion which does not require additional user input. The password re-initialization process can thus be performed automatically without any need to notify the user.

Re-initialization of an iterated hash function secure password system

An electronic instrument is created in a computer-based method for effecting a transfer of funds from an account of a payer in a funds-holding institution to a payee. The electronic instrument includes an electronic signature of the payer, digital representations of payment instructions, the identity of the payer, the identity of the payee, and the identity of the funds-holding institution. A digital representation of a verifiable certificate by the institution of the authenticity of the instrument is appended to the instrument. This enables a party receiving the instrument, e.g., the payee or a bank, to verify the authenticity of the account or account holder. The invention may be generally applied to any financial electronic document.

Electronic funds transfer instruments

An electronic bill payment system and method include billing equipment for creating approval records and generating approval numbers for each pre-authorized subscriber. The system also includes an interactive payment approval apparatus into which subscribers dial to approve payment and which determines, based upon information collected, whether to initiate electronic funds transfer. An approval record data base and a call history log data base are also part of the bill payment system. To approve electronic bill payment a subscriber, once pre-authorized, need only dial up the payment approval apparatus and enter the assigned approval number. A series of security checks and comparisons are performed to guard against accidental and malicious entry of approval numbers. Once all security checks are cleared, a confirmation number is announced to the subscriber, and an electronic funds transfer is initiated.

System and method for paying bills electronically

Apparatus and methods are disclosed for recovering alignment from a non-ideally encoded multi-bit digital signal without the need to embed framing information within the encoded signal or append framing bits thereto. In particular, the invention is disclosed in the context of recovering septet alignment in a sub-band ADPCM (adaptive differential pulse code modulated) 7 kHz audio digital signal without the need to embed any framing information within the digital signal itself. Specifically, in this context, this method relies on first gathering statistics from a 56 kbit/second 7 kHz audio digital signal itself for a pre-defined number of incoming bits that occur during a measurement interval and for every one of seven possible alignments for a septet. Once these statistics are gathered, the alignment is selected to be that which satisfies various pre-defined statistical tests that are dictated by non-uniform deterministic characteristics that occur in the ADPCM audio digital signal itself, once it is properly aligned, and specifically certain characteristics which exist in a distribution of the occurrences of the different combinations of the four most significant bits of the low-band ADPCM codewords situated within properly aligned ADPCM septets that occurred during the measurement interval.
