A device in the form of a split clamp star wheel adapted to be clamped on the spindle carrier extension of a multiple spindle automatic bar machine in a predetermined axial location with respect to the spindle drum face and having at the points of the radiating arms thereof laterally pre-adjusted screws coaxially aligned with the axes of the respective spindles, the holders for the end cutting tools being longitudinally adjustably clamped in the respective end cutting tool slides (or auxiliary slides thereon) when the ends of the respective tools are engaged with the ends of the laterally pre-adjusted screws.

Device for setting end working tools of multiple spindle automatic bar

A spring actuated chuck wherein a slotted flange, tapered shank tool adapter is clamped to a holder by a spring actuated clamping and ejecting nut assembly which includes a nut having threaded engagement with the holder, a clamping ring rotatably adjustably secured to the nut having clamping lugs to engage the flange of the adapter to clamp the adapter to the holder, an ejector axially retained in the nut and non-rotatably axially slidably engaged with the holder to engage the flange of the adapter thus to release the adapter from the holder, and a latch member extending axially from the holder and engaged with the clamping ring operative upon movement by the flange of the adapter to release the nut assembly for spring actuated clamping movement. Release of the adapter is effected by rotation of the nut in the opposite direction against spring pressure for engagement of the ejector with the flange of the adapter and for re-engagement of the latch member with the clamping ring. The spring actuated chuck herein is further characterized in that the threads of the nut and an annular chamber containing the nut actuating spring are isolated from fine chips and coolant when a tool mounted in the adapter is performing a cutting operation.

Spring actuated chuck

A tool presetting fixture is disclosed for use with cross-slide type tool holders which are usable on a multiple spindle automatic machine tool. The tool holder has a tool holding pocket to hold a cross-slide type tool with a tool tip. The fixture has a base with a first gage surface mounted for movement parallel to the base to gage the spindle centerline height of a tool tip in the tool holding pocket. The fixture also has a rear wall on the base which has a second gage surface perpendicular to the base. Gage means is provided to gage the distance from this second gage surface to the tool tip and screws are provided in the tool holder and acting on this second gage surface to obtain a gaged distance of the tool tip from a reference surface of the machine tool to establish a predetermined longitudinal dimension on the workpiece. Further a side wall on the fixture provides a third gage surface perpendicular to the base and also perpendicular to the second gage surface and this permits gaging the distance of the tool tip to this third gage surface to gage the workpiece cutting radius. The foregoing abstract is merely a resume of one general application, is not a complete discussion of all principles of operation or applications, and is not to be construed as a limitation on the scope of the claimed subject matter.

Tool presetting fixture

A reversible driver for a threading tool, such as a tap or die, is disclosed. The driver has rotary input and output members with a forward clutch connected therebetween and a reverse clutch connected through reverse gearing between the input and the output members. Each clutch has drive and driven clutch elements and a first spring urges both forward and reverse clutches toward engagement. A second spring is stronger than the first spring and urges the forward clutch toward engagement so that a tap rotated by the output member will tap a hole in a workpiece until the forward clutch is released. Each clutch utilizes a plurality of substantially hemispherical projections engaging longitudinal abutments as a form of dog clutch. The foregoing abstract is merely a resume of one general application, is not a complete discussion of all principles of operation or applications, and is not to be construed as a limitation on the scope of the claimed subject matter.

Threading attachment

A tool presetting device for longitudinally presetting an end cutting tool in a tool holder for use in a single or multiple spindle automatic bar machine characterized in that the device has a tool holder support which non-rotatably holds the tool holder in a predetermined axial position for axial adjustment of the tool to engage a preset micrometer which is clamped in one end of a micrometer holder. The other end of the micrometer holder is frictionally swingably retained in a selected groove of a grooved bar which is parallel to the tool holder and tool for swinging movement of the micrometer in a plane perpendicular to the tool holder and tool axis from a position laterally clearing the tool holder and tool for axial insertion and removal of the tool holder and tool from the tool holder support to a position whereat the end of the tool may be axially advanced with respect to the tool holder for engagement with the micrometer. The grooves in the bar provide for adjustment of the micrometer holder in 1' increments while the micrometer provides for precise adjustment from 0.000 to 1.000'.

Tool presetting device

A chuck is disclosed wherein the jaws of the chuck may be locked by tapered lock means so that if actuating force on the chucking and unchucking actuator is lost during rotation of the chuck, the external diameter of the workpiece will still be gripped by the jaws. A first linkage in the chuck body interconnects an axially movable actuator with the radially movable master jaws. This may be a bell crank lever or an interconnecting wedge. First lost motion means is provided in this first linkage. A second linkage is provided from the actuator to the tapered lock means and includes a second lost motion means which is smaller than the first lost motion means. A spring urges the tapered lock means into a locked position when the workpiece is chucked and then if force is lost on the actuator, this tapered lock means acting on the master jaws prevents release of the workpiece. When the actuator is moved toward the unchucking position, it acts first through the second lost motion connection to release the tapered lock means and then acts through the first lost motion connection to move the jaws outwardly to release the workpiece.

Rotatable chuck mechanism

A spade drill characterized in that the slotted blade clamping end of the holder has oppositely beveled end surfaces which are perpendicular to the respective side faces of the blade and which are at an angle less than the angle of the respective cutting edges of the blade to define convergent passages of right angle cross section for funneling or tracking chips to diametrically opposite obtuse angle cross section longitudinal grooves in the holder.

Spade drill

A precision heavy duty indexer characterized in that the indexing member thereof is positively locked to the indexer housing in desired precise axial, radial and angular indexed position by interengaged gear means of said indexing member and said housing, and is unlocked for indexing movement by disengaging said gear means, the gear means of said housing being carried by the outer peripheral portion of a laterally flexible pneumatic or hydraulically-actuated diaphragm having its inner peripheral portion fixed to the housing.

Precision heavy duty indexer

An adjustable floating reamer characterized by its relatively great length and small diameter embodying a closure cap for the diametrically slotted end of a shank member which has a long and thin tubular portion which closely embraces and supports the slotted end of the shank member and which has a closed end in abutting engagement with the slotted end of the shank member to define therewith a rectangular slot in which overlapping reamer blades are slidably supported for radial adjustment and for radial floating movement about a pivot which is spaced a great distance from the blades so that no binding action occurs during the floating movement of the blades during use of the reamer.

Adjustable floating reamer

A floating tool holder for a reamer or like tool characterized in that a shank member with respect to which a tool drive member has a floating drive connection has a centralizing pin fixed therewithin which provides a spring centering device to yieldably position said drive member coaxially of said shank member, and which axially retains said drive member for lateral floating movement without axial play.

A spade drill characterized in that the slotted blade clamping end of the holder has non-symmetrical oppositely disposed blade clamping faces, each of which extends close to the cutting end and cutting diameter of the blade on the side of the blade opposite to the side containing one cutting edge thus to provide firm support for said one cutting edge and is beveled at its end to provide a wide divergent passage for free passage of chips from the other cutting edge to the longitudinal obtuse angle groove of the holder which intersects such divergent passage at its wide end.

A precision heavy duty indexer characterized in that the indexing member is hydraulically actuated to a locking position whereat it is locked to the indexer housing in desired precise indexed position without circumferential or radial play and without transmission of torque load to the indexer drive means or without transmission of radial load to the indexing member-housing bearings; and is hydraulically actuated to unlocking position whereat it is released from said housing for indexing movement and whereat it is engaged by said drive means operative to index the indexing member to the next indexed position. The indexer herein is further characterized in that the indexer drive means comprises a hydraulic motor driven worm which meshes with a worm wheel having driving engagement with said indexing member, said worm having a sensor-counter thereon to de-energize said hydraulic motor when the indexing member has been indexed through a predetermined angle from one indexed position to the next.
