A computer program product may include storage media embodying program instructions executable by a baseboard management controller (BMC) within a compute node to: receive a request to install a central processing unit (CPU) in the compute node; identify a current hardware configuration of the compute node; identify a plurality of available locations within the compute node that are compatible with installation of the CPU; calculate, for each of the identified plurality of available locations, a predicted performance score for the CPU on the basis that the CPU were to be installed in the available location, wherein the predicted performance scores are calculated in response to receiving the request; select a location from among the plurality of available locations that is associated with the greatest performance score for the CPU; and generate user output indicating the selected location where the CPU should be installed.

Selection of a location for installation of a CPU in a compute node using predicted performance scores

An apparatus and a computer program product includes non-transitory computer readable storage media embodying program instructions. The program instructions are executable by a baseboard management controller (BMC) to receive a request to install a hardware component in a compute node, identify a current hardware configuration of the compute node, and identify a plurality of available locations within the compute node for installation of the requested component. Still further, the BMC may identify, for each available location, a historical performance database record that includes a performance score for a component installed in the same location as the available location, has the same component type as the requested component, and was collected from a compute node having the same hardware configuration as the current compute node. The BMC may select an available location that has the greatest performance score for the component, and generate output indicating the selected location for installation.

Selection of a location for installation of a hardware component in a compute node using historical performance scores

A system comprises a plurality of fans, wherein each of the fans is configurable to run at a unique fan speed that is different from fan speeds of other fans from the plurality of fans. A plurality of variable-positioned devices, capable of being positioned at various locations within the system, are physically positioned such that airflow from one of the plurality of fans strikes a particular variable-positioned device. A plurality of anemometers, each of which is connected to a particular variable-positioned device, measure airflow across the variable-positioned devices. A system controller, which contains location information that identifies a physical position within the system of each of the plurality of fans, utilizes airflow readings from each of the anemometers to identify a physical location of each of the plurality of variable-positioned devices by matching physical locations of the fans to measured airflow across the variable-positioned devices.

Identifying physical locations of devices within an electronic system

Controlling electromagnetic ('EM') radiation in a data center having a number EM sections, including: receiving, by an EM controller, a specification of preferred EM radiation characteristics for the data center; and setting, by the EM controller, a state of each EM section in accordance with the specification, where the state of each EM section may be one of: an absorption state in which the EM section absorbs EM radiation or a reflection state in which the EM section reflects EM radiation.

Controlling electromagnetic radiation in a data center

An apparatus comprising a temperature switch and a logic device, and a method of implementing multiple dynamic temperature thresholds. The temperature switch has a temperature sensor, a temperature threshold select input, and an output to a temperature threshold interrupt line, wherein the temperature switch selects a current temperature threshold from multiple predetermined temperature thresholds as determined by a state of the temperature threshold select input. The temperature switch causes an interrupt assertion on the temperature threshold interrupt line in response to the temperature sensor indicating a sensed temperature that exceeds the temperature threshold. The logic device has an input coupled to the temperature threshold interrupt line and a temperature threshold select output coupled to the temperature threshold select input of the temperature switch. The logic device automatically increments the temperature threshold select output in response to detecting an interrupt assertion on the temperature threshold interrupt line.
