Federated computing architectures allow for the interoperability of components and facilitates the exchange of data between varying systems and components. Endpoints, such as those utilizing Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) assume the same XMPP stream is used for both messaging and presence. Such systems are unable to accommodate a representational state transfer ('REST') or, in other words, be 'RESTful,' where the messaging server and presence server are distinct servers and may be on different domains. Provided here are systems described to split the protocols and enable an endpoint to appear to communicate with a single server while a protocol splitter routes and receives messages from distinct servers handling messaging and presence separately.

Telephony endpoint presence and instant messaging data-packet management

A first Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) REFER message is sent by an application server to a User Agent (UA). A UA is typically in a communication device, such as a telephone or personal computer. The first SIP REFER message requests the UA to provide a unique Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) for an instance of a networked application. For example, a networked application may be a call recording application. In response to sending the first SIP REFER message, a SIP NOTIFY message with the URI for the instance of the networked application is received by the application server. The application server sends a second SIP REFER message to the UA using the URI. The second SIP REFER message includes information for managing a widget. A widget is object, such as a button or sound. The widget is then displayed or played on a communication device according to a set of rules.

Pushing graphical user interface widgets for communication devices

A system and method for integrating conventional enterprise communication systems into an IMS-based services environment are disclosed. In one embodiment, when a call request is received for a call between first and second local users of a PBX, the PBX determines whether a class of service for either the first or second local user is for Exposed Local Call (ELC) processing. If so, then call information is routed through a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) core network that is coupled to an Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) server to provide IMS services to the call.

System and method for integrating conventional enterprise communication systems into an IP multimedia subsystem-based services environment

A method and apparatus are provided for establishing and maintaining a backhaul link over an Internet Protocol based network for transporting Layer 3 ISDN messages. A signalling gateway establishes a TCP connection to a Media Gateway Controller through the IP based network. The Layer 3 ISDN messages generated within an ISDN network attached to the IP based network are then transported between the signalling gateway and the Media Gateway Controller over the TCP connection. The integrity of the TCP connection is monitored using a heartbeat mechanism based on UDP packets. Both the signalling gateway and the Media Gateway Controller transmit UDP packets at regular intervals, and monitor for the arrival of UDP packets from the other device. If a provisioned number of consecutive UDP packets do not arrive from the other device, then a failure of the backhaul link is declared. The signalling gateway then attempts to re-establish the backhaul link.
