A method of producing a fluidic module from two or more pieces (B.sub.1 B.sub.2) of plastic material having an intermolecular bonded interface, comprises forming an interface surface (2) on each piece, forming at least one fluidic passageway (4) in at least one of the interface surfaces, assembling the pieces with the interface surfaces in contact with each other and confining them against expansion. Heat is applied to the assembled pieces to induce their expansion against total or limited confinement to cause transmigration of molecules from one interface surface to the other to bond the pieces together.

Method of bonding plastics

An analysis system includes sample insertion module structure with structure defining a reduced pressure reservoir, structure defining a sample region, and structure defining a reagent circuit that includes metering chamber structure in series with the reagent circuit. First transfer valve structure is arranged to couple the sample region to the reagent circuit on one side of the metering chamber structure, and second transfer valve structure is arranged to couple the reagent circuit to the reduced pressure reservoir structure on the side of the metering chamber structure remote from the first transfer valve structure for inserting an intact metered quantity of sample liquid into a reagent stream.

Analysis system

A valve is disclosed comprising a first body portion (2) having a first surface (16), a second body portion (4) having a second surface (51) facing the first surface, a flexible sheet (8) positioned between the first and second surfaces, a void (4) in the first body portion created and defined by a concave surface (46) formed in the first surface and one side (18) of the flexible sheet. There are at least two fluid passageways (20) (22) in the first body portion communicating with the void at spaced locations, at least one of the fluid passageways being a channel formed in the first surface and terminating at the void. A source of pressure and vacuum (50) (54) is provided for flexing the sheet against and away from the first body portion in order that when the flexible sheet is flexed against the first body portion, the passageways are sealed from each other, and when the flexible sheet is flexed away from the first body portion the fluid passageways are placed in communication with each other by way of the void.

A liquid handling system useful in apparatus for analyzing biological liquid specimens or the like includes a plurality of sample metering chambers, a distribution manifold connected between a sample inlet port and the sample metering chambers, and a corresponding plurality of auxiliary liquid metering chambers connected to corresponding auxiliary liquid reservoirs. Liquids are flowed from the sample inlet port through the distribution manifold to the sample metering chambers and from auxiliary liquid reservoirs to the auxiliary liquid metering chambers under the influence of reduced pressures which are selectively connected to the flow network through an integrated valve array and reduced pressure manifolds.

Liquid handling system

A valve that is particularly useful in biological fluid handling systems includes a body member that has a firm and stable support surface and a flexible sheet member that has a surface for conforming and mating engagement with the surface of the valve body member. A land portion in the surface of one of the valve members separates two fluid flow channels in that member. An actuator is arranged to flex the sheet member between a first position in which the surface of the sheet member is in mating and sealing engagement with the surface of the body member to sealing block flow between the two channels, and a second position in which the sheet surface is spaced from the first position to allow fluid flow across the land surface between the two flow channels.

A system for analyzing a biological fluid specimen or the like includes an analysis chamber and an electrochemical electrode measuring system connected in sensing relation to the analysis chamber. A flow network connects a sample inlet port and an auxiliary fluid reservoir to the analysis chamber. The flow network includes a sample line connected between the sample inlet port and the analysis chamber and an auxiliary manifold connected to the auxiliary fluid reservoir. A positive displacement pump is connected in the sample line between the analysis chamber and a waste outlet port. A valved T-connection is provided between the sample line and the manifold; an inlet isolation valve is in the sample flow path between the sample inlet and the valved T-connection; an analysis chamber isolation valve is in the sample flow path between the valved T-connection and the analysis chamber; and both the sample line and the manifold have a vent valve, the sample line vent valve being connected between the inlet and chamber isolation valves and the manifold vent valve being connected upstream of the auxiliary fluid reservoir. Coordinated operation of the several valves permits the pump to selectively flow fluid from the auxiliary reservoir or a sample through the analysis chamber, together with imposition of nonlaminar flow conditions by concurrent operation of the vent valves to provide effective cleaning of flow surfaces and analysis chambers.

Apparatus for analyzing the contents of a sealed package includes a package alignment assembly, and a probe assembly that has a puncturing tip. The package alignment assembly includes a positioning support surface in alignment with the puncturing tip and supplemental resiliently supported structure spaced from the support surface for aligning the package to be analyzed with the probe assembly. A flow path extends from the puncturing tip to an analysis unit for withdrawing and analyzing a sample of the contents of the package.

Package sampling system

A portable fluid analyzer has a sampling section with flow passage structure for sealing engagement with a discharge port of a zwickel fitting or the like and retainer structure for engagement with the fitting. The retainer structure is urged by a spring towards a retaining position and is movable, by a manual operator towards a released position. When the retainer structure is engaged with the fitting and the manual operator is released, the sealing member is urged by the spring into engagement with the fitting's discharge port. The analyzer also includes an analysis chamber connected to the discharge end of the flow passage structure and monitoring means for providing an output as a function of a constituent of the fluid in the analysis chamber.
