A method and apparatus for infrastructure performance monitoring are described. In one embodiment, the method comprises monitoring virtual application performance, identifying degradation in the application performance, and correlating the degradation to one or more of virtual and physical infrastructure components.

A method and apparatus for monitoring a data center infrastructure are described. In one embodiment, the method comprises collecting traffic data from the network, collecting storage I/O performance information, collecting central processing unit (CPU) and memory usage information, determining a virtual infrastructure of the network, compute and storage comprising virtual entities; and grouping the traffic data based at least on the virtual entities.

An access point in a wireless network is traced by sending an internet protocol (IP) packet from a detector to the access point through the wireless network. The detector and the access point are connected through a private wired network. The IP packet is sent with the source IP address field and the destination IP address of the IP packet set to the wireless IP address and wired IP address, respectively, of the detector. The IP packet is routed back to the detector through a switch in the private wired network. When the IP packet is received at the detector, a source IP address, which corresponds to the port on the switch used to send the IP packet, is determined from the received IP packet.

The service set identification (SSID) of an access point (AP) in a wireless local area network (WLAN), where the AP suppresses its SSID in beacon frames broadcasted by the AP, is determined. The probe request frame is received at a detector in the wireless local area network. The received probe request frame is analyzed to determine if the station that transmitted the probe request frame is an unauthorized station.

A wireless local area network (WLAN) is monitored by receiving transmissions exchanged between one or more stations and an access point (AP) in the WLAN using a detector located in the WLAN. A database is compiled based on the received transmissions. The received transmissions are analyzed to determine the state of a station. The compiled database and the determined state of the station are used to diagnose connectivity problems of the station.

In a wireless local area network, an access point failing to adhere to proper power management protocol is detected by analyzing a beacon frame sent by the access point to determine if a traffic information map (TIM) in the beacon frame is zero. A frame sent by a station is analyzed to determine if the station is in a power save mode. A data frame sent by the access point is analyzed to determine if the data frame is destined for the station. An improper power management protocol condition of the access point is determined based on the foregoing analysis.

A method and system for measuring the throughput of transmissions over a wireless local area network having a station and an access point. The station can send messages to the access point during a test period, where the messages can be sent as data frames. The access point can receive messages sent from the station during the test period. For messages received by the access point, the access point can send acknowledgements to the station, where the acknowledgements can be sent as control frames. The station can receive acknowledgements from the access point for messages received by the access point. The station can determine a throughput from the station to the access point for the test period based on the acknowledgements received at the station from the access point during the test period.

Measuring the throughput of transmissions over wireless local area networks

A method and system for detecting a hidden node in a wireless local area network having a first station, a second station, and an access point. The first station can send a message, where the message can be sent as a data frame. After receiving the message, the access point can send the message to the second station. The second station can receive the message from the access point. In response to receiving the message, the second station can send an acknowledgement to the access point, where the acknowledgement can be sent as a control frame. The first station can monitor for the acknowledgement sent from the second station to the access point.
