Organic photovoltaic devices with compound charge transport layers are described herein. One such device includes a substrate, a first electrode coupled to the substrate, a second electrode disposed above the first electrode, and photoactive layers disposed between the first electrode and the second electrode. The device further includes a compound charge transport layer disposed between the photoactive layers and either the first electrode or the second electrode. The compound charge transport layer includes a charge transport layer and a metal-oxide interlayer disposed between the charge transport layer and the photoactive layers. The charge transport layer may be a hole transport layer or an electron transport layer.

Compound charge transport layer for organic photovoltaic devices

Photoactive compounds are disclosed. The disclosed compounds can exhibit molecular structural elements tending to increase the evaporability of the compounds, such as by including geometric core disruption by use of conformationally restricted side groups instead of freely rotatable side groups or use of indandione moieties instead of dicyanomethyleneindanone moieties. The disclosed photoactive compounds include those with an imine-bridging linking moiety, which can shift the optical properties to a more red-shifted absorbance as compared to compounds with an alkene-bridging linking moiety. The disclosed photoactive compounds can be used in organic photovoltaic devices, such as visibly transparent or opaque photovoltaic devices.

Photoactive compounds for vapor deposited organic photovoltaic devices

Photoactive compounds are disclosed. The disclosed photoactive compounds include metal complexes with dipyrromethene-based ligands, which can be substituted with a variety of different side chains or groups or can include various fused ring configurations, such as including aromatic or heteroaromatic groups. The metal complexes may include two dipyrromethene-based ligands, which can be the same or different. The photoactive compounds can be used as photoactive materials in organic photovoltaic devices, such as visibly transparent or opaque photovoltaic devices.

Metal coordinated photoactive compounds for transparent photovoltaic devices

Described herein are systems, methods, devices, and other techniques for implementing smart windows, smart home systems that include smart windows, and user devices and applications for control thereof. A smart window, or photovoltaic window, may include a photovoltaic configured to generate electrical power from incident light onto the photovoltaic window, store the electrical power, and send the electrical power to an electronics package or various electrical loads including a wireless communication system, sensors, or window functions. The photovoltaic window may communicate with various smart home system devices such as hub devices and user devices, which may include the reception of control data at the photovoltaic window and the transmission of sensor data captured by the window sensors.

Visibly transparent photovoltaic devices are disclosed, such as those are transparent to visible light but absorb near-infrared light and/or ultraviolet light. The photovoltaic devices make use of transparent electrodes and near-infrared absorbing visibly transparent photoactive compounds, optical materials, and/or buffer materials.

Visibly transparent, near-infrared-absorbing metal-complex photovoltaic devices

Photovoltaic devices having photoactive layers coupled to buffer layers are disclosed. Such devices may be transparent to visible light but absorb near-infrared light and/or ultraviolet light. The photovoltaic devices may include a p-phenylene layer that acts as a buffer layer. The photovoltaic devices may include one or more photoactive layers. The one or more photoactive layers may include a single planar heterojunction, a single bulk heterojunction (BHJ), or multiple stacked BHJs that have complementary absorption characteristics, among other possibilities.

A visibly transparent luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) is disclosed. The LSC includes a transparent substrate having at least one edge surface. A dye layer is coupled to the substrate, the dye layer having a peak absorption wavelength outside the visible band, the dye layer being configured to re-emit light at a peak emission wavelength outside the visible band, at least a portion of the re-emitted light being waveguided to the edge surface of the substrate. A photovoltaic device is coupled to the edge surface of the transparent substrate, the photovoltaic device being configured to absorb light at the peak emission wavelength and generate electrical energy.

A photovoltaic module includes a first transparent electrode layer characterized by a first sheet resistance, a second transparent electrode layer, and a photovoltaic material layer. The photovoltaic material layer is located between the first transparent electrode layer and the second transparent electrode layer. Materials, methods and system for transparent photovoltaic devices are disclosed, such as those are transparent to visible light but absorb near-infrared light and/or ultraviolet light. The photovoltaic devices make use of transparent electrodes and visibly transparent UV acceptor molecules and structurally related visibly transparent photoactive compounds, which may be useful as photoactive materials, optical materials, and/or buffer materials.
