A flyback power converter includes a hybrid clamp circuit and a corresponding power management unit that substantially optimizes the performance of the flyback power converter in its entire line and load ranges. The clamp circuit, which is connected in parallel to a primary winding of the flyback transformer, includes a parallel combination of a capacitor and resistor that is connected in series with a parallel combination of a switch and a diode. By sensing the operating conditions, the power management circuit configures the clamp circuit either as a passive clamp or as an active clamp. In the passive-clamp configuration, the switch is kept turned off. In the active-clamp configuration, the switch operates with pulse-width modulation (PWM) which enables ZVS turn-on of the main switch.

Power converter and method of control thereof

A power supply includes power modules. Each of the power modules includes an input stage and an output stage. The input stage generates an intermediate voltage, and the output stage outputs a DC supply voltage according to the intermediate voltage. The input stages are controlled with at least one first common control signal having a common duty cycle, and the output stages are controlled with at least one second common control signal having a common duty cycle.

Power supply with multiple converters and averaged feedforward control

A flux-balancing method for an isolated bidirectional converter uses a flux-balancing control loop and a current-balancing control loop to control the DC components in the primary and secondary currents. The flux-balancing control loop keeps the average magnetizing current substantially zero and the current-balancing control loop keeps the average primary current or the average secondary current substantially zero. The flux-balancing loop adjusts the duty ratio of a set of switches in a corresponding bridge. The adjusted duty ratio is designed to substantially eliminate the DC component in the magnetizing current. The current-balancing loop keeps the average primary current and the average secondary current substantially zero, and adjusts the duty ratio of the switches in a corresponding bridge to eliminate the corresponding DC component.

Bidirectional converters and flux-balancing control methods thereof

A power supply is coupled to an input voltage source. The power supply includes a plurality of converters. Each converter has an input for receiving an input voltage and an output for providing an output voltage. The inputs are connected in series and the outputs are connected in parallel to provide an output voltage. The power supply further includes an output regulating controller coupled to one of the plurality of converters for regulating the output voltage. The power supply further includes one or more input regulating controllers correspondingly coupled to the remaining one or more converters of the plurality of converters for regulating one or more input voltages.

Power supply having converters with serially connected inputs and parallel connected outputs

A power supply having an input and an output, includes a power converter coupled between the input and output of the power supply including at least one switch that is controlled by comparing a sensed voltage, the sensed voltage corresponding to a current flowing through the switch, to a reference voltage. A controller, in response to a change detected in a switching frequency of the switch, reduces audible noise generated by the power supply by at least one of: adjusting the reference voltage; adjusting the current sense voltage; or adjusting a resistance used to generate the sensed voltage.

Switch-mode power supply having reduced audible noise

A low input-current harmonic three-phase boost rectifier includes an input stage for receiving a three-phase input voltage in relation to a neutral node and an output stage adapted to couple to at least one load. The rectifier further includes one or more switching converter stages, each having a plurality of switches coupled to the neutral node, the plurality of switches operating with a fixed duty cycle, the fixed duty cycle being a substantially 50% duty cycle. The rectifier further includes one or more controllers adapted to vary the switching frequency of the plurality of switches based on at least one of a condition of the at least one load or the input voltage and includes one or more decoupling stages, each including one or more inductive elements adapted to inductively decouple the output stage from at least one of the one or more switching converter stages.

Three-phase soft-switched PFC rectifiers

A load current balancing circuit that operates with a direct current (DC) power supply includes at least one transformer having a first inductive element adapted to couple in series with a first load and a second inductive element adapted to couple in series with a second load. The first load is parallel to the second load. The load balancing circuit further includes at least one switch adapted to operate at one or more switching frequencies associated with at least one driving signal. The switch is configured to periodically interrupt respective current flows through the first inductive element and second inductive element substantially simultaneously.

Load current balancing circuit

A power supply comprises an input voltage detector that detects a drop in input voltage that corresponds to an input voltage loss. A power converter is coupled to the input voltage detector. The power converter, which may be a boost converter or a power factor correction converter, has a switching device that is actuated in accordance with a duty cycle. A duty cycle adjuster is responsive to detection of the drop in the input voltage to adjust the duty cycle of the switching device in order to limit an input current surge through the switching device below a desired level after the input voltage returns.

System and method for limiting input-current surge in a switching mode power supply

A robust decoder generates an output state from input signals related to the line-voltage signals of a three-phase power system, using a segment identification method based on zero-crossings derived from line-voltage difference signals. The robust decoder includes a basic decoder that provides a current output state based on the input signals, a state table that provides a presumed previous state based on the current output state of the basic decoder, a binary feed back loop including a state element for storing a previous output state, and a selector for providing the output state based on the stored previous output state and the presumed previous state. The robust decoder may be implemented as hardware or software in a digital power converter. Such a digital power converter may include boost inductors each receiving an input line voltage signal from the three-phase power system to provide phase voltage signals, switches receiving the phase voltage signals to provide an intermediate voltage signal, the plurality of switches each being control by a driving signal, an output circuit coupled to the intermediate voltage signal to provide a rectified output voltage signal for digital power converter, and a digital control circuit receiving the input line voltages and the output voltage signal, the digital control circuit generating the driving signals to control the switches. The switches may be configured according to a state machine.

Control method and device for a system of interleaved converters using a designated master converter

A PFC circuit comprises a first converter and a second converter and a multi-port electromagnetic device. The first converter has a first inductive element and the second converter has a second inductive element. The multi-port electromagnetic device comprises a first magnetic core having a first closed flux path and a second magnetic core having a second closed flux path, with the first closed flux path being independent of the second closed flux path. The first inductive element of the first boost circuit comprises a first winding that electromagnetically couples the first magnetic core to the second magnetic core and the second inductive element of the second boost circuit comprises a second winding that electromagnetically couples the first magnetic core to the second magnetic core independent of the electromagnetic coupling of the first winding such that current application in one windings does not induce a substantial voltage in the other.

Power factor correction rectifier having independent inductive components

The present invention includes multiple power converters for driving one or more loads via an input power source, AC or DC. A first switching power converter has first one or more windings coupled to an input power source, and a second switching power converter having second one or more windings coupled to one or more loads. A magnetic device comprising a single integrated magnetic core couples the first one or more windings to the second one or more windings for reducing switching loss.

Power system having multiple power converters with reduced switching loss

A soft-switched boost converter includes an active snubber to provide soft switching of all semiconductor components. Specifically, the current ('turn-off current') in the rectifier is switched off at a controlled rate, the main switch is closed under zero-voltage switching (ZVS) condition, and the auxiliary switch in the active snubber is opened under zero-current switching (ZCS) condition. As a result, switching losses are reduced with beneficial effects on conversion efficiency and EMC performance.

Soft-switched power converters

A single-stage input-current-shaping (SICS) flyback converter achieves substantially reduced conduction losses in the primary side of the SICS flyback converter by connecting a bypass diode between the positive terminal of a full-bridge rectifier and the positive terminal of an energy-storage capacitor. An effective current interleaving between an energy-storage inductor and the bypass diode is thus obtained in the SICS flyback converter around the peak of the rectified line voltage, resulting in a significantly reduced input-current ripple and reduced current stress on the switch. Further, by rearranging the rectifiers in the ICS part of the SICS flyback converter in such a way that the energy-storage capacitor and the ICS inductor are connected to the ac line voltage through only two rectifiers, one diode forward-voltage drop is eliminated, which results in a substantially reduced conduction loss in the primary-side rectifiers.
