A method and a GGSN support node for sending data packets to a mobile station in a mobile communications system from an external communication system. The GGSN receives data packets from the external communication system in a first plurality of data flows which it maps to a second plurality of data flows in the mobile communications system. It establishes at least one filter for controlling the mapping and associates the filter with the mobile station. It also maps at least one of the data flows on the basis of the filter and configures the filter on the basis of information which preferably originates from the mobile station.

Transporting QoS mapping information in a packet radio network

In an aspect, an apparatus is provided including a mapping device configured to establish mapping information for delivery order attributes corresponding to different transmission protocol types, and a detection device configured to detect a transmission protocol type for the transmission of data packets. The apparatus further includes a decision device configured to decide whether the detected protocol type is a predetermined type, and a setting device configured to set, based on the mapping information and the decision result, a delivery order attribute as a parameter for transmission of data packets in a packet data network if the predetermined protocol type is not present.

Packet data transmission in third generation mobile system

The invention relates to a method and a communication system comprising at least one first network element connectable to a second network element. At least one of the first and second network elements use one of two or more selectable modes for communicating with another network element. One or both of the network elements, or a third network element, which is connectable with the first and second network elements, performs a mode selection procedure for selecting the same mode for bidirectional communication between the network elements. The modes preferably are different codec types, channel-coding schemes, or radio interface protocol types. The first and/or second network elements may be portable terminal equipments and the third network element preferably is a support node or a means providing a support function such as a CSCF. The mode selection ensures use of one and the same mode, such as a codec, in uplink and downlink directions enabling IP telephony in UMTS using SIP protocol.

Communication system and method providing a mode selection procedure

The invention relates to controlling selection of a gateway support node of a packet-switched network. The invention includes defining at least one condition for the gateway support node. When the condition is fulfilled, another gateway support node is more suitable for transmitting packets. When fulfillment of the condition is detected, a first message indicating the other gateway support node is transmitted to the serving support node.

A method for providing location service information related to a mobile station in a mobile communications system supporting connections of a first type, for example circuit-switched, and a second type, for example packet-switched. Location services in a packet radio network

A method and a communication system which includes a first network element, e.g. portable terminal, connectable to a second network element. One of selectable modes is used for communication. A network element is adapted to perform a mode selection procedure for selecting the same mode for bidirectional communication between the network elements. The mode selection ensures the use of one and the same mode in uplink and downlink direction and thus enables e.g. IP telephony in UMTS using SIP protocol. The invention provides for facilitating a VoIP communication session by way of a radio link with a mobile station. If the DOA parameter is set, a traffic class of transmitted data packets is determined and the transmitted data packets are processed dependent on the determined traffic class. In addition, a method is used to set the DOA as a parameter for transmission of data packets in a packet data network.

A method for transmitting data packets in multiple data flows to/from a mobile station in a mobile communications system. A data transmission path is formed for routing data packets. Multiple profiles are associated with the data transmission path, each profile comprising at least one quality of service parameter, or QoS parameter. Each flow or data packet is provided with a profile tag indicating one of the multiple profiles. Scheduling and policing the transmission of individual data packets is based on at least one QoS parameter of the profile indicated by the profile tag associated with the data flow in question.

Controlling quality of service in a mobile communications system

A communication connection to a second user equipment (UE B) by a first user equipment (UE A) is requested, the request including a specific information element for an identification of UE B, a determination is made (S) in a database on the basis of the specific information element identifying UE B's location within the communication network, a decision is made (S, S) whether UE B is reachable or accepts the communication connection or not, and if the decision is positive, the communication connection is established (S) between UE A and UE B adapted to perform a packet data communication.

Method and device for performing a packet data communication

A method and a wireless telecommunications system, a message service center and a mobile station implementing the method for transmitting messages between a mobile station and a second party. The method of the invention includes delivering messages irrespective of the presentation thereof: delivering messages through the same message service center irrespective of the content type and employing the same protocol between the terminal and the message service center for all messages. The content type indicates the presentation of the message contents which may include test, speech, images, video images or various combinations thereof.

Method for delivering messages in a wireless communications system using the same protocol for all types of messages

A method of transmitting data in a packet radio network to a mobile station performing a routing area update. The packet radio network transmits data to the mobile station via a first support node. The mobile station sends a routing area update message to a second support node, which sends to the first support node a request for context data of the mobile station from the first support node. The first support node sends from its memory, end user data addressed to the mobile station to the second support node. It then waits for a predetermined period of time before sending the end user data to the second support node. The predetermined time may be fixed, depending preferably on the quality of service of the connection used by the mobile station. Alternatively the predetermined period of time expires when the second support note sends to the first support node a separate acknowledgement message indicating that the second support node has received the context data of the mobile station.

A method is provided for transmitting multimedia-related information between a first device and a second device coupled to a packet-switched data transmission network, A first protocol stack ( ) is defined for the first device and a second protocol stack ( ) is defined for the second device. Method and arrangement for preparing for the transmission of multimedia-related information in a packet-switched cellular radio network

In a mobile communications system (BSS, SGSN, GGSN) having a packet data transmission capability, a dynamic packet-based quality of service (QoS) mechanism is provided within a &ldquo;transmission tunnel&rdquo; defined by a more static packet data protocol context (PDP context). More particularly, each data packet is arranged to carry at least one QoS parameter, and the scheduling and the policing of the transmission of the data packets is made in packet by packet basis according to this QoS information in the packets, while, however, within the limits set by the PDP context. This concept enables to have any number of QoS profiles in use simultaneously, e.g. a dedicated QoS profile for each of several Internet user applications run in the mobile station (MS) for a IP address. Therefore, the present invention provides support for various Internet applications and their QoS requirements. Moreover, the QoS can be changed at any time after activation of the PDP context, since only the QoS information in the relevant data packets has to be changed.
